The census identified a total population of 2.4 million spread across the islands of Sri Lanka.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The census of 1871 demonstrates <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the staggering diversity present on <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the islands of Sri Lanka and is a <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">reminder of the mixed origins of <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the current population. Individuals <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">from at least 79 distinct races (as <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">stated on the census) lived on the <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">island at the time, and included<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">communities from Portugal, Netherlands, England, France, Switzerland, Germany, Ireland, and Scotland amongst others. Communities such as the Bengali, Brahmin, <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Carnatic, Chetty, Maratha and <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Pattan (Afghan) from greater <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hindustan were also present.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Moors, Turks, Parsees and Jewish <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">individuals arrived from the Middle East, whilst the Malays and <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Javans arrived from the Indonesian archipelago. The slave trade <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">had also brought many individuals <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">from the African continent, Papua New Guinea and the Philippines.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Many American, Canadian and Chinese communities were also present. The current Sri Lankan population of 21 million is likely a result of natural intermixing between the many communities identified <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">in the census and beyond.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><!--more--><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">If the current population is an amalgamation of the various communities identified in the 1871 census, why do Sri Lankans fail to identify, accept and revel in the nation\u2019s diversity? Many factors including <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">political and religious views, coupled with ignorance of the historical<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">diversity of Sri Lanka may contribute to a reluctance to embrace diversity. Additionally, scientific research on Sri Lankan history and <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">diversity have often been published in English, and the limited use of <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">English across the island since the implementation of the Official<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Language Act may also limit our capacity to access and understand <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">knowledge about diversity. Although Sri Lankan society fails to consciously accept its ethnic diversity, the presence of this diversity is <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">intricately woven into the tapestry of life on the island in our shared<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">traditions, food, cultural practices and music.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Though many Sri Lankans often falsely believe that these communities are a thing of the past, they continue to exist in and are present<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">in each of us due to decades of intermixing within the islands. With a <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">flexible, non-judgmental attitude and an open mind, we can create<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">safe spaces for individuals to discuss our distinct and shared ethnic <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and cultural identities.
