\u00a0Is a favourite phrase of most Aussies when faced with some bloody ignoramus trying to teach them correct English. This famous phrase is accompanied normally by an erect middle finger, clearly pointing upward to indicate just how upset they are, shoved-up practically into the nostrils of their tutor. The tutor gives up and goes home, up and away, so to speak.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, without going upstream any further, here is a second helping of this unusual, very common, two-letter word that I would advise everyone to read.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This has been up to me to publish, and if anyone does not wish to read it, I will finish off with my “title”(up-there), as I sometimes do.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lovers of the English language might enjoy this. It is yet another example of why people learning English have trouble with the language.\u00a0 Learning the nuances of English makes it a difficult language. (But then, that’s probably true of many languages.) \u00a0\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\nThere is a two-letter word in English that perhaps\u00a0has more meanings than any other two-letter word,<\/i><\/b>\u00a0and that word is\u00a0‘UP<\/span>.’<\/u>\u00a0 It is listed in the dictionary as being used as an [adv], [prep], [adj],\u00a0[n] or [v].<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

It’s easy to understand\u00a0UP<\/span><\/u>, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning,\u00a0why do we wake\u00a0UP<\/u><\/span>?
\nAt a meeting, why do topics come\u00a0UP<\/u><\/span>\u00a0?\u00a0Why do we speak\u00a0UP<\/u><\/span>, and why are the officers\u00a0UP<\/u><\/span><\/i>\u00a0for election<\/i>\u00a0<\/i>and why is it\u00a0UP<\/span><\/u>\u00a0to the secretary to write<\/i>\u00a0UP<\/u><\/span>\u00a0a report? We call\u00a0UP<\/span><\/u>\u00a0our friends and we use it to brighten\u00a0UP<\/u><\/span><\/i>\u00a0a room,\u00a0polish\u00a0UP<\/u><\/span>\u00a0the silver, we warm\u00a0UP<\/u><\/span><\/i>\u00a0the leftovers<\/i>\u00a0and clean\u00a0UP<\/span><\/u>\u00a0the kitchen. We lock\u00a0UP<\/u><\/span><\/i>\u00a0the house and some guys fix<\/i>\u00a0UP<\/span>\u00a0<\/u>the old car.\u00a0<\/i><\/span><\/strong>
\nAt other times the little word has a real special meaning. People stir\u00a0UP<\/u><\/span>\u00a0trouble, line\u00a0UP<\/span><\/u>\u00a0for tickets, work\u00a0UP<\/u><\/span>\u00a0an appetite, and think\u00a0UP<\/u><\/span><\/i>\u00a0excuses.<\/i><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed\u00a0UP<\/u>\u00a0<\/span>is special.<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

And this\u00a0up<\/u>\u00a0is confusing:
\nA drain must be opened\u00a0UP<\/u><\/span><\/i>\u00a0because it is stopped\u00a0\u00a0UP<\/span>.<\/u><\/i><\/i><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

We open\u00a0UP<\/u><\/i><\/span>\u00a0a store in the morning but we close it\u00a0UP<\/u><\/span>\u00a0at night.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0We seem to be pretty mixed\u00a0UP<\/span>\u00a0<\/u>about\u00a0UP<\/u><\/span>\u00a0!<\/i><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of\u00a0UP<\/u><\/span>\u00a0, look the word\u00a0UP<\/u><\/span>\u00a0in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes\u00a0<\/i>\u00a0UP<\/u><\/i><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>almost 1\/4 of the page\u00a0and can add\u00a0\u00a0UP<\/span><\/u>\u00a0to about thirty definitions<\/i><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

If you are\u00a0UP\u00a0to it, you might try building\u00a0UP<\/u><\/span><\/i>\u00a0a list of the many ways<\/i>\u00a0UP<\/u><\/i><\/span>\u00a0is used.\u00a0It will take<\/i>\u00a0UP<\/u><\/span>\u00a0<\/i>a lot of your time,<\/i>\u00a0<\/i>but if you don’t give<\/i>\u00a0<\/span>UP<\/u><\/span>, you may wind\u00a0UP<\/u><\/span>\u00a0with a hundred or more.<\/i><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding\u00a0UP<\/u><\/span>\u00a0. When the sun comes out we say it is clearing\u00a0UP<\/u><\/span>. When it rains, it wets\u00a0UP<\/u><\/span>\u00a0the earth. When it does not\u00a0rain for awhile, things dry\u00a0<\/span>UP<\/span>.<\/u><\/i>\u00a0<\/i><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

One could go on & on, but I’ll wrap<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

it UP<\/u><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>, for\u00a0now<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

.……my time is\u00a0UP<\/u><\/span>\u00a0, so time to shut\u00a0UP<\/u><\/span>!\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n
