CHAPTER ONE (17)<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

 <\/p>\n

James woke up,<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>had a shower and went down to have breakfast.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Arthur Stuart was there. He had ordered his breakfast. James ordered a full English breakfast.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c You have a nice bunch of planters down here. It\u2019s good to meet them.\u201d said<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Arthur.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Yes. It\u2019s good to come over and spend time, even if it\u2019s only one night.\u201d said James.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c What\u2019s the plan for today?\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c We will go to Loolecondere but we will stop at The Peradeniya Gardens and meet my friend Robert Jones. He is in fact the man who grew the tea bushes which are now established in Loolecondere.\u201d said James.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c I look forward to that. Without Robert helping to nursery tea plants we would not here. I heard that coffee has collapsed completely. And most of the planters have returned to England.\u201d said Arthur.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Yes. That was coming but we were all hoping against hope.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c I agree. So do we leave now.?\u201d asked Arthur.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYes. Lets leave now. Hope you had a restful night.\u201d said James.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Yes. i had a peaceful night. I had a perky little damsel coming and knocking at my door. She asked for you. I told her you were in another room but she was welcome to my room. She came in and locked the door. We had a very good time. She didn’t stay for long. i gave her some money.\u201d said Arthur.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c She was a local was she?\u201d asked James<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Yes . She was. Very pretty with a sweet smile and lovely perfect teeth.\u201d said Arthur.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m glad you have enjoyed another wonderful thing from this country.\u201d said James.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Yes. I don\u2019t blame you. The planters said that you were staying with a local girl. I personally have no prejudice on these matters. But I guess the cost of travel to England and maintenance for a family is very high.\u201d said Arthur.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c I must admit that I have enjoyed the company of my dear woman Thangam for several years. I may add that she has kept me sane. She has given her life to look after me.\u201d said James.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c I can understand your feelings. It\u2019s natural to want company when you are alone. Anyone would feel lonely.\u201d said Arthur.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>They left Queens Hotel and the carriage reached the Peradeniya Gardens. They spent about an hour talking to Robert and walking around the a part of the gardens.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>They left Peradeniya and reached Loolecondere soon after lunchtime.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>James had planned a surprise for Thangam. He wanted to get a cup of tea for Arthur Stuart and go and look for Thangam. He wanted to give her a big hug and carry her to the room. He had missed her so much. It did not occur to James that he was not acting a sane man would. He had been sleeping with Daisy the previous night and been enjoying a night of sensuous delight. And now he was excited about seeing Thangam, wanting to kiss her and carry her to the bedroom.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>He could not find Sinniah. He could not find Thangam.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>But Thangam\u2019s relative, the young girl who helped in the kitchen was there. She knew some English.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Where is Thangam\u201d he asked her.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c She is not here Sir.\u201d replied the girl.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Where is she ?\u201d he asked.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c She has gone home Sir\u201d she replied.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c She knew i was coming. I sent word to Sinniah.\u201d said James.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c She went long ago Sir. She went the day after you left.\u201d she said.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Alright. Where is Sinniah?\u201d he asked.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe said he was going to the water mill Sir because it was not working.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Alright. I\u2019ll go to the watermill.\u201d said James.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>James felt agitated. Even though the water mill was important, Sinniah should have waited until he came. He did not like it. It was afternoon. There was plenty of time for taking Arthur Stuart to the watermill.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>James told Arthur that they can take a walk to the watermill.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c it\u2019s very pleasant here James. i like the greenery here. The red flowers are pretty.\u201d said Arthur Stuart.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c I like the white flowers of of the jasmine plants. The estate workers plant them and use them for their morning and evening prayers. The women place them on their hair\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>replied James. His thought of Thangam with her hair full of jasmine.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>They arrived at the watermill. Sinniah was supervising a carpenter who was working on the water mill.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Hearing footsteps, Sinniah turned around and said:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Welcome back Sir.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Thank you Sinniah. This is Mr. Stuart. He is visiting our plantation.