Lentil as Anything fundraises for wages, rent as Thornbury outlet faces eviction <\/span><\/h1>\n

Social enterprise Lentil as Anything has launched a fundraiser to pay its own staff at the Thornbury \u201cpay-as-you-feel\u201d restaurant where they are facing eviction, after multiple reports of financial mismanagement and wage underpayment across the institution.<\/span><\/p>\n

The venue in Melbourne\u2019s north is three months behind on rent and has received an eviction notice to move out by early September unless the charity can quickly repay debts through its $150,000 fundraiser.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

While serving up more than 100 meals a day to those in need during lockdown, about half a dozen staff at the High Street venue have not been paid for a month. High-profile founder Shanaka Fernando said he believed they were up to date on superannuation.<\/span><\/p>\n

It comes less than a year since Lentil as Anything raised more than $350,000 from a separate fundraiser, in part to pay back staff short-changed on wages and superannuation.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The group has been providing free meals for the homeless and gives work and other opportunities to the disadvantaged, the cost of which is normally supplemented by paying diners.<\/span><\/p>\n

But donations at the four restaurants \u2013 in Thornbury, Abbotsford, St Kilda and Newtown in Sydney \u2013 have dropped from about $93,000 a week to $5000 during lockdowns.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cPeople who enjoy Lentil and have the financial capacity to contribute beyond the cost of a meal, we don\u2019t have that resource anymore,\u201d Mr Fernando said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lentil has faced ongoing board upheaval and former chair Meg Evans resigned in May for personal reasons after only months in the role. She said Lentil as Anything was run by extraordinary people and provided an essential service.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Ms Evans had previously told\u00a0The Age<\/i>\u00a0the organisation had been in a \u201cvery awful, tricky situation\u201d with a \u201clack of expertise or capacity to meet regulatory deadlines\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

She has been replaced by new chairperson Alex Pavlotski.<\/span><\/p>\n

Its GoFundMe pitch said \u201cin light of recent negative press\u201d it had reached out to the charities\u2019 regulator \u201cto ensure we are compliant with their legislation\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are currently working closely with them on processes to make Lentil as Anything even more transparent.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Donations to the fundraiser will go towards outstanding wages, rent and supplier bills.<\/span><\/p>\n

Last year Lentil as Anything was subject to regulatory action\u00a0from both the Fair Work Ombudsman for wage underpayment and the Australian Tax Office for a large unpaid superannuation bill.<\/span><\/p>\n

It raised at least $373,000 to meet those obligations and at that time claimed that the pandemic \u201cthrew a spanner in our organisational model\u201d. But its own financial accounts from before coronavirus appeared show it was already on the brink of insolvency.<\/span><\/p>\n

There have been years of board upheaval and Mr Fernando, a former bankrupt, has been accused of serious misconduct after he allegedly used the charity for personal financial gain and misused government grants.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

The Age\u00a0<\/i>reported in May that a forensic accounting report \u2013 commissioned by a previous board \u2013 alleged that $11,279 of the registered charity\u2019s money might have been improperly used on a range of Mr Fernando\u2019s private expenses, including paying his electricity, water and gas bills and travel. Mr Fernando denied all claims and accused the former board of wanting to \u201cdenigrate\u201d him and Lentil as Anything.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cMy character is my only asset that I have and it\u2019s sad that that was attacked,\u201d he said this week.<\/span><\/p>\n

The report found that record-keeping was so poor that it was unable to determine conclusively \u201cfor or against improper or illegal conduct at Lentil\u201d. \u201cThe existence of many irregularities suggests that further investigation is necessary.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
