It is also one of the most common and most popular forms of women\u2019s attire in the South Asian region, with different styles in various regions of the Indian subcontinent. While styles of saree draping introduced from India are quite popular in Sri Lanka, the\u00a0<i>osariya\u00a0<\/i>\u2013 also known as the Kandyan saree \u2013 is our own unique style of saree draping, and it is often considered to be the national dress of the Sinhalese women of Sri Lanka. While it is different from the\u00a0<i>nivi\u00a0<\/i>style that is popular in India, the origins of the<i>\u00a0osariya\u00a0<\/i>comes from trends in South India, and may have been introduced to Kandyan culture through the influence of the Nayakkar kings who ruled the Kandyan Kingdom before the advent of British rule.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-65352 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Osariya-1-582x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"582\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The wife of a Kandyan chief wearing an Osariya. Image courtesy indianamulets.com.au<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">What makes the\u00a0<i>osariya<\/i>\u00a0distinct from other styles of saree draping found in the Indian subcontinent is the addition of an elaborate frill, or\u00a0<i>odokkuwa<\/i>, at the side of the waist. Aside from that, the frilled borders of the fall of the shoulder, called the<i>\u00a0osari pota,<\/i>\u00a0are an integral part of the outfit. It is adorned with floral designs, religious motifs, and geometric patterns, because it is pleated and is therefore more conspicuous than the portion of the\u00a0<i>osariya<\/i>\u00a0that is wrapped around the waist. Today, the complete length of the material used to drape the\u00a0<i>osariya\u00a0<\/i>varies between five and six yards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-65354 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Osariya-2-263x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"263\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The osari pota is embellished to give a more elegant look to the outfit. Image courtesy pinterest.com\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">According to the book\u00a0<i>Costumes of Sri Lanka<\/i>\u00a0by K. D. G. Wimalaratne and Dian Gomes, the Indian saree was introduced in the early 20th century to Sri Lanka by the women of Moratuwa, and this style became infamously known as the \u2018Moratuwa saree\u2019. The Indian saree, as well as the\u00a0<i>osariya<\/i>\u00a0that had become a part of the Kandyan culture by then, became more popular because of\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/eyeofthecylone.wordpress.com\/tag\/kandyan-sari\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the nationalist campaigns of Anagarika Dharmapala<\/a>, who was\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lankaweb.com\/news\/items\/2014\/08\/26\/anagarika-dharmapala-greatest-sri-lankan-of-the-1920-centuries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">against<\/a>\u00a0Sinhalese women wearing Western clothing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">The\u00a0<i>osariya\u00a0<\/i>is said to be a blend of two different styles of saree draping:\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.serendib.btoptions.lk\/article.php?issue=8&amp;id=154\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the\u00a0<i>ohoriya<\/i>\u00a0and the<i>\u00a0selai\u00a0<\/i>styles<\/a>, both which are of Tamil origin. Murals in the\u00a0<i>Hindagala<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>Malaagammana<\/i>\u00a0temples depict the oldest form of the\u00a0<i>ohoriya<\/i>. These murals display that the\u00a0<i>ohori pota<\/i>, the long fold which flows over one shoulder, had first been used to cover the upper body. Later on, the\u00a0<i>ohoriya<\/i>\u00a0was completed with a tight-fitting jacket,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.seu.ac.lk\/researchandpublications\/symposium\/3rd\/Engineering\/Historical%20View%20of%20Foreign.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">an influence of the West.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">The\u00a0<i>selai,<\/i>\u00a0which is the Tamil word for saree, refers to the style of saree which is popular among the Tamil women of Jaffna. It consists of the fall, or\u00a0<i>pallu<\/i>, being wound around the waist and tucked into a fan-shaped frill at the back. Historically, the drape of the\u00a0<i>selai\u00a0<\/i>also\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.serendib.btoptions.lk\/article.php?issue=8&amp;id=154\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">reflected a woman\u2019s social status<\/a>. Women of lower social status wore the cloth wound around their lower body and then thrown over their upper body in a drape instead of a jacket \u2013 this was commonly known as the\u00a0<i>selai<\/i>. On the other hand, women of higher social status wore a\u00a0<i>ravike,\u00a0<\/i>a tight-fitting short-sleeved bodice made of velvet or some other thick fabric with the\u00a0<i>selai<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-65355 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Osariya-3-267x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>In old Tamil communities, the drape of the\u00a0<em>selai<\/em>\u00a0reflected a woman\u2019s social status. Image courtesy pinterest.com<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">In the same manner, the traditional<i>\u00a0osariya\u00a0<\/i>was worn mostly by women of high society in the Kandyan Kingdom, and it consisted of a jacket that completely covered the chest, midriff, and back, and a cloth ten\u00a0<i>riyans<\/i>\u00a0long\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sundaytimes.lk\/020602\/plus\/4.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">(about 15 feet)<\/a>\u00a0was what was draped over the lower half of the body and thrown over the shoulder. The jacket had a round neckline and puffed sleeves, worn either long or short. The end of the\u00a0<i>pota<\/i>, or fall of the saree,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.serendib.btoptions.lk\/article.php?issue=8&amp;id=154\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">was influenced by the older\u00a0<i>uthurusaluwa<\/i><\/a>, which was thrown over the shoulder by women before going out and about.This was customarily paired with\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.seu.ac.lk\/researchandpublications\/symposium\/3rd\/Engineering\/Historical%20View%20of%20Foreign.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">traditional Kandyan jewellery<\/a>, including Agasti jewellery, which was handmade for the Kandyan royal families and the aristocrats, and regarded as symbols of prosperity, wealth, and nobility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-65356 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Osariya-4-403x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"403\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A Kandyan bride wearing the\u00a0<em>osariya<\/em>\u00a0and the traditional bridal jewellery. Image courtesy pinterest.com<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">The\u00a0<i>osariya<\/i>\u00a0is still a favourite item of clothing among many women, who opt for this style of saree to wear to work or as wedding attire, and the absence of pleats in the draping of the\u00a0<i>osariya<\/i>\u00a0also tends to make it more figure-flattering. Modern trends include the \u2018made-up Kandyan saree\u2019, or the ready-made\u00a0<i>osariya<\/i>, in which the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/trekkingincouture.wordpress.com\/2017\/03\/26\/sri-lankan-brides-kandyan-bride\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><i>osariya<\/i>\u00a0is deconstructed and separated<\/a>\u00a0into four smaller pieces; namely the jacket, the shoulder drape (<i>pota<\/i>), the\u00a0<i>neriya \u2012\u00a0<\/i>a piece which is tied around the waist\u00a0<i>\u2012<\/i>\u00a0and the wraparound skirt. The saree worn at the wedding is often made of fine materials like silk and is richly decorated with embroidery.