\u201d said James.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWelcome Mr. Stuart. We were expecting you and Mr.Taylor\u201d said Sinniah, smiling a rare smile.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c I did not see Thangam.\u201d said James.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Thangam went to the village with her mother. Samuel is here. He wanted to go with one of the girls. The girl was going to gather some mangoes.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>So i let him go. It\u2019s mango season.\u201d said Sinniah.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c When is Thangam coming back.?\u201d asked James.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c i\u2019m not sure Sir.\u201d said Sinniah and<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>added \u201c i\u2019 ll send word and find out.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Alright. Looks like the repair on the wheel is complete.\u201d said James.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Yes Sir. It\u2019s been completed.\u201d said Sinniah.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>*<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>The next day began with James getting out of bed, having his wash<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>and dressing quickly to take his walk around the house and nearby gardens, before breakfast. As he walked close to the garden, he saw Sinniah walking towards the house.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Morning Sinniah.\u201d said James.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Morning Mr. Taylor\u201d said Sinniah.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Did you find out about Thangam?\u201d he asked.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Yes. Thangam has decided to stay back in the village Sir.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c But how can she stay back? Samuel is here and i\u2019m back.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>said James.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Her uncles have forced her to stay back.\u201d said Sinniah.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c How can they do that. Nobody can force her stay back. it\u2019s against the law.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c It\u2019s just that they want her get married Sir. Her mother\u2019s brothers feel that she is bringing shame on the family by staying in Loolecondere Sir.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c I see. They think she is not married but having a bastard child. Is that it?\u201d asked James.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Yes. Exactly. These people think differently.\u201d added Sinniah.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c is she not coming back?\u201d asked James, his voice changing to a low tone, almost a whisper and his countenance showing distress.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Yes, sir. Sorry.\u201d said Sinniah.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>James\u2019s body moved sideways as if he was about to fall.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

There was a lull in the conversation as James turned around to walk away.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Then he turned around again and faced Sinniah and asked:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c What about Samuel. How is he going to cope without his mother?\u201d he asked.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Yes Sir. i told them they must think of the little boy. But they said it\u2019s up to you. They are willing to take him to the village and look after him.\u201d said Sinniah.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>James\u2019s eyes blazed as he stared hard at Sinniah. His anger was rising. He waved his hand showing negative feelings.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c No question about it. Samuel is my son. He will stay with me, even if i have to bring someone to look after him when i\u2019m out at work.\u201d said James.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Yes Sir\u201d said Sinniah respectfully nodding his head in agreement.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c After all you are his grandfather. We can look after him.\u201d said James.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Yes . We can look after him.\u201d said Sinniah.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>James turned and walked back to the house and into his room. He locked his door. He fell on the bed and sobbed. He could not contain himself. He pounded the bed with his hands.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c No. No. No. I cant bear this.\u201d he cried in a low voice so that nobody heard him. He sobbed quietly. He banged his head against the bed. After awhile he felt calm. He felt desolate. He felt as if<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>he was living in a cave all by himself. He thought of Samuel. He forgot that he had Samuel. With Samuel there, he had somebody who would make him happy. He looked in the mirror. He was looking very grim.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>He got up, checked his clothes and<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>walked out. He saw Samuel with Punya, the young girl. He called out to Samuel. Samuel<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>called out \u201cDaddy\u201d and they hugged each other. Samuel held James\u2019s face with both hands and beamed a smile of happiness.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>\u201c Mummy has gone.\u201d Samuel said his face changing, and the smile fading.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Yes. we will ask her come back.\u201d said James. Samuel and James played hide and seek which was Samuel\u2019s favourite game.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>After a while, Sinniah came out and asked them to come for breakfast.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c We will look after Samuel while you have breakfast with Mr. Stuart.\u201d said Sinniah.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Sinniah distracted Samuel by throwing a ball towards the flowers.