This variant, also known as C.37, and WHO has labelled as a \u201cvariant of <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">interest\u201d.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">There are now 11 official SARS-CoV-2 variants listed by the WHO.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">All SARS-CoV-2 variants are distinguished from one another by mutations in their <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">spike proteins \u2014 the components of the virus that allow it to invade human cells. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Spike proteins, found on the surface of the virus, are what enable the virus to attach <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">to and enter human cells, and all current vaccines are directed against them.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Spike protein is also the basis of current COVID-19 vaccines, which seek to generate <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">an immune response against it.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/7pBliwRd7ZU<\/span><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Website: <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">www.Doctorharold.com<\/span><\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">The findings indicate that mutations in the Beta variant change the shape of the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">spike surface at certain locations. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">For instance, the Delta variant first detected in India has two key spike protein <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">mutations \u2014 T478K and L452R \u2014 that allow it to infect cells more easily and evade <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">the body&#8217;s immune response, while lambda has seven unique protein mutations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><!--more--><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">While it&#8217;s possible that Lambda, new variant is indeed more infectious than other <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">variants, it&#8217;s too early to know for sure, said Kirsty Short, a virologist at the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">University of Queensland.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">On 23 June, Public Health England classified it as a \u2018variant under investigation, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">after six cases were detected in the UK to date, which were all linked to overseas <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">travel.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">This variant has spread to 29 countries, including Australia. This could be more <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">infectious and harder to tackle with vaccination. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">It has been brought to Australia by an overseas traveler who was in an hotel <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">quarantine in New South Wales, in April this year.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">It was first detected in Peru in December 2020. Since, it has spread to 29 countries, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">seven of which are in South America.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">In April and May this year, Lambda accounted for over 80 per cent of COVID-19 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">cases in Peru, with a high proportion of cases also in Chile, Argentina, and Ecuador. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Does it escape vaccines?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Even though there&#8217;s limited information available about whether or not the Lamda <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">variant escapes the vaccines, researchers in Chile have published the results of a <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">study they carried out. According to the conclusions of the preprint paper, mutations <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">present in the spike protein of the Lambda variant of interest confer increased<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">infectivity and immune escape from neutralizing antibodies triggered by CoronaVac, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">the Sinovac COVID-19 vaccine.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">While scientists at Public Health England (PHE), expressed concerns that the latest <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">strain of SARS-CoV-2 may spread quickly and may also be more resistant to <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">vaccines, they emphasized there was no evidence corroborating the Lambda variant <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">caused more severe disease or reduced the effectiveness of current vaccines.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">How Does AstraZeneca\u2019s COVID-19 Vaccine Compare to Pfizer\u2019s, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">AstraZeneca vaccine is cheap, easy to distribute and relies on different tech than its <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">competitors. Even better AstraZeneca\u2019s vaccine can be stored at normal refrigerator <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">temperatures, meaning it could be key to reaching people in rural and underfunded <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">areas, one of the most pressing issues in the fight against the novel coronavirus.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Safety and Efficacy <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Clinical trials for the Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines have shown that <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">these 2 vaccines are effective in preventing: <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">development of COVID-19 symptoms and <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">protecting against severe disease.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">These trials involve tens of thousands of participants worldwide.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">AstraZeneca vaccine is 76% effective against symptomatic coronavirus infections and <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">100% effective in preventing hospitalization and severe disease, according to an <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">interim analysis of its United States phase 3 trial, which included more than 32,000 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">people.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">It is also 85% efficacy against symptomatic COVID-19 in participants aged 65 and <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">over.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">The primary endpoint, vaccine efficacy at preventing symptomatic COVID-19 was <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">76% occurring 15 days or more after receiving two doses given four weeks apart. In <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">addition, results were comparable across age groups, with vaccine efficacy of 85% <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">(CI: 58% to 95%) in adults 65 years and older. A key secondary endpoint, preventing <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">severe or critical disease and hospitalisation, demonstrated 100% efficacy.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Is Pfizer Vaccine more effective than AstraZeneca vaccine in case you catch the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">infection or to prevent getting the infection. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Evidence suggests AstraZeneca and Pfizer are equally effective. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">A pre-print study from the UK recently found that real-world data suggest both <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines are equally effective, with no real difference in the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">level of protection offered.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">The research involved 373,402 participants, revealed the odds of being infected after <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">two doses of either vaccine were reduced by 70% compared to unvaccinated <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">indiduals without prior infection, with no evidence that the benefits varied between <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">the AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Risk of rare blood clotting <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">In over 480,000 people receiving a COVID-19 mRNA vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna),<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">CVT occurred in 4 in a million. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">CVT has been reported to occur in about 5 in a million people after first dose of the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">AZ-Oxford COVID-19 vaccine.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">With the two vaccines currently in circulation in Australia, Dr Kylie Quinn, Group <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Head and Research Fellow at RMIT\u2019s School of Health and Biomedical Science, told <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">newsGP the results are good news.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u2018This is the kind of real-world data that we need to really understand how these <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">vaccines perform,\u2019 she said.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Associate Professor James Wood, a leading vaccine expert at the University of New <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">South Wales, agrees, and says the findings provide reassurance Australia is on the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">right path.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Which COVID-19 vaccines are efficacious against the variants?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Researchers around the world are sifting through data to determine how the leading <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">COVID-19 vaccines are doing against the variants of concern. Now, a big pre-print <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">study from Ontario suggests that the vaccines used in Canada\u2014Pfizer, Moderna and <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">AstraZeneca\u2014are very effective against the four big variants of concern: Alpha<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">(B.1.1.7), Beta (B.1.351), Gamma (P.1), and Delta (B.1.617.2). <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cOur findings suggest that even a single dose of these three vaccine products provides <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">good to excellent protection against symptomatic infection and severe outcomes <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">caused by the four currently circulating variants of concern, and that two doses are <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">likely to provide even higher protection,\u201d the authors concluded. The study\u2019s results\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">showed that being fully vaccinated gives a person roughly the same protection <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">against Delta as Alpha, Beta and Gamma.
