When that unicorn <\/span>known as spare time comes along, he likes to take <\/span>photos of birds and go camping. He currently lives in <\/span>Darwin, NT, but will be returning to QLD in the <\/span>very near future.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Just to address the elephant in the<\/span>
\nroom – <\/span>\u201cMy particular professional interests are in Public Health (think bird <\/span>flu and SARS), epidemiology and Veterinary teaching\u201d <\/span>So, I wrote that sentence over a decade ago in D\u00e6h\u00e6na \u2013 and hoo boy <\/span>haven\u2019t some of those themes become relevant recently?<\/span>
\nIn those 11 years since I wrote that little article, I\u2019ve completed my <\/span>degree in Veterinary Science (ticking that box of getting that honorarium of \u201cDr\u201d before my name), completed a Masters in veterinary public health, became a US-recognised specialist in Veterinary Preventive <\/span>Medicine, worked in a range of locations as a veterinarian, got married, <\/span>had a kid, and now work for the Government in the field of Biosecurity and exotic animal disease surveillance across northern Australia. <\/span>To quote Farmer Hogget from Babe \u2013 \u201cThat\u2019ll do pig\u201d<\/span>
\nWhich is pretty much the theme of what I\u2019m keen to write on \u2013 when <\/span>is it enough?<\/span><\/p>\n


\nI don\u2019t ever remember anyone having that chat about what the end <\/span>goal was \u2013 job security? A decent salary? A family? Unlimited smashed <\/span>avo on toast?<\/span>
\nI just find it funny that I\u2019ve spent the better part of my life forever <\/span>chasing career goals to suddenly be on the other side to go \u201cwait up, is <\/span>this what makes me sleep well at night?\u201d Cause in the end, it\u2019s not the <\/span>number of degrees I have nor the number of committees I have <\/span>chaired. It\u2019s those little moments of day-care drop offs\/pickups, the <\/span>secret hope that I\u2019ll finally cook a meal that will be eaten in its entirety <\/span>by a toddler, or the sweet joy of walking in the outback and appreciating the wonder of our unique wildlife. To paraphrase comedian<\/span>
\nHamish Blake, at some point in my life, I\u2019ll be 80 and would likely pay<\/span><\/p>\n

an infinite amount of money to relive these enriching moments than <\/span>the academic\/career\/financial pursuits we usually raise on a pedestal <\/span>as the end goal.<\/span>
