You are too old to go in a plane-by Capt Elmo Jayawardena<\/span><\/span><\/h1>\n

\"CaptI have this dear little friend, two feet two inches tall and 30 months old <\/span>and very closely connected to me, being my daughter\u2019s daughter.<\/span>
\nThe little vagabond was all excited as the foursome of her brother and <\/span>parents were travelling on holiday.<\/span>
\n\u201cI\u2019m going to the Australia,\u201d she proudly announces to me.<\/span>
\n\u201cHow are you going? Are you walking?\u201d that is a typical Seeya question, <\/span>simply to annoy the brat.<\/span>
\n\u201cI am going by plane.\u201d<\/span>
\n\u201cWhat are you going to do there?\u201d<\/span>
\n\u201cI go to beach.\u201d<\/span>
\nAll that she had gathered from the elder talk, she certainly had no clue <\/span>as to who or what \u201cthe Australia\u201d is.<\/span>
\n\u201cCan I come with you?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n


\n\u201cYou can\u2019t, you are too old to go in a plane.\u201d<\/span>
\nDoesn\u2019t that say it all? Forty plus years of punching holes in the sky and <\/span>this little Rumplestiltskin shoots me down and grins at me as if she <\/span>alone knows the truth about how old this gray bearded pelican is.<\/span>
\nYes, that is life, as beautiful as can be when one has the blessing and <\/span>the privilege of associating grandchildren and spending quality time <\/span>with them.<\/span><\/p>\n

You have to catch them young, in the midget mode before their legs <\/span>grow longer and their infant wisdom gets corrupted by day to day <\/span>delusions plus computer and TV megalomagic that eats away the <\/span>innocence. In no time they too join the rest of the \u201cknow all\u2019 brigade <\/span>who refuse to suffer \u2018seemingly\u2019 old fools. This is the inheritance of the <\/span>\u201cold club\u201d and I am fast travelling on the road for full membership and <\/span>want to make the best with this little ragamuffin whenever I can.<\/span><\/p>\n

I bought her a watch from a \u201cone dollar\u201d shop which she proudly wears and tells<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe little Ragamuffin\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

everyone it is a gift from <\/span>her Seeya. I made a pact <\/span>with her and signed an <\/span>agreement. It was for <\/span>something I was reading, <\/span>\u201cThe history of the Arab <\/span>People\u201d by Hourani. We <\/span>both agreed that the book <\/span>will be for her when I am<\/span>
\ngone and I wrote \u201cthis is for Lisara, her inheritance\u201d and signed and <\/span>placed the date as 10th October 2010 and she countersigned by <\/span>scrawling all over the page with her signature.<\/span>
\nContract made, Hourani\u2019s masterpiece kept on the shelf to be collected <\/span>when she is old enough to read.<\/span>
\nI like to think that one day when she is in the Revlon gloss and eye <\/span>shadow stage, perhaps mini skirt or long dress, whatever the fancy of <\/span>the era be, she might take this book and remember a dear old friend<\/span>
\n\u201cThe little Ragamuffin\u201d<\/span>
\nwho is no more and perhaps browse the pages and think of the times <\/span>we shared. It is a nice thought for me to carry, as I don\u2019t think I would <\/span>be there to see her in lipstick and mascara. <\/span>Of course there are many other things I share with her, inexpensive and <\/span>quality, available often if I find the time. Rowing in a canoe down a slow <\/span>dancing river where she sits on my lap and we both feel we own the <\/span>entire world. It is simply us and the river and we know the blue sky is <\/span>ours, the clouds sailing overhead are ours, the birds belong to us and <\/span>even the little waves that slap on the boat become our friends as they <\/span>come to say hello. That\u2019s what you can tell a kid, and she believes. It is <\/span>the marshmallow time of her life that I am blessed to share. <\/span>\u201cThe wind Seeya, where is he coming from?\u201d Hard call, too bad they <\/span>didn\u2019t teach me that in aviation schools. <\/span>\u201cIt\u2019s from the mountains darling, that is where he lives, he comes to <\/span>loaf and touch your face and ruffle your hair and go back home in the <\/span>night.\u201d She nods, point taken.<\/span>
\nWe go to a basketball court and we dribble, a kid chasing an old man to <\/span>the rhythm of a bouncing ball. She loves to press buttons in a lift, as <\/span>high as she can reach. I tried to make her climb a tree but she got <\/span>scared and clung to me, wasn\u2019t very happy on Tarzan talk. Of course I <\/span>taught her to sing, lullabies and then \u201csomewhere over the rainbow.\u201d<\/span>
\nShe held the tune and sang her version where the skies were boo. <\/span>The best is when she brings me paper and says \u201cSeeya, make me an <\/span>aeroplane.\u201d I fold and shape and the makeshift rockets fly and glide.<\/span>The little diamond eyes sparkle and we become aviators together, the <\/span>one washed up and the other a possible \u201cmaybe.\u201d Yes, that is life, I call <\/span>her every day from where I teach and she always asks \u201cSeeya are you in <\/span>school teaching fools?\u201d Innocent and warm and we both laugh. <\/span>Some nights I peep into her room and watch her sleep, silent and <\/span>serene, like a little angel, perhaps dreaming of eating Smarties or <\/span>cupcakes that I buy for her. <\/span>Life is like a book, the chapters are so many, long ones and short ones, <\/span>some are happy and some are sad. Some we remember and recall <\/span>touching nostalgic chords and some we try our best to erase and fail.<\/span><\/p>\n

The blacks and the whites are all there, a few pastel shades too, that\u2019s <\/span>what life is all about. Grandfather granddaughter chapters rate among <\/span>the best, honey coloured and laced with tangerine, less words but more<\/span>
\nfor the memory.<\/span><\/p>\n

Maybe she will remember <\/span>the time we spent <\/span>together. I certainly <\/span>would as I do not have <\/span>long to go and what<\/span><\/span>
\nhappens in life now is <\/span>mainly ambitionless <\/span>residual. But I am glad I <\/span>have her, to tell me things <\/span>like I am teaching fools and I am too old to go in a plane. <\/span>That\u2019s great, it makes me aware that I must count each day and make<\/span><\/span>
\nthe best, and be grateful that I have Smarties and cupcakes to buy and <\/span>make paper planes and row boats and own the sky.<\/span><\/span>

\nMy role as grandfather is great. My little friend sure is a handful of love <\/span>and mischief, but she is constantly colouring with crayons what little <\/span>rainbows I am blessed to see.<\/span><\/span>