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>The breakfast was served. There was bread, butter, eggs, even roti and sambal. Arthur Stuart walked in.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c I was admiring your garden. Heaps of beautiful flowers. And they smell heavenly\u201d said Arthur Stuart.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c We tend to get cuttings from various people and plant them here. Breakfast is ready.\u201d said James.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>They had breakfast. Arthur Stuart tried the roti and sambal.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c The sambal is pretty hot. But the roti is delicious.\u201d he said.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c The roti has coconut mixed with the flour.\u201d said James.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c The bread is tasty too. I enjoy the bread . It\u2019s very soft. It must be the type of yeast.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>What\u2019s your plan for today.\u201d said Arthur Stuart.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c We can go and see the mill and the tea rolling machine.\u201d said James.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Thank you. I was going to make a request to see the mill and the tea rolling machine.\u201d said<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Arthur Stuart.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>They walked to the mill. Sinniah was there supervising the tea rolling.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>They walked around the mill and the tea rolling machine.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c This tea roller is working very well I can see. it\u2019s almost as good as rolling by hand.\u201d said Arthur Stuart.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>\u201c Yes. With this fully equipped tea factory, I\u2019m able to keep the costs low, thanks to this machine and the water mill.\u201d said James.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Arthur Stuart and James completed their tour of the estate and returned to the house for lunch.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>The lunch consisted of fried chicken, cabbage, potato and some local vegetables and a fruit salad.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>James introduced Samuel to Mr. Stuart. Mr, Stuart shook hands with Samuel<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>and asked him about his favourite play activities. After a while, Sinniah carried Samuel away saying that he must have his afternoon nap.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>\u201c Do you feel like a nap yourself.\u201d asked Mr. Arthur Stuart, realising that lifestyles in Ceylon meant that an afternoon siesta was something quite normal.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>James was not used to having a nap in the afternoons, but he was feeling somewhat unwell, his stomach was churning a little.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Normally I don\u2019t have a nap. But I do feel I could do with a nap. What about you?\u201d asked James.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c I think I could do with a quick shut eye, especially after that splendid lunch.\u201d said Arthur Stuart.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c That\u2019s fine. We can meet in about one hour. And then decide what we should do next.\u201d said James.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>They met after the nap and decided to take a walk towards the hills to observe the country side and to mark out an area for extending the tea plantation. The skies were turning golden as the Sun started going down.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c | think I mentioned that the company has decided to abandon coffee altogether.\u201d said Arthur Stuart.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Yes you did.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Well most of the planters have been sent back. I think you know that.\u201d said Arthur.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Yes. i know that most of the planters have gone back.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Tea is also a better choice because tea leaves grow back every six weeks . I\u2019m told you have made your first shipment of tea to London.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Thats\u2019s correct. I\u2019ve had a good response from London.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOf course, growing more tea in Ceylon and india is threatening China\u2019s monopoly on tea growing and tea exports .\u201d said George Stuart.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c I can see that. China would be affected if tea grows well in Ceylon and India.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c There is a gentleman by the name of Thomas Lipton who is making a lot of changes to the way we sell tea to British tea drinkers. He is selling tea in his shops. The shops sell food like bread and vegetables. In fact selling tea in small packets of half a pound and one pound has shocked everyone, especially aristocracy. Many working class people have started buying tea.\u201d said Arthur Stuart.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c That is news to me. Tea has always been the preserve of the upper classes. \u201c said James.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Yes. Beer has been the drink for the working class. But Lipton has set out to change all that.\u201d said Arthur Stuart.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c The cost of tea would be too high for working class people.\u201d said James.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Yes. But with the use of rolling machines and drying machines, the costs are coming down. Lipton id also cutting out the middle man and buying direct from the tea estates in India. You have made a big contribution to this reduced cost. At the same time the quality is good.\u201d said Arthur Stuart.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c I\u2019m happy that things have turned out to be good for us all.\u201d said James.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c And Lipton has made a big change by making tea available in all his stores, along with flour, bread,sugar such basic food items. In fact he has let me know that he will be making a visit to Ceylon with the intention of meeting up with you.