My work on\u00a0<em>People Inbetween<\/em>\u00a0(1989) has underlined\u00a0<strong>the degree to which the Colombo metropolitan arena was a hegemonic centre which drew migrants from most parts of the island as well as trading communities from parts of India.<\/strong>\u00a0The first four maps in that book<\/span><a name=\"_ednref1\"><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/thuppahis.com\/2021\/05\/10\/socio-political-insights-from-views-of-the-aussie-ceylon-match-in-1938\/#_edn1\"><strong>[i]\u00a0<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0\u2026. drawn largely with the help of my old mates in the Geography Departments of Ceylon University, viz. Kusuma Gunawardena and Percy Silva \u2026. provide keen readers with a set of \u2018snapshot readings\u2019 of this weightage \u2013 even though\u00a0 they depict a scenario in the year 1971 \u2013 because the trends had been in place since the 19<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century (see\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/thuppahis.com\/2021\/05\/10\/the-hegemony-of-colombo-from-way-back\/)\">https:\/\/thuppahis.com\/2021\/05\/10\/the-hegemony-of-colombo-from-way-back\/)<\/a>..<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">While tennis-ball or\u00a0<em>kaduru<\/em>-ball cricket may have been pursued by lads in rural and coastal spaces, the competitive cricketing arenas were mostly restricted to urban centres along the western littoral, the Jaffna Peninsula, Kandy, Kurunegala, Matale \u00a0and the plantation town\u2026. and Batticaloa and Trincomalee.\u00a0<strong>In cricket too, Colombo loomed as giant centre over the rest<\/strong>. This primacy was underlined in the 1920s-to-1940s by the degree to which foreign touring sides played most of their matches in Colombo. The most prominent of these \u2013 promoting island-wide interest in middle class circles \u2013 were the whistle-stop matches played by MCC or Australian sides on their way by passenger boat to compete for the Ashes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">The lead-picture in the Thuppahi Item on Lindsay Hassett underlines the eagerness of the crowd. But it reveals more.\u00a0<strong>Note the style of dress<\/strong>: white or, rather, WHITE embracing all parts of the body \u2026 no colours, whether dark or bright.\u00a0<strong>Uniformity. Temperateness. Constraint.<\/strong>\u00a0And the topees were worn by young and old.\u00a0<strong>The pith hat was respectable \u201cmiddle-class\u201d attire<\/strong>.\u00a0These hats could be coloured khaki or white. They came, I believe, in two shapes \u2013 one more rounded than the other.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-64889 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Lindsay-Hassett-3-547x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"547\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">The term \u201cmiddle class\u201d in that temporal context denotes the dominant Ceylonese class within a colonial environment where the British sahibs still called the shots though under duress from the prominent Ceylonese class forces that were pressing forward for increased power through the State Council set up in 1931 by the Donoughmore Reforms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">The Australia- Ceylon match on 30<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0March 1938 was played at what were the grounds of the Municipal Council of Colombo at Alexandra Crescent hired out to the SSC (these later became the home grounds of the Nomads CC). It is evident that temporary sheds had been built for the public at some spots on the ground. But let me insert another revealing photograph from the surrounding scenario of the match.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-64890 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Lindsay-Hassett-4-509x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"509\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Here, we see another angle on the eager crowd. The respectable attire \u2018shines\u2019 bright. But so too does\u00a0<strong>the mix of middle-class and working class.<\/strong>\u00a0There are blokes in sarong and shirt; and some wear their sarong in Muslim colour\/style; while a few use white handkerchiefs for their head-protection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">So, what we see here, luckily, is a shot of that part of the ground \u2018housing\u2019 the gallery rather than the privileged who could pay more. But, here too, there were middle-class personnel \u2026. and intrepid souls from every class who could climb trees when the incentives were great. Watching Australian cricketers in the Bradman era was stupendous incentive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><strong>POSTSCRIPT<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">The Australians batted first and scored 367 runs for the loss of nine wkts in 69 overs \u2013 with CL Badcock and Lindsay Hassett each scoring 116 runs and G. Pereira taking 5 wkts for 106 runs in 18 overs.
