It has become a very popular street food in Sri Lanka, in big towns and rural areas. It is now considered as a special \u2018super staple food\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wCmOKth4YEE\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">When Australia opened doors for Southern Asians in the late fifties and early sixties, it was <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">a great opportunity for most Sri Lankans to migrate to Australia, those who disliked <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">SWRD\u2019s \u201cSinhala only within 24 hour policy\u201d This gave a great impetus specially for <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">the burgher community then, contributing to the good of the country, excelling on <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">sports, athletics, trade, law enforcement, and so on, to leave her shores for greener <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">pastures in Australia, and the loss this enterprising community is felt, even today in <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">that developing country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Melbourne was the place preferred by many Migrants at the time, whilst a few <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">professionals and others settled down in Sydney. Today, if you walk along the streets <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">of Springvale in the city of Dandenong, Glen Waverley, Noble Park, Broadmeadows, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">no matter which way you turn, you are bound to \u201cbump-into\u201d a Sri Lankan with a <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">warm smile and a greeting of, \u201cHello Machang, how are you?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">The Sri Lankan food industry in Melbourne is flourishing like no other; both Sydney <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">and Brisbane run a poor second. In Sydney, to enjoy treats like hoppers you need to <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">travel many miles, there is one place called the \u2018Blue <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Elephant\u201d in Pennant Hills, where you need to give <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">them prior notice. There are a few food caterers for <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">home parties making hoppers on a circular device <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">where at least ten hoppers could be cooked in one go. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">There is one lady by the name of \u201cKumarika\u201d fairly <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">famous, catering hoppers cooked on the spot for home <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">parties, in Sydney.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Ask Dallas Achilles a talented musician, settled down in <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Melbourne for many decades, about Sri Lankan <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Courtesy: Walawwa <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">restaurants. He would say, \u201cThose living in close proximity to Clayton are blessed <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">with an abundance of restaurants specialising in Sri Lankan Cuisine.\u201d His favourite <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">spots are Walawwa Restaurant, Caf\u00e9 Ceylon, Kites, Merqury Inn, Fab and Cake Point, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">La Festiva under new management serving a variety of Sri Lankan and International <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Cuisine, Merqury Inn may have got their spelling wrong: It should read \u201cMercury\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Sri Lankans love Pizzas just like the way they love hoppers. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Visit La Festiva in Springvale, they serve the best special Sri <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Lankan flavoured Gourmet Pizza, and for their dishes like <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Ambul Thiyal, Chicken devilled, Curry chicken and potatoes <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">and Lamb Korma.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Then there is the \u201cCorlam Kitchen in Glen Waverley for <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">lunch. They serve a special Awadhi Dum biriyani, also <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">called \u201cPukka\u201d. Breathe in the aroma of this princely <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">mutton biryani, cooked the royal Awadhi style, a perfect <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">delicious meal for your lunch or dinner feast with your <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">family and friends.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">This \u201cspot\u201d is available for birthday parties, celebrations, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Graduations, weddings and Anniversaries, etc. The Chef\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">special at Corlam kitchen is \u201cChilli Crabs\u201d only a few other restaurants, if any, serve this <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">spicy dish<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Dallas would recommend \u2018The Fab Curry &amp; Pizza in Centre Road in Bentleigh for hoppers <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">and pizzas. This is a rather little \u201cshop\u201d at the far end of Bentleigh\u2019s Centre Road, and <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">primarily a \u201ctake away\u201d Business. It is fairly rare to see a combination- Sri Lankan <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Shop\/Restaurant which serves both \u201cHoppers\u201d and also a \u201cCombination Curry Pizza\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">When you visit this little place, you are always welcomed by a friendly Sri Lankan lady <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">while being overpowered, at the same time with the enticing aroma of exotic spices. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Dallas says that they serve 5 hoppers, an egg hopper and a bowl of chicken, beef or fish <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">curry with sambol for $9. There are very good reviews on this Fab Curry &amp; Pizza joint, and a <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">worthwhile spot for a delightful tasty cuisine experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Caf\u00e9 Ceylon in Centre Road, Clarinda is another <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">eatery. On their \u201cMenu\u201d they feature Roti,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Parata, Pittu with curry, wafer and Masala <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Thosai with fish, beef, chicken and vegetable <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">curries. Vegans would love to patronise this joint. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">The nearby restaurants are- Champion in Clayton, Clayton Fish, Merqury Inn, Clayton and <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Kites in Clayton.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201c<strong>Walawwa<\/strong>\u201d- \u2018The Bungalow\u2019 at Sandown <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Regency, Noble Park <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">This is a favourite \u201cEatery\u201d, says Dallas. The best <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">street foods of Sri Lanka are served here, at best <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">prices in Melbourne for $ 25, and you could enjoy <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">all you can eat. They have a dinner buffet with live <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">music and entertainment. They have \u201cSet Meals\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">too, beginning with \u201cStarters\u201d and snacks, soups, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Main dishes like savoury rice, curry pasta with <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">small pieces of roti stir fried with spicy vegetables<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">and cheese, Chicken seafood and deserts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">They recently organised a Baila Masala Boogie Night with live music on one Saturday<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">There are many other restaurants owned and run by Sri Lankans in Melbourne. Ask Dallashe will direct you.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Dallas mentions a good Hopper Eatery next door to \u201cCurry &amp; Chips\u201d It is called \u201cYamu\u201d <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 20px;\">owned by Upali.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 20px;\">There are many other \u201cEateries\u201d by Sri Lankan chefs other areas of Melbourne and outskirts, <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 20px;\">not visited to write about.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 20px;\">Sydney as was mentioned earlier, boasts just a few Sri Lankan eateries and not within close<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 20px;\">proximity of each other, although they DO have more Chinese Restaurants than Melbourne.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 20px;\">Is it any wonder then, that Melbourne has been \u201cnicknamed\u201d Little Ceylon\u201d?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 28px; color: #000000;\"><strong>What about Sydney Sri Lankan restaurants?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 20px;\">Sydney is also flourishing with Sri Lankan spicy food restaurants, focused to certain suburbs, <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 20px;\">such as Toongabbie, Seven Hills, Blacktown, Parramatta, where most of the recent Sri<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 20px;\">Lankan migrants live.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 20px;\">Sri Lankans from all over Sydney make that long drive to these treat outlets, during <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 20px;\">weekends for a hearty spicy meal, to bring back memories of the foods cooked by their <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 20px;\">mothers and archies, at home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Why Melbourne is called, \u201cLittle Ceylon\u201d By Dr harold Gunatillake-FRCS,FICS,FIACS,AM(Sing),MB,BS (Cey) \u2013Health editor &nbsp; \u201cHoppers described as the love-child of a crepe &amp; crumpet.
