April is known as the month of \u2018Bak\u2019 to express <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cfortunate\u201d from Sanskrit. Sinhala and Tamil New Year signifies the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">reaping of the harvest and social customs especially of the farming <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">community. Aluth Avurudda dawns <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">with the completion of a twelve-month <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">period when the Sun moves from <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Meena Rashiya to Mesha Rashiya. This <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">transitional period is called <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cSankranthi\u201d and is believed to be a <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">period with no auspicious time. Thus,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">people engage in religious activities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-61250 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/aluth-awrudu.jpg\" alt=\"aluth awrudu\" width=\"247\" height=\"256\" \/>Avurudu season becomes more important with the traditional rituals connected with the celebration which lasts <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">for weeks. Aluth Avurudda was celebrated in the Kandyan Kingdom as a national festival performing the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">rituals on the auspicious times called \u201cNeketh\u201d proposed by the astrologers bringing prosperity and happiness to the country. Rituals of <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">the new year commence with bathing on the last day of the old year <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">and viewing the moon the same night. Lighting the hearth, entering <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">into the first business transaction, having the first morsels of the new <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">year and anointing of oils and \u201cnanu\u201d (a herbal mixture) are some of <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">the rituals taken place in auspicious times during the new year time. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">The approach of each auspicious time for various rituals is marked by <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">firecrackers which is a sign for happiness and joy. A variety of Avurudu specific games take place around this festival season making people share and care for each other. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">New year is mostly about unity, forgiveness and togetherness. The <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">rituals are arranged in a way to encourage people to share with their <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">loved ones and conduct the rituals together. The idea of the whole <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">new year festival is aligned with \u201cbeing new&#8221; in life for Sri Lankans.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Buying new clothes, giving a new look to houses and preparing traditional sweats are very common as a preparation for the festival. Koha, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">the Asian Koel, a type of a cuckoo bird has a strong connection with <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Avurudu celebrations according to the traditional literature.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Sinhala and Tamil New Year is about caring and being joyful at the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">beginning of their new year making a fresh start.
