It was time in the forties, the story happened so many years <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">ago. The meat of the matter lay in Koggala, the little hamlet nestled between the palm fringed <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">sea and the bucolic Koggala Lake two hours\u201f drive from Colombo. That\u201fs where I headed this <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">time to chase wild geese.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We stayed a night in Galle, at The Light House Hotel, service par excellence, pampered and <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">petalled with food fit to feed gods. In the morning we drove south, along the Matara road, <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">looking for the turn off to Ahangama where Katuluwa Walauwa is, that\u201fs where Justin held fort. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Justin\u201fs family had been the Lords of Katuluwa for centuries, the usual father to son and <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">grandson heritage, the change of role could be traced back to the Portuguese times when the vice <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">royal in Goa gifted this land to Justin\u201fs ancestors. Well, that\u201fs another story, I\u201fll come back to it <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">some other day.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As for now, it is long forgotten aeroplanes and Koggala Lake and what Justin remembered to tell <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">me to tell the world.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On one side as we drove was the sea, cobalt blue with white form crested waves, rushing and <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">gushing to break on the granite boulders that stood like sentinels. On the other side we passed the <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Koggala airfield where I had landed Tiger-moth in my fledgling days as a sky tramp. Years <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">before this small airstrip came, the lake had been a hallmark in aviation history. There were <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Koggala today &#8211; the lake, the sea and the Runway <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">grand ancient aviators who took-off and landed from Koggala Lake. Most of them are now dead <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and buried, and so are their aeroplanes, all scuttled at sea after the war. Only one replica is <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">embalmed in a museum in New Zealand. What is left of the story now are scant reminders, <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">scratches of aviation history that prop up now and then when clowns like me scuttle back down <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">memory lane chasing moonbeams to bring forgotten fairy tales to light.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The boat was a ramshackle relic that had seen better days. It had faithfully served some <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">fishermen in the by gone years and now having suffered its share of the sea\u201fs battering and <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">bashing had been pastured to strut up and down the mellow lake. The once colorful paint job has<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">peeled and burnt with time and has now become a faded mix between blue and green. Even the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">planks showed signs of rot where the wood cracked and grinned from above the waterline. The <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">fifteen hp engine coughed and cried as we crawled our way across the Koggala Lake under the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">scorching noonday sun.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-70870 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Koggala-today-2-e1628439878970.jpg\" alt=\"Koggala today\" width=\"600\" height=\"307\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Justin directed the boatman and did finger pointing navigation whilst rattling to us the forgotten <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">sagas of the lake. \u201eThat\u201fs where they made Gam Peraliya,\u201d he announced with glee showing a <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">house where they filmed Lester James\u201f immortalized movie. \u201cThat\u201fs Madol D\u016bwa,\u201d the island <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">lay to windward, green and silent in its pastoral beauty, known well among school children who <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">read Martin Wickremasinghe\u201fs literary classic. Diagonally opposite Madol D\u016bwa was the little <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">airfield I mentioned before, located on one corner of the lake, the black serpent like tarred <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">runway dividing the lush green and a national flag fluttering from a tall white mast advertising <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">the Air Force ownership. Far away on the North side was Madin D\u016bwa, now renamed Bird <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Island to give a touristic twang to benefit the dollar donors. The Koggala Lake lay in its vast <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">splendor, sleepy and silent, as beautiful as it has ever been.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">The boat spluttered to pass a small island of rocks, \u201cThis is where the windsock was,\u201d Justin <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">explained. We rounded the rocks and faced the longest stretch of the lake extending beyond two <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">miles. \u201cThis is where they started the takeoff run,\u201d said Justin who as a thirteen-year-old kid has <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">seen them all. \u201cWe spent our holidays in the Bird Island and watched the aeroplanes take off,\u201d he <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Justin &#8211; he probably was the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">last link to the Double <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Sunrise story <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Capt Russel Tapps &#8211; He flew the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">first Double Sunrise flight. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">drew from memory and gave his eyewitness testimony. \u201cThey raced on the water a long distance <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">and lifted off and climbed away barely skimming the tree-line at the far end,\u201d Justin reminisced.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">I stood on the boat and stared. This here then was the water runway of the Koggala Lake. The <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">exact place where some Captain synchronised his gyros, tested controls, pushed his thrust levers <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">and revved his engines to go. I\u201fve done the same a thousand times in thousand runways. But that <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">is nothing. This would have been all so different. The sheer romanticism alone was something <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">the pilot in me could barely imagine in my wildest dreams. What are modern heavy jets and neon <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">lighted runways? This here was the \u201creal-deal,\u201d the incomparable beauty of flight transformed <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">into reality by men who dared to buck the odds and perhaps became half birds themselves in the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">execution of their indomitable task. The water here was where they took off in their cumbersome <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">seaplane on its long journey from Koggala Lake to Swan River Perth on the West Australian <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">coast. 28 hours of non-stop flying on a Catalina Flying boat, flown by Qantas Imperial Airways <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">pilots, the longest leg of Qantas\u201f link flight between London and Sydney, in the war-torn years of <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">the forties. The flight was so long that the passengers saw the sun rise twice whilst being <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">strapped to their seats. That is how the name \u201cflight of the double sunrise,\u201d came about and <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">entered Koggala to the record books in the world of aeroplanes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Justin remembers everything, event and detail of a forgotten saga. \u201cIt was war time,\u201d he recalled. