{"id":7031,"date":"2016-02-06T18:17:45","date_gmt":"2016-02-06T18:17:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/?p=7031"},"modified":"2016-02-07T18:41:28","modified_gmt":"2016-02-07T18:41:28","slug":"melder-family-golden-jubilee-in-australia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/melder-family-golden-jubilee-in-australia\/","title":{"rendered":"MELDER FAMILY &#8211; GOLDEN JUBILEE IN AUSTRALIA"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\">MELDER FAMILY \u2013 GOLDEN JUBILEE IN AUSTRALIA<\/h1>\n<p>By Victor Melder,   January 30,   2016<\/p>\n<p>The descendants of the Melder family \u2013 Randolph Joseph Churchill Melder &amp; Phyllis Dagmar Bulner, celebrated the Golden Jubilee of their arrival in Australia, in December 1965,<br \/>\nwith a gathering of the clan at Woodlands Park, Essendon, on Sunday, December 6, 2015.<\/p>\n<p>The first two members of the family (the second and third), Tony &amp; Hilton, arrived in Melbourne, Australia on board the SS Orsova, on September 23, 1965. On arrival they lived<br \/>\nwith a paternal Aunt, Mrs Tera Phillips, at Thornbury. Both Tony &amp; Hilton who were employed by the Ceylon Government Railway, obtained employment with the Victorian Railways.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7064\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7064\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/melder-family-golden-jubilee-in-australia\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7064 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/MELDER-FAMILY-1.jpg\" alt=\"MELDER FAMILY 1\" width=\"600\" height=\"456\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7064\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Taken at Nugegoda, Sri Lanka, mid July 1965, prior to departing for Australia. Front Row: L to R \u2013 Trudy, Philomena (Phil) and Geralyn.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>They then rented a house at 219, Raleigh Street, Thornbury, in the vicinity of their Aunt\u2019s house. This was in preparation for the arrival of our parents and other members of the family,<br \/>\nwho arrived in Melbourne on December 17, 1965, on board the SS Himalaya. (Those who arrived at this time were: Dad, Mum, Kevin, Derrick, Sharlie, Gerard, Philomena, Geralyn<br \/>\nand Trudy).<\/p>\n<p>The family lived at this residence until December 1966, when they moved to new accommodation at 499, Barry Road, Broadmeadows. Meanwhile the elder members of the family<br \/>\nwere employed in Melbourne and travelled to work and back daily by either train or motor vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>Dad, who had retired from the CGR, in December 1963, as a \u2018Special Class Engine Driver\u2019, aged 57 years, after 40 years of service, was now employed by the Victorian State Public<br \/>\nService and like many members of the Burgher community in Melbourne at the time, worked at the Motor Registration Branch. Tony &amp; Hilton, had by then also left the Victorian<br \/>\nRailways and were employed by the Victorian Public Service.<\/p>\n<p>Derrick completed a Plumbing &amp; Gas Fitters Course, being awarded the \u2018Apprentice of the Year\u2019, at the time. He worked for the Federal Government \u2018Department of Housing<br \/>\n&amp; Construction\u2019. During his tenure with the said department, he led two teams in successive years to Antarctica, and was responsible for the construction of two power stations and other<br \/>\nfacilities at Mawson and Davis Stations.<\/p>\n<p>The four younger members of the family, finished their schooling at Upfield High School. The rail terminus on the line was Upfield, affectionately known as \u201cUdukumbura\u201d by the family,<br \/>\nfor this is what the area looked like in the winter months.<\/p>\n<p>Two other members of the family, Victor &amp; Patrick (who were married), were still in Ceylon (Sri Lanka).<\/p>\n<p>Patrick, his wife and daughter were the next to arrive in Melbourne. They too lived at Barry\u2019s Road, Broadmeadows, for short time, until they rented suitable accommodation at Thornbury.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the eldest member of the family, Victor, his wife and two children arrived in Melbourne on March 13, 1968, flying into Essendon Airport. Victor too was employed by the CGR<br \/>\nas an Engine Driver. He resigned his position, whilst stationed at Galle. They too lived at Barry Road, Broadmeadows, until they rented accommodation at Thornbury.<\/p>\n<p>Victor was employed by the Victorian State Public Service, beginning his 25-year career at the Fisheries &amp; Wildlife Department, retiring in April 1993 from the Department of Conservation<br \/>\n&amp; Environment. During his tenure in the State Public Service, he served at various times at the National Parks Service, Forrest Commission and Environment Protection Authority.<\/p>\n<p>With the passage of time, all members of the family but one, were married and moved to their own accommodation, finally leaving Dad &amp; Mum on their own. They both then moved to live<br \/>\nwith a daughter, Philomena and family at Alfred Road, Essendon.<\/p>\n<p>Dad passed away in December 1989, aged 83. Mum continued living with Philomena until she sold the property and moved elsewhere. Mum then continued to live with Derrick, the bachelor<br \/>\nin the family. It was on the same street, a few doors up. Mum passed away in December 2008, six months after celebrating her 90th birthday.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7065\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7065\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/melder-family-golden-jubilee-in-australia\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7065 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/MELDER-FAMILY-2.jpg\" alt=\"MELDER FAMILY 2\" width=\"600\" height=\"418\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7065\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Taken at Alfred Road, Essendon, 35 years after the original photo was taken at Nugegoda, Sri Lanka, mid July 1965.
