A Chinese Tale: From Surviving the Titanic to Racial Hate in USA<\/span><\/h1>\n

The story of how the survivors received a racist response in the U.S. is prompting viewers to reflect on China\u2019s rise. During the editing of \u201cTitanic,\u201d the 1997 blockbuster about the ship\u2019s fated maiden voyage in April 1912,\u00a0a scene of a Chinese man laying on a door, floating in the ocean and awaiting rescue, was left on the cutting room floor.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

But a new documentary, \u201cThe Six,\u201d is finally telling the story of R.M.S. Titanic\u2019s half-dozen Chinese survivors. Directed by Arthur Jones, a British man who currently resides in Shanghai, in collaboration with executive producer James Cameron, the director of \u201cTitanic,\u201d it premiered Friday in China, close to the 109th anniversary of the tragedy.<\/span><\/p>\n

Their history had long remained hidden.\u00a0Because of racist American immigration policies and the Chinese tendency toward self-effacement, the six men had never told their stories,<\/strong>\u00a0Jones told Sixth Tone in an\u00a0earlier interview<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

With accounts of the survivors\u2019 family members and animated reconstructions, the documentary traces the fates of the six out of eight Chinese passengers on the Titanic who survived the ship\u2019s sinking.<\/span><\/p>\n

Documentaries are a niche market in China and usually aren\u2019t allotted many screenings. As of Saturday, \u201cThe Six\u201d had taken in a relatively modest\u00a01.59 million yuan<\/a>\u00a0($244,000).<\/span><\/p>\n

But the tale of Chinese men hoping to move to the U.S. against all odds \u2014 at a time when the Chinese Exclusion Act forbade all immigration into the country from China \u2014 has attracted outsize interest for a documentary. \u201cThe Six\u201d has a solid 8.4 out of 10 rating on culture site Douban.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chen Zhengfan, an employee at a state-owned enterprise, told Sixth Tone he went to see the film because he was curious how \u201cthe buried history is now revealed,\u201d and how a British director would tell a Chinese story.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Audiences would easily relate to the fact that, with China\u2019s rise, we do not need to slip across the border or work as coolies anymore.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

The six survivors reached New York on April 18, 1912, aboard R.M.S. Carpathia, which carried some 700 Titanic survivors. According to Cheng Wei, a professor at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences who has\u00a0researched the history<\/a>\u00a0of the Titanic\u2019s Chinese passengers, rumors spread in New York that the Chinese men had pretended to be women to get onto lifeboats. Amid widespread racism against Chinese people at the time, these stories \u2014 which Cheng said were not based on fact \u2014 were soon circulated nationwide through media reports and telegrams.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The United States government later deported the men under the Chinese Exclusion Act, which was\u00a0repealed<\/a>\u00a0in 1943.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wang Xin, a postdoctoral film researcher at Beijing Normal University, told Sixth Tone that many Chinese viewers of \u201cThe Six\u201d have framed the film around a nationalist narrative. \u201cAudiences would easily relate to the fact that, with China\u2019s rise, we do not need to slip across the border or work as coolies anymore,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

After a screening on Friday, a student surnamed Li contrasted the stories of the survivors \u2014 fleeing from the \u201cbackward\u201d China of yesteryear \u2014 with the country\u2019s present-day confidence.<\/strong>\u00a0He told Sixth Tone he was moved by the survivors\u2019 histories. \u201cAs a citizen from a poor country, you may face problems like discrimination after going to a rich country,\u201d he said. \u201cTherefore, national prosperity is important.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
