I think that this is one that was published a year or two ago, but that really doesn&#8217;t matter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Interesting &#8220;repeats&#8221; are, very often, welcomed by people who remember our Motherland with the love and respect it truly deserves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-29898 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Desmond-Kelly-8.jpg\" alt=\"Desmond Kelly\" width=\"125\" height=\"178\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Desmond Kelly.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">(Editor-in-Chief) e&#8217;Lanka.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 24px; color: #000000;\"><b>Do you know the best residential area in Colombo during the Dutch times?\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Yes it was<\/strong><strong>\u00a0&#8216;Grandpass&#8217; :\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><strong>(from Grande Passo)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Some old Dutch houses and even a Dispensary are still there?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Other interesting names that still survive from those days<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Main Street<\/strong><strong>: (Roa Direto)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>The Dutch remembered one of their governors \u2013\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Hulft<\/strong><strong>\u00a0who died during the siege of Colombo, with\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Hulftsdorp<\/strong><strong>\u00a0and recalled some of their native place names like\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Leyden<\/strong><strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Delft<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>The Dutch named\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Maliban Street<\/strong><strong>\u00a0to identify the fashionable promenade in Pettah \u2013 Maliban meaning the MMall.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Kayman&#8217;s Gate<\/strong><strong>\u00a0refers to &#8216;kayman&#8217; \u2013 crocodiles that were found in the area where the rivulet entered the sea.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Wolvendaal<\/strong><strong>\u00a0meant the dale of wolves.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Bloemendahl<\/strong><strong> is a vale of flowers<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Korteboam<\/strong><strong>\u00a0means short trees.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Beira<\/strong><strong>\u00a0(mythology), the mother to all the gods and goddesses in the Celtic mythology of Scotland.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>There was a time when\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Kollupitiya<\/strong><strong>\u00a0was known as Baradeniya. It was a beautiful rustic village with coconut gardens and cinnamon trees that grew wild and narrow cart-tracks which connected the few villas and homes here with the rest of the country.\u00a0 For the purpose of postal services `Colombo 03\u2019 consists of Kollupitiya.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>How\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Baradeniya<\/strong><strong>\u00a0became Kollupitiya &#8211; The year was 1664 and the king was\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Rajasinghe II<\/strong><strong>\u00a0whose cruel acts embittered his subjects. Three Kandyan chiefs sought to slay the king and place his 12-year-old son on the throne. One of the conspirators was\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Udanuwara Ambanwela Appuhamy<\/strong><strong>. When the plot failed, the king had two of the rebel leaders beheaded. However, instead of executing Abanwela Appuhamy, the most feared of the rebels, he handed him over to the Dutch to undergo what he thought would be a more brutal torture. Instead, the Dutch set him free.\u00a0\u00a0 Ambanwela Appuhamy took the Dutch name of\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Van Ry-clof<\/strong><strong>f and built up a good relationship with the Dutch who gave him a large plot of land by the sea where he grew a coconut plantation which soon expanded over the ancestral farms of the natives who dared not complain. They could only retaliate by calling the plantation\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Kolla-ke-pitiya<\/strong><strong>\u00a0meaning &#8216;Plundered land&#8217;. Today, there is still an area in Kollupitiya that is called\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Polwatte<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>The footprints of\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Galle Face<\/strong><strong>\u00a0(Colombo 03) begins with Galle face south of Colombo Fort (Colombo 01).\u00a0 Originally a vast swamp, the<\/strong><strong>Portuguese<\/strong><strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Dutch<\/strong><strong>\u00a0used this piece of land as a strategic defense. It was the\u00a0<\/strong><strong>British<\/strong><strong>\u00a0who developed the Green into a leisure ground. \u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>The 19th century paintings of\u00a0<\/strong><strong>John Deschamps<\/strong><strong>, show the Galle-Face esplanade with a high road running through the centre of it.\u00a0 Added later was a promenade by the sea and a driveway bordering the lake where the\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Dutch Military cemetery<\/strong><strong>\u00a0was.\u00a0 Deschamps describes it as forming not only the principal exercising ground of the garrison, but also the general promenade of the inhabitants of Colombo and its vicinity. On foot, on horseback, or in carriages, people flocked to this salubrious setting to inhale the delicious breeze which is almost always to be found by the sea side of this part of the Island.