NADAGAMKARAYO – by Capt Elmo Jayawardena<\/span><\/h1>\n

\"NADAGAMKARAYO<\/p>\n

Some days ago a fellow Captain dropped in to see us at home. He was <\/span>accompanied by his wife. Amidst the light conversation and pleasant chatter they <\/span>mentioned NADAGAMKARAYO. Swore it was a great teledrama and that we <\/span>should give a go at it. I have never watched teledramas simply because I don\u2019t <\/span>have the time to sit in front of a TV. The same goes for my wife, ultra-busy with <\/span>our own dramas in life. Somehow the next day we got a break from a tight <\/span>timetable and went to YouTube and watched Episode 1 of Nadagamkarayo. Then <\/span>we watched Episode 2 and then 3 and 4 and 5. <\/span><\/p>\n

Now after two weeks we are at Episode 184 and well set on Nadagamkarayo to <\/span>light-up our evenings.<\/span><\/p>\n

I called a dear friend. I know his taste. By profession he is the Head Honcho of a <\/span>prominent bank. But he\u2019s still got grass-root vernacular taste, yes, from Spielberg <\/span>masterpieces to Indika Ferdinando\u2019s \u2018Ho Gaana Pokuna\u2019. The bank boss has not <\/span>been a tele-drama man. The next day he texted me \u201cThank you for the gift my <\/span>friend, the program is great, I am hooked on Nadagamkarayo.\u201d A few days later <\/span>he emails me that he is on Episode 58. I called another friend, a leading corporate <\/span>lawyer married to an ultra-busy surgeon. They have three young children, and the <\/span>lawyer is a multi-tasker from the \u2018A\u2019 Team. She too has taken the Nadagamkarayo <\/span>drug and was watching the tele-drama at 8 in the morning, the only interval in her <\/span>roller-coaster daily schedule.<\/span><\/p>\n

So, what is this hype all about Nadagamkarayo? It certainly is no quick fix for <\/span>lockdown blues. It is much more. Pure Sri Lankan simple story with excellent <\/span>creativity. The cast bar none is acting at Sarasavi or Sumathi level. Kawadiya who <\/span>has traces of Dustin Hoffman gets the Oscar nomination and Kukul Bada the <\/span>young domestic deserves an honourable mention purely for his varying facial<\/span>
\nexpressions. The totality created by director Sivagurunathan is amazingly <\/span>watchable.<\/span><\/p>\n

The insatiable appetite of the TV audience to watch \u2018Nadagamkarayo\u2019 stems from <\/span>the clever way the drama rolls on, keeping all characters alive and active. If this is <\/span>watched by anyone as a \u2018Daily Bread\u2019 at 9.30 in the night, that is fine, so long as <\/span>you have that half-hour free to sit in front of your TV. But like us, if you are a late <\/span>starter and going through the episodes to catch up with the current stage, then <\/span>you are in trouble. Watch one and then go to the next and the next and the next <\/span>in an unstoppable frenzy and the wake-up call comes when you hear the clock <\/span>striking mid-night. That is how strong the addiction could be.<\/span><\/p>\n

