This is a village that is well known for the cultivation <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">of betel. Chewing betel leaves was a common tradition among the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">people of the county and the betel leaves played a prominent role in <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">the culture of the country. A sheaf of betel was offered to receive<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">people as a special mark of respect. This practice is carried on to date, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">and betel is offered as a respectful feature of invitation. For instance, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">even in modern Sri Lanka, wedding invitations to near and dear are <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">done presenting betel. Betel plays a prominent role in spiritual and <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">religious work in our country. \u201cDeheth\u201d is an important part of all<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">alms offered to the monks. In offerings to gods, betel forms an important part. Then in Ayurveda treatment, some medications are <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">served wrapped in betel leaves. Further, in country life, chewing betel <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">is an act of leisure and pleasure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><!--more--><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Sinhala language is rich in \u201cIdioms\u201d. \u201cGileemaleth etha datha suddo\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">meaning \u201cthat there are people with white teeth free from betel stains <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">even in Gileemale\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">There are two stories linked to the formation of the name <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cGileemale\u201d. I hope to discuss only one story here. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">It is linked to finding the pathway to \u201cSri Pada\u201d, the Adam\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">peak. According to the legends <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">and history it was during the time <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">of King Nissankamalla of Polonnaruwa, the foot print placed on <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">the mountain top now called \u201cSri <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Pada\u201d was discovered. The story <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">is that the Angels were picking <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">flowers from the King\u2019s garden <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">regularly to be offered to the Lord Buddha\u2019s foot print on the mountain top. The guards caught the angels and they gave the information <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">of the Lord Buddha\u201ds footprint on the mountain top and pledged to <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">drop flowers from the sky showing the pathway to the mountain top .<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">With this news the King immediately instructed the soldiers to follow <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">the flowers and reach this holy place. They were at last successful in <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">their tedious mission. In the area now known as Gileemale the soldiers found difficulty in detecting the dropped flowers as they were <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">sunk into the wet ground. So the area where the flowers were sunk to <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">the ground (mal giluna bima) was called \u201cGileemale\u201d.
