His parents moved to <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Singapore when they were displaced from the <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sindh province of British India during the <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cPartition of India\u201d. Mahbubani was born in <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Singapore. Supported by a President\u2019s Scholarship in 1967, he graduated from University of <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Singapore in 1971 with B.A in Philosophy and a <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">M.A in Philosophy from Dalhousie University, <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">USA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Written a few years after the fall of the Berlin <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Wall (in November 1991) and the collapse of <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the Soviet Union in a world riding on western<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">triumphalism and becoming replicas of liberal <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">democracies, Can Asians Think poses views against the tide at the <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">time. Mahbubani mentions of his personal experiences of how the <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">tolerance of dissenting views espoused by western liberal thinking <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">did not extend to the challenge of western liberalism. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The collection of essays is in four parts: The Return of Asia, The <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">West and the Rest, The Asia Pacific and Southeast Asia and Global <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Concerns.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">The first essay, \u201cCan Asians Think\u201d is an analysis of the four to five <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">hundred years prior to the West domination and Eastern subsidence<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">where a mindset was formed in the East that the West is superior. A <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">thousand years ago, the Chinese and Arabs (ie. Confucian and Islamic civilisations) had led the way in science and technology, medicine and astronomy. In the 15th century, when China was thriving,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">no one would have predicted Europe would leap ahead in the next <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">500 years, colonising the rest of the world. Mahbubani asserts that \u201cthe most painful thing that happened to Asia was not the physical <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">but the mental colonisation\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">The economic performance of the four Tiger economies (South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore) and Indonesia, Malaysia <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and Thailand along with the academic performance of the Asians has <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">given confidence to the belief that Asians can think indeed. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Author concludes that time will tell. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The collection of essays is a brilliant and a courageous analysis of the <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">world events for the past couple of millennia to the current century. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">His analysis of historical events and the economic advantages and <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">disadvantages around the world is second to none.
