All of these are from primary sources.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Irena Sendler was born as Irena Krzy\u017canowska on 15 February 1910 in Warsaw to Dr. Stanis\u0142aw Krzy\u017canowski, a physician, and his wife, Janina. Her father died in February 1917 from typhus contracted while treating patients whom his colleagues refused to treat in fear of contracting the disease, among them many Jews. After his death, Jewish community leaders offered her mother help in paying for Sendler\u2019s education. Sendler studied Polish literature at Warsaw University. She opposed the ghetto-bench system that existed at some prewar Polish universities and defaced her grade card. The play was a surprising success, staged over 200 times in the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\">United States<\/a>\u00a0and abroad, and it significantly contributed to publicizing Sendler&#8217;s story.\u00a0In March 2002,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Temple,_Congregation_B%27nai_Jehudah\">Temple B&#8217;nai Jehudah<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kansas_City_metropolitan_area\">Kansas City<\/a>\u00a0presented Sendler, Conard, and the students who produced the play with its annual award &#8220;for contributions made to saving the world&#8221; (<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tikkun_olam\">Tikkun olam<\/a>\u00a0award). The play was adapted for television as\u00a0<em><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Courageous_Heart_of_Irena_Sendler\">The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(2009), directed by\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Kent_Harrison\">John Kent Harrison<\/a>, in which Sendler was portrayed by actress\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anna_Paquin\">Anna Paquin<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">In 2003,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pope_John_Paul_II\">Pope John Paul II<\/a>\u00a0sent Sendler a personal letter praising her wartime efforts.\u00a0On 10 November 2003, she received the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Order_of_the_White_Eagle_(Poland)\">Order of the White Eagle<\/a>, Poland&#8217;s highest civilian decoration,\u00a0and the Polish-American award, the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jan_Karski\">Jan Karski<\/a>\u00a0Award &#8220;For Courage and Heart&#8221;, given by the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Council_for_Polish_Culture\">American Center of Polish Culture<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Washington,_D.C.\">Washington, D.C.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">In 2006, Polish\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Non-governmental_organization\">NGOs<\/a>\u00a0<em>Centrum Edukacji Obywatelskiej<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Stowarzyszenie Dzieci Holocaustu<\/em>, the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ministry_of_Foreign_Affairs_(Poland)\">Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Poland<\/a>, and the Life in a Jar Foundation established the Irena Sendler&#8217;s Award &#8220;For Repairing the World&#8221; (<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/pl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nagroda_imienia_Ireny_Sendlerowej_%22Za_naprawianie_%C5%9Bwiata%22\">pl:Nagroda imienia Ireny Sendlerowej &#8220;Za naprawianie \u015bwiata&#8221;<\/a>), awarded to Polish and American teachers.\u00a0The Life in a Jar Foundation is a foundation dedicated to promoting the attitude and message of Irena Sendler.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">On 14 March 2007, Sendler was honoured by the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Senate_of_Poland\">Senate of Poland<\/a>,\u00a0and a year later, on 30 July, by the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Congress\">United States Congress<\/a>. On 11 April 2007, she received the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Order_of_the_Smile\">Order of the Smile<\/a>; at that time, she was the oldest recipient of the award.\u00a0In 2007 she became an honorary citizen of the cities of\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Warsaw\">Warsaw<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tarczyn\">Tarczyn<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Posthumously<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">In April 2009 Sendler was posthumously granted the Humanitarian of the Year award from The Sister\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rose_Thering\">Rose Thering<\/a>\u00a0Endowment,\u00a0and in May 2009, Sendler was posthumously granted the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Audrey_Hepburn\">Audrey Hepburn<\/a>\u00a0Humanitarian Award.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Around this time American filmmaker Mary Skinner filmed a documentary,\u00a0<em>Irena Sendler, In the Name of Their Mothers<\/em>\u00a0(Polish:\u00a0<em>Dzieci Ireny Sendlerowej<\/em>), featuring the last interviews Sendler gave before her death. The film made its national U.S. broadcast premiere through KQED Presents on\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/PBS\">PBS<\/a>\u00a0in May 2011 in honor of Holocaust Remembrance Day\u00a0and went on to receive several awards, including the 2012\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gracie_Award\">Gracie Award<\/a>\u00a0for outstanding public television documentaries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">In 2010 a memorial plaque commemorating Sendler was added to the wall of 2 Pawi\u0144skiego Street in Warsaw\u00a0\u2013 a building in which she worked from 1932 to 1935. In 2015 she was honoured with another memorial plaque at 6 Ludwiki Street, where she lived from the 1930s to 1943.\u00a0Several schools in Poland have also been named after her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">In 2013 the walkway in front of the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/POLIN_Museum_of_the_History_of_Polish_Jews\">POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews<\/a>\u00a0in Warsaw was named after Sendler.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">In 2016, a permanent exhibit was established to honor Sendler&#8217;s life at the Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes museum, in\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fort_Scott,_Kansas\">Fort Scott<\/a>, KS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gal_Gadot\">Gal Gadot<\/a>\u00a0has been cast to play Sendler in a historic thriller written by Justine Juel Gillmer and produced by Pilot Wave.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">On February 15, 2020,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google\">Google<\/a>\u00a0celebrated her 110th birthday with a\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Google_Doodle\">Google Doodle<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Literature<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">In 2010, Polish historian Anna Mieszkowska wrote a biography\u00a0<em>Irena Sendler: Mother of the Children of the Holocaust<\/em>.\u00a0In 2011, Jack Mayer tells the story of the four Kansas school girls and their discovery of Irena Sendler in his novel\u00a0<em>Life in a Jar: The Irena Sendler Project<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">In 2016,\u00a0<em>Irena&#8217;s Children<\/em>, a book about Sendler written by Tilar J. Mazzeo, was released by\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Simon_%26_Schuster\">Simon &amp; Schuster<\/a>.