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>The Galle Face esplanade<\/strong><strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Green<\/strong><strong>\u00a0was established by\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Governor Ward<\/strong><strong>\u00a0in 1859. An inscription reads &#8220;in the interest of the ladies and children of Colombo\u201d.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Cricket<\/strong><strong>,\u00a0<\/strong><strong>football<\/strong><strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/strong><strong>polo<\/strong><strong>\u00a0were played on the Green. In 1829,\u00a0<\/strong><strong>horse racing<\/strong><strong>\u00a0was established under the auspices of\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Sir Edward Barnes<\/strong><strong>.\u00a0 Everyone enjoyed a day at the races: the vendors poured in from early\u00a0noon, servants on leave spent their day there, as well as schoolboys who didn\u2019t make it to school, palanquin carriages with shutters down and curtain drawn conveying\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Mohammedan ladies<\/strong><strong>\u00a0and of course the European community. A circular race stand was built by subscription. Initially it was a building of brick, coated with a plaster of chunam. Its conical roof was covered with an excellent thatch of\u00a0<\/strong><strong>kehjan<\/strong><strong>\u00a0(woven coconut leaves). From here a view of the whole course could be obtained. The\u00a0<\/strong><strong>race-balls<\/strong><strong>\u00a0were held here, the upper room being cool and airy for dancing;\u00a0<\/strong><strong>card-tables<\/strong><strong>\u00a0were placed in the verandahs, whilst the lower portion formed a good\u00a0<\/strong><strong>supper-room<\/strong><strong>. Subsequently the roof was tiled. By the 1870s it had become a more substantial building and was known as the\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Colombo Club<\/strong><strong>. This building still stands, even though maybe not in its original modest form, and is now the Crystal Ballroom of the\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Taj Samudra<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Hotel Colombo.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>At one end of the green was the\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Galle Face Boarding House<\/strong><strong>, forerunner of the present\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Galle Face Hotel<\/strong><strong>, which was constructed in 1887.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Today the green has lost much in its extent; but after a long period of neglect has recently been restored back to the chief leisure ground of modern Colombo for people of all walks of life.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>A\u00a0<\/strong><strong>temple<\/strong><strong>, a\u00a0<\/strong><strong>church<\/strong><strong>, a\u00a0<\/strong><strong>school<\/strong><strong>, Kollupitiya\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Walukarama Buddhist Temple<\/strong><strong>is said to be the oldest temple in Colombo. It was founded in the 1800s by\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Ven. Panditha Valane Sri Siddhahatta Maha Nayake Thera<\/strong><strong>, who was also the founder member of the\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Maha Sangha Saba<\/strong><strong>\u00a0of the\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Siyam Nikaya<\/strong><strong>\u00a0of the Kotte Chapter. The land for the construction of the temple was donated by a famous indigenous medicine physician of Kollupitiya,\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Arnolis Silva<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>St. Andrew\u2019s Scots Kirk\u00a0<\/strong><strong>founded in 1842 as a\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Church of Scotland<\/strong><strong>\u00a0by Scots living in Ceylon, has today become the International Church in Colombo welcoming into its fellowship people of all nations and denominations of the Christian faith.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Jinaraja Kanista Vidyalaya<\/strong><strong>\u00a0down\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Dharmakirthi Ramya Road<\/strong><strong>\u00a0dates back to 1898. Then named &#8220;<\/strong><strong>Jinaraja Buddhist English School<\/strong><strong>&#8221; this was the oldest Buddhist English mixed school in Colombo. This school was established for boys and girls of Colombo managed by the\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Buddhist Theosophical Society<\/strong><strong>, Colombo, under the guidance of\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Col. Henry Steele Olcott<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>A\u00a0<\/strong><strong>jeweller<\/strong><strong>, a\u00a0<\/strong><strong>textile dealer<\/strong><strong>, a\u00a0<\/strong><strong>baker<\/strong><strong>, a\u00a0<\/strong><strong>grocer<\/strong><strong>, an\u00a0<\/strong><strong>optician<\/strong><strong>\u00a0and a\u00a0<\/strong><strong>private hospital<\/strong><strong>\u00a0in\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Galle Face Court 1<\/strong><strong>\u00a0was the\u00a0<\/strong><strong>first multi storey block of flats\u00a0<\/strong><strong>in Sri Lanka and the domed addition which followed as\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Galle Face Court 2<\/strong><strong>\u00a0were both buildings that were initiated by the\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Macan Markar\u00a0<\/strong><strong>family as residential, business and real estate ventures. The dome housed an\u00a0<\/strong><strong>observatory<\/strong><strong>.
