Sri Lanka is no stranger to this; many of the island\u2019s ancient treasures have been carried off across the seas to Britain, or to the homelands of other colonisers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">One such artefact is a gold-plated statue of the goddess Tara, who is revered in both Buddhist and Hindu beliefs. The British Museum in London is the current home of this statue, one of Sri Lanka\u2019s most special and sacred antiques.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">A Goddess Of Mercy And Compassion<\/span><\/h2>\n<figure class=\"image\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img undefined\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.roar.media\/assets\/hheAm7UoUabDlz9m_1.png?w=500\" alt=\"\" \/><figcaption><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><em>The statue of Tara at the British Museum in London. Image credit: britishmuseum.org<\/em><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Tara was venerated in Buddhism as the goddess of mercy and compassion, and one who represented both the spiritual and sensual aspects of life. Statues of Tara, like the Sri Lankan one at the British Museum, would have been used by worshippers as a focus for meditation on the qualities of mercy and compassion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">These statues are likely to have been housed in temples in Sri Lanka, and other parts of South Asia, alongside those of Tara\u2019s male counterpart, the bodhisattva\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/tricycle.org\/magazine\/avalokiteshvara-tibet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Avalokiteshvara<\/a>. Bodhisattvas are beings who reached enlightenment, or\u00a0<em>nirvana<\/em>, but turned back out of compassion, so that they can help others escape the cycle of death, rebirth and suffering.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"image\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img undefined\" style=\"width: 387px; height: 247px;\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.roar.media\/assets\/L1V8dyG5eTmUaiGx_3.jpg?w=500\" alt=\"\" \/><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>A statue of the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara at the Kushtarajagala Viharaya in Weligama. Image credit: 22weligambay.com<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Historians believe that the worshipping of Tara perhaps began around the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/himalaya.socanth.cam.ac.uk\/collections\/journals\/ancientnepal\/pdf\/ancient_nepal_100_02.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">6th century AD<\/a>. Like Avalokiteshvara, Tara was also believed to be a bodhisattva, and it was the influence of Mah\u0101y\u0101na Buddhism from India that encouraged the worshipping of bodhisattvas in Sri Lanka. It has been suggested that statues of\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/roar.media\/sinhala\/main\/identities\/tara-goddess-statue-in-london-museum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bodhisattvas<\/a>\u00a0were erected in the Anuradhapura kingdom during King Mahasen\u2019s reign. The goddess Tara is only one example of a female bodhisattva and statues of other female bodhisattvas, too, have been discovered in Sri Lanka.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">While Tara is no longer worshipped in Sri Lanka, she is\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Tara-Buddhist-goddess\">still popular<\/a>\u00a0in countries and regions such as Nepal, Tibet and Mongolia. It is believed that the goddess came into existence from a tear of Avalokiteshvara, which fell to the ground and formed a lake. A lotus flower rose up from the waters of the lake, which opened its petals to reveal the goddess. According to some Buddhist beliefs, Tara is not only a merciful and compassionate deity, but also a protector of navigation and earthly travel as well as a guide to\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.buddhistdoor.net\/features\/tara-a-powerful-feminine-force-in-the-buddhist-pantheon\">spiritual travel<\/a>\u00a0along the path to enlightenment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">A Statue To Embody Beauty And Grace<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The statue of Tara that is currently in the British Museum was cast in bronze and plated in gold. It depicts the goddess with her right hand held in a gesture known as\u00a0<em>varadamudra<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 the gesture of granting a wish, or offering blessings. While the goddess\u2019s upper body is naked up to the waist, a sarong-like garment is draped along her hips, concealing her lower body.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Although it is difficult to determine exactly when and where the statue may have been sculpted, some scholars date it back to somewhere between the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dlir.org\/archive\/orc-exhibit\/items\/browse\/collection\/10\/tag\/The+female+as+cult+object+in+Buddhism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">8th and 10th centuries<\/a>.