“Return” – a Poem<\/span><\/h1>\n

Some five decades ago, as co-editor of the S. Thomas\u2019 College magazine, I wrote this poem. It was published in the magazine then under the pen-name Junius (meaning \u201cYouthful One\u201d) \u2013 and I felt it appropriate (now that I am a Senex!) to publish again in the Thomiana to coincide with the 170th anniversary of my old school in Mount Lavinia, Sri Lanka.<\/span><\/p>\n

I glimpse afar the chapel tower \u2013<\/span>
\nmy heartbeat quickens, I hurry on.<\/span>
\nReaching at last the trellised gate<\/span>
\nI gaze upon the cherished scene<\/span>
\nI\u2019d longed to see.<\/span>
\nThro\u2019 all these years of wandering<\/span>
\nit lived with me in Memory\u2019s store \u2013<\/span>
\nthe College that I love so well.<\/span>
\nI walk on down the curving road \u2013<\/span>
\nechoing steps of bygone days.<\/span><\/p>\n


\nI cross the Quad and Fives courts \u2013 then<\/span>
\npass Winchester to Big Club grounds<\/span>
\nwhereon we played in days of yore.<\/span>
\nUpon the field are cricketers \u2013<\/span>
\nI watch their game and see in them<\/span>
\nthe ghosts of those who played with me.<\/span>
\nWhere are they now?<\/span>
\nThese playing boys they know me not \u2013<\/span>
\ne\u2019en who I was;<\/span>
\nI led the team some years ago.<\/span>
\nFor heroes are but short lived men<\/span>
\nwell known to all till the season ends<\/span><\/p>\n

And then the idol fades away<\/span>
\nforgotten as the years pass by.<\/span>
\nThe sun goes down \u2013 and setting bids me<\/span>
\nleave this scene. I move away,<\/span>
\npass belfry and the classrooms where<\/span>
\nin Mid School days we used to be \u2013<\/span>
\nunheeding Time,<\/span>
\nne\u2019er dreaming that the old school bell<\/span>
\nwould toll one day for us to leave<\/span>
\nthe College that we\u2019d loved so well.<\/span>
\nEsto Perpetua! Yet life goes on.<\/span>
\nIn the very dorm that we called Home<\/span>
\nAre Thomians of a new generation.<\/span>
\nSilent, I leave \u2013<\/span>
\nwith a backward glance as the twilight<\/span>
\nfalls.<\/span>
\nNostalgic scene!<\/span>
\nI yearn again for Youth to be<\/span>
\nWhen life was loved and lived, carefree.<\/span>
\nFor Time has passed as the years flowed<\/span>
\non \u2013<\/span>
\nAnd Time has passed me by<\/span><\/p>\n