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cMy father was the Mudaliyar, the highest local official for the Koggala area in the British <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Colonial administration. The orders came from his superiors, all the villagers residing within a <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">radius of five miles from the Koggala Lake were ordered to evacuate their homes and leave <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">within 24 hours,\u201d Justine detailed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-70871\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Qantas-memorial-on-Swan-River-bank..jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"406\" height=\"410\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Qantas memorial on Swan River bank.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">No one could protest, this was \u201cRule Britannia,\u201d time. Justin\u201fs father was to see that no one <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">remained in the vicinity of the Koggala Lake. By noon the next day no one remained. The lake <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">went silent; the fishermen packed their measly mote and went away to the unknown. Justin\u201fs<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">father was allowed to remain; he was the big boss representing his bigger White bosses. It was <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">just to make sure no one retuned. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">That\u201fs when the Royal Air Force came to take over the Koggala Lake, to demarcate the water <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">runway, fix the windsock and prepare it to accept the long flying seaplanes.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">&#8212;&#8211;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">It was 1942; the Japanese were occupying the Malayan peninsula. The Qantas Imperial flight, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">London to Sydney had lost its refueling point of Singapore between Calcutta and Perth. The <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">flight had to be kept, the link maintained at any cost. An alternate route had to be found. Sri<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Lanka was the best bet and that too, if possible, the southernmost tip to take maximum advantage <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">to minimize the distance to the Australian coast. Hence, the mapmakers took their protractors <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">and their slide rulers out and made their calculations, Koggala to Perth \u2013 long and dangerous, but <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">possible, that\u201fs when Justin\u201fs father got his orders to evacuate the fishermen.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u2026.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">There were five Qantas aeroplanes that flew this route. They were all named after the stars; <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Antares, Rigel, Spica, Vega and Altair, magnificent luminaries of the Milky Way. The names <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">were apt as these were the main stars by which the aeroplanes deduced their celestial navigation. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">That was the only form of directions available as radio silence had to be maintained from <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Koggala to Perth. Japanese fighters were dominating the skies over the Indian Ocean. The <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Qantas machines were 16000 kg Catalina Flying boats with two Pratt &amp; Whitney Twin Wasp <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">piston engines of 1200 hp. They cruised at 98 knots per hour and were fitted with extra fuel tanks <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">to last the impossibly long leg. The 5652 km journey lasted an average of 28 hours and when <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">winds were unfavourable it dragged to more than 30 hours, the longest being an astounding 32 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">hours and 9 minutes. This is the longest non-stop regular passenger flight ever attempted. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">The first flight came from Perth and landed in Koggala on the 30th of June 1943 under the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">command of Captain Russell Tapp. The last flight was on 18th July 1945. The aeroplanes carried <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">3 passengers and 69 kg of mail. 271 crossings were made carrying 648 passengers; each <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">passenger was given a certificate illustrating their membership to \u201cThe Rare and Secret Order of <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">the double Sunrise\u201d. In all its two-years of operation, the star named Catalinas flew the Indian <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Ocean facing every possible aviation hazard. Yet they had the unequaled proud record of ending <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">the enormous episode without a single mishap or accident. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">In aviation terms it was a phenomenal feat of absolute skill and <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">meticulous preparation performed by pure professionals who obviously knew what they were <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">doing.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">&#8212;-<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Capt. Russel Tapp<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Out there to Swan River, that\u201fs where our wild goose chase next took us. The memories of these <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">unique flights are better kept on the Australian shore. There is a plaque inserted in a granite <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">boulder, placed there by Qantas, on the east bank of the river, in loving memory of their historic <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">flights flown during the war years. People stop by, grandfathers pointing fingers and explaining <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">to grandsons what they knew or heard about the long record-breaking aeroplanes that took off <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">and headed to a little-known lake in an unknown place called Koggala. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">As to our end, there is no written evidence for the interested to read nor plaques inserted to <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">granite to stand beside and take photographs. The Grandfathers here are dead and the Grandsons <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">may have no interest. Years have rolled and time has reduced the once renowned water airfield <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">from magical to the mundane. Only the fishermen are there, in their dugout canoes baiting their <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">fish and they know nothing of star named aeroplanes that landed and took off on their beloved <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">lake.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">But then what are Qantas plaques on granite boulders compared to Justin? <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">The expert sits there at Katuluwa Walauwa, his ancestral home from where his father ruled the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">hamlet. Here is the verbal evidence, honest and accurate, Justin\u201fs unvarnished sentiments recited <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">by recall, exactly as it happened. Stories of Bird Island and how he stood and watched the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">cumbersome Catalinas skim the water in their two-mile run to lift off, clearing the trees by <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">whiskers as they made their way over the ocean to the far away Swan River in Perth. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">The memories are all there, very much intact, to be described in fine detail. Maybe to answer a <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">question or two, maybe to re-live a moment or a few, about a time when Koggala Lake entered <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">aviation history as part participant of the record-breaking flights of the double sunrise.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Capt.