\u00a0 It is 143cm\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britishmuseum.org\/collection\/object\/A_1830-0612-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">in height<\/a>, without its plinth, and it is believed that the statue was skillfully designed to depict what would have been perceived as the epitome of feminine beauty and grace. Cavities found on parts of the statue suggest that it was originally decorated with gems \u2014 including one large gemstone on the crown that adorns the goddess\u2019s head \u2014 which, over time, may have been lost, or perhaps stolen. Some also believe that the goddess was once depicted to be holding a lotus flower in her left hand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">This particular statue was found in the Eastern Province of Ceylon \u2014 as Sri Lanka was then known \u2014 between the years 1812 and 1822, when the country was under British rule. The Governor at the time, Robert Brownrigg, gifted the statue to the British Museum in 1830. However, it was initially never displayed and instead hidden away, the statue\u2019s nudity was considered \u201c<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/finders-keepers-on-sex-tara-the-buddhist-deity-at-the-british-museum-brownness-in-the-colonies\/\">too obscene<\/a>\u201d and therefore inappropriate for the British public at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">From Being Worshipped, To Hidden, And Finally Displayed<\/span><\/h2>\n<figure class=\"image\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img undefined\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.roar.media\/assets\/I61S2S2ySXE27uQW_Untitled.png?w=840\" alt=\"\" \/><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong><em>The statue of Tara, although now on display at the British Museum, was once hidden away in a secret storeroom, after being deemed \u201ctoo obscene\u201d for Victorian eyes. Image credit: wikimedia.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">So instead, the statue of the goddess was placed in a secret storeroom in the Museum, called\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/londonist.com\/london\/history\/the-british-museum-s-secretum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u2018the Secretum\u2019<\/a>\u00a0for around thirty years or so, along with other treasures from across the world deemed inappropriate for the Victorian public. Only highly esteemed scholars with special permits were allowed into the Secretum to study the statue of Tara and the other treasures acquired \u2014 not necessarily with the consent of the native people \u2014 from foreign lands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">It was only in 1960, more than a century after it was taken away from the land of the people that worshipped her, that the statue of Tara was finally displayed to the public. She is now a resident of\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britishmuseum.org\/collection\/galleries\/china-and-south-asia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Room 33<\/a>\u00a0at the British Museum, surrounded by artefacts from other ancient civilisations from across South Asia.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Will Tara Ever Return Home?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The statue of Tara is no doubt valuable \u2014 and not just because of its gold plating, or because of how old it is. For many people \u2014 and especially those of Buddhist and Hindu heritage \u2014 this sculpture holds tremendous cultural value.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">In the recent past, there have been myriad conversations, both online and offline, about the \u201cstolen\u201d or \u201clooted\u201d treasures being\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/nov\/04\/british-museum-is-worlds-largest-receiver-of-stolen-goods-says-qc\">displayed in the British Museum<\/a>. People from previously colonised nations have pointed out that these artefacts were forcibly taken away from their homelands, and never returned, even after countries gained Independence from British rule. Many a case has been made for why these artefacts should be returned to the countries they were taken from \u2014 including\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sundaytimes.lk\/100221\/News\/nws_47.html\">Sri Lanka<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">But are we ready to bring back and take care of something as precious as the statue of the goddess Tara?<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cThe British Museum is one place which takes good care of its artefacts,\u201d said a senior lecturer from the University of Colombo\u2019s Department of History, who wished to remain unnamed. \u201cSo if we [Sri Lanka] cannot take care of the Tara sculpture in a similar manner, then we should let it be where it is,\u201d she told\u00a0<em>Roar\u00a0<\/em>Media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u201cThere is no sense in trying to bring back the sculpture, and our other artefacts, if we do not have the facilities or the funds to do so. We will be wasting a lot of money, and right now we have a lot of issues at home, which we need to take care of. Especially the COVID-19 situation and the economic and financial issues we are going through right now.
