World Cancer Day highlights the need for cancer awareness in Victoria s multicultural communities\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n

Cancer Council Victoria is calling for greater awareness about cancer prevention and support in<\/span>
\nVictoria\u2019s multicultural communities, ahead of World Cancer Day.<\/span><\/p>\n

World Cancer Day (4 February) aims to reduce illness and death caused by cancer around the world.<\/span>
\nIn Victoria approximately one quarter of the total cancer diagnoses are in migrants and refugees born<\/span>
\noverseas in non-English speaking countries.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cancer Council Victoria Diversity Advisor Neela Konara said that World Cancer Day is an opportunity<\/span>
\nto increase cancer awareness amongst people from multicultural backgrounds.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe live in a multicultural state; we\u2019re from around 200 different countries, speak over 260 languages<\/span>
\nand follow 135 different faiths and religions1\u00a0,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cResearch shows that migrants and refugees are less likely to screen and test for cancer and, as a<\/span>
\nresult, experience poor health outcomes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Ms Konara said that while many free prevention, screening, and support services are available in<\/span>
\nVictoria, the services are under-utilised by many people from multicultural backgrounds.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBetter awareness about cancer prevention and support is needed to help people from multicultural<\/span>
\ncommunities to access the services and navigate the healthcare system,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe have found that some migrants and refugees have different perceptions or beliefs about cancer.<\/span>
\nOthers are not aware that screening is available, or that early detection can help to save their life.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s important that we take care of our health by using the services which help to diagnose cancer<\/span>
\nearly and improve treatment options.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOne third of all cancers are preventable.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cCancer Council Victoria offers a range of free cancer prevention, screening and support services to<\/span>
\nhelp.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
