They went to Ratnapura hearing of the rich gem pits <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">in the area. Sri Lanka was well <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">known in the world for its Gems <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">even more than today. Realising the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">value of capturing Ratnapura for economic gains, they were successful <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">in building their fortress in a land in the vicinity of Ratnapura. The <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">people of the area lived in fear of an attack from the fortress would<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">happen anytime. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Contanthinu da Sa, a dreadful war veteran of the Portuguese was<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">heading the regiment in the fort. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">However, before long the Sinhala silently intruded into the area and <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">surrounded the Portuguese fort and set everything for an attack. The <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">attack by the Sinhala army was so powerful that, the Portuguese could <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">not face it.