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c I\u2019m honoured. It\u2019s very nice of Mr. Lipton to want to meet with me.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Looks like your boss has caught some kind of stomach ailment. Hope he gets better soon.\u201d said Arthur Stuart.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c It\u2019s quite common to have these problems when travelling out. A lot of people coming to work in the plantations fall ill. Some even pass away from the illness Mr. Stuart.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The letter did not disclose what her aliment was. James felt embarrassed about visiting Daisy in hospital. He persuaded Robert to come with him and they visited Daisy. She looked very pale and her body seemed to have suffered much loss of weight. The visit to the hospital was timed in such a way that Crosfield was not there when Robert and James paid their visit.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

James played with Samuel throwing the little boy up in the air and catching him. Samuel was the only person he could feel happy with. It was magical that a little boy could make him extremely happy. He read a story to Samuel while he was in bed. Samuel went to sleep. James felt that Samuel was his anchor, a little boy who provided him with a feeling of happiness and reminded him of his first love, Thangam. He wished Thangam was stronger in her affairs with the family. If she was, she would still be here and their life would have been peaceful.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

He remembered reading somewhere that all that one needed was someone to hold one\u2019s hand. He needed someone to be close to him. He even started looking at<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>the women who were plucking tea. He thought about approaching one of the tea pluckers. He knew it was absurd to try to approach a tea plucker. The news of his doings would be everywhere. He knew such things did happen in the tea estates. He wanted to be known as a fair minded person. She was a small girl, maybe fourteen or thirteen. He censured himself for allowing such thoughts to drift through his mind.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Another week passed by. James was at the water mill where the tea roller was working when one of the young workers came running and told him that he had visitors in the house. James was excited. It could be Thangam. When James asked the young man who it was , boy could not answer in English. When asked if it Thangam, he replied in the negative, shaking his head. He mentioned that the visitor was a \u201cdorai\u201d , a white man.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>James arrived in the house and was pleasantly surprised to see Robert. Robert had arrived with two ladies. The carriage was drawn by one horse.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Hello Robert. Very nice of you to come. I\u2019ve been thinking of making a trip to Kandy.\u201d said James.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Please meet Nanditha and Savithri. I think you will remember Savithri. \u201c said Robert.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>The two ladies were feeling a little shy and could only smile bashfully.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Ah. Yes. I do remember Savithri . We met her on the road in Kandy.\u201d said James.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Yes. Thats right. You met Nanditha quite a long while ago.\u201d said George.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Yes. I remember. Very nice of all of you to come over. Thank you. You will stay for a little lunch. Let me talk to Punya. Punya is our home help. She cooks some dishes too. Sinniah helps her.\u201d said James.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Well you needed some help in the house. Savithri is looking for a job. i decided to come here with her. She can see how things are. If she likes it here, she can help during the week and get home for weekends. She is very interested in plants. She is thinking of doing further studies in botany. She also wants to improve her English so that she can do further studies.\u201d said George.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>James was more than a little impressed by her. Her long hair tied in a knot. Her almond shaped face with a smile playing on her deep pink lips. Her very fair<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>skin attracting his eyes ceaselessly. Her tall graceful body drawing his attention from the business at hand.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>He wanted to say: \u201cI will be more than happy to spend time with her. Just sitting with her and teaching her English would be enjoyable. She could sit with me in the<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>evenings and learn English. She will learn some botany from me in the garden. Perhaps she will allow me to hold her hand,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Instead he said \u201c She is welcome to help Punya to arrange the meals and help the boys to arrange the garden. It does need weeding and new plants. Some of the old plants are in need of replacement. I\u2019m happy to help her with English. \u201d<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>\u201c Well James. That is all arranged. Could she start next Monday?\u201d asked Robert.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>James\u2019s excitement was almost<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>overtaking his rational thinking.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Yes. That\u2019s fine with me. We can arrange the visitor\u2019s room for her.\u201d said James.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Are you happy to start on Monday?\u201d asked Nanditha, concerned that her friend may not be quite ready.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Yes. I will start next Monday.\u201d said Savithri.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Good. Let\u2019s have some lunch. This is Punya\u2019s cooking. She cooks very mild. She gets some help from Sinniah.\u201d said James.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