I do not know who the script writer is or the brilliant cinematographer who is <\/span>responsible for depicting rural scenery of high pastoral quality. There will be so <\/span>many others who added their smidgen to make this a first-class entertainment to <\/span>all and sundry. They say cocaine, LSD and pure Kerala ganja are addictive? Try <\/span>Nadagamkarayo, you get bewildered from episode to episode which is hard to <\/span>switch off until you watch the entire story.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kukula Mudalali seems a veteran from either stage or screen. Bald as a doorknob <\/span>and with a \u2018Taras Bulba\u2019 moustache he is the perfect all-round villain for the <\/span>drama. Not only is he a thug selling moonshine but a failed Romeo with any skirt <\/span>that swings in the wind. Manamalan driving his red imitation Ferrari is difficult to <\/span>define from the audience point of view. He is brash and bawdy and is always the <\/span>ultimate liar. That is his role, and he sure brings a different dimension to the <\/span>bucolic village setting with his patch-work denims and action-filled behavior <\/span>which has the unique distinction of being pleasing and annoying at the same time. <\/span>This is what we traded for Netflix and HBO. At the start it was curiosity, but in no <\/span>time Nadagamkarayo became an addiction.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"NADAGAMKARAYO
\nWe have not seen the evening television news for weeks. No, we missed nothing. <\/span>We do not want to know who stole the garlic and created the Sudu Loonu scandal <\/span>or who hid the paddy. Pandora\u2019s Box and how Uhuru Kenyatta and Vladimir Putin <\/span>looked for reliable laundries to clean their money is way above what we need to <\/span>know. The same goes for those who bid for a Cypriot passport at 1.3 million <\/span>dollars. We do not want to know how 600 plus items were blacklisted for <\/span>importing and then in a flash a new magician came on stage like Gorgia Pasha and <\/span>swung his multi-colored wand and Ooppss – the restrictions vanished into thin air. <\/span>No more dollar-saving cutbacks. We can be clad in St Michael\u2019s underwear and <\/span>feast on Cadbury chocolates stocked in a brand new two-door refrigerator that <\/span>has been imported from Germany. No, I certainly do not need all that twisted<\/span>
\njargon camouflaged as news to crowd my evening by watching Derana, Sirasa or <\/span>Hiru TV. Maybe it is not the fault of these stations but the politically- dominated <\/span>mundane news that is available or \u2018has to be\u2019 shown by order. I will gladly trade <\/span>all that to see Loku Hamuduruwo on Nadagamkarayo screen with his serene <\/span>behavior and exemplary attitude to life which soothes our very souls. At all times <\/span>the soft words of Loku Hamuduruwo are always a simple wisdom-filled lesson in <\/span>life to all of us.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cap it up with the daily occurrences at the tea kiosk by the paddy field where the <\/span>shop owner, manager, and tea-maker Mudalali and his golaya Gajaman colour the <\/span>show. His customers are the banana-eating and kahata-drinking clan who spice <\/span>the story with palatable \u2018Gamey Talk\u2019 . The champion of this mini-stage is Sirisena <\/span>the erudite goat-milk-seller who has his own interpretations and anecdotes to <\/span>anything and everything political that happens in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sudu Chooti comes to the story as a village Juliet. She is the daughter of the Music <\/span>Master and his comely wife Kusumalatha who is \u2018all perfect\u2019 in her role as a village <\/span>mother. Here the village damsel Sudu Chooti falls in love with the Kassippu-selling <\/span>Sara the scourge of the village. No doubt, Sara carries the show wrapped in a <\/span>rugged flamboyance which is nothing but raw talent. He sure is the ultimate <\/span>\u2018Village Hampden\u2019 from Gray\u2019s Elegy, a rebel against constant village tyranny. He <\/span>and his Kassippu boys, Kawadiya, Suddha and Kiri Putha depict clearly to the <\/span>audience the sadness of the youth today. The poverty that plagues their young <\/span>lives with no answers visible to make a decent living is an unchangeable tragedy. <\/span>They are outcasts in the village and are branded for life with no avenue for <\/span>redemption. That part of Nadagamkarayo is a lesson to us all. The underlying <\/span>message is clear; It is not the core of the man that is rotting, it is the system that <\/span>denies him the opportunity. Where and when is the brighter day that would give <\/span>him a chance to wake up and make attempts to be a decent human being?<\/span><\/p>\n

\"NADAGAMKARAYO<\/p>\n

Rasika is poor, her husband has left her, and run off with another woman. Rasika <\/span>is the single parent taking care of an innocent little daughter. They live in a hovel <\/span>that is called home. Her father is sick, a heart patient, and the mother is <\/span>unemployed. The day that dawns for them is always a struggle. <\/span>A stranger is kind to her. Gives Rasika a lift to visit her father in hospital and brings <\/span>her home. She invites him for a cup of tea. He is reluctant and hesitates.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEven though we are poor we can afford to give you a cup of tea,\u201d she tells the<\/span>
\nstranger.<\/span>
\nThat line says it all. It defines the soul of Sri Lanka and what is Sri Lankan.<\/span>
\nWhere would we be without it?<\/span><\/p>\n
