On the contrary, he knew where he was going; he was on his way to a fresh adventure, to his first job, as an Assistant Master at Trinity\u201d.<\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-77151 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Uthsara-Dissanayake.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"202\" height=\"209\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">When\u00a0Major Gordon Burrows and Trinity crossed paths\u00a0in\u00a01946,\u00a0Trinity\u00a0was undergoing many\u00a0major reformations\u00a0and changes,\u00a0such as\u00a0the\u00a0Church Missionary Society\u00a0deciding to\u00a0hand\u00a0over\u00a0control of the\u00a0School to an independent Board of Governors in 1940,\u00a0the appointment of\u202f Mr\u00a0C.E.\u00a0Simithraaratchy\u00a0the\u00a0first\u00a0Ceylonese\u00a0and Old\u00a0Boy\u00a0as Principal, and the\u00a0construction of the new\u00a0College\u00a0Hall,\u00a0(which was gifted by\u00a0AHT de\u00a0Soysa,\u00a0an\u00a0Old\u00a0Boy)\u00a0to replace the Old Hall which was demolished\u00a0to make way for the new Hall.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Early Life<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">G.A.E Burrows was born on 20th February 1915 in Forest Hill, South London, where his father was curate at the local Presbyterian Church. He was the second of four children \u2013\u00a02 boys and 2 girls. When he was studying for the Ministry to be a Priest,\u00a0War broke out and he joined the British Army as an Intelligence officer in\u00a0the Royal Intelligence Corps.\u00a0During the period of the Second World War, the\u00a0South East Asia Command (SEAC) was created by the Allies in August 1943 and\u00a0was\u00a0based in Delhi.\u00a0Major Gordon Burrows served\u00a0in\u00a0Lord Louis Mountbatten\u2019s staff as an Intelligence officer after the\u00a0SEAC\u00a0headquarters moved in April 1944 to Peradeniya Gardens in Ceylon. \u00a0He\u00a0rose\u00a0to the\u00a0position\u00a0of\u00a0Chief\u00a0Intelligence\u00a0Officer\u00a0to\u00a0Lord Louis Mountbatten. The SEAC at the time was a crucial command post for the co-ordination of most\u00a0defenses\u00a0of allied forces.\u00a0Also,\u00a0the recapture of Burma\u00a0by England\u00a0was\u00a0coordinated\u00a0by the SEAC.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">During his time at SEAC, Major Gordon Burrows went to\u00a0Church on Sundays at St Paul\u2019s, Kandy. There he got to know members of the local community, some of whom became lifelong friends. This proved seminal, for it was one of them who suggested to him, after the war had ended, that he consider staying in Kandy,\u00a0becoming a\u00a0school-teacher.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">He was an Intelligence officer, a\u00a0Teacher, a\u00a0Housemaster and finally\u00a0Co-Vice\u00a0Principal\u00a0at\u00a0Trinity College.\u00a0He had\u00a0also\u00a0risen through the ranks during the\u00a0World\u00a0War\u00a0II\u00a0to become\u00a0a Major. After the war ended,\u00a0Major Gordon Burrows stayed in Ceylon as it was\u00a0then\u00a0known.\u00a0He\u00a0fell in love with the beauty of the island amidst all chaos in the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Playing the piano at the College hall<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Whilst he was an army officer,\u00a0he\u00a0once\u00a0played the piano as part of a recital at the\u00a0College\u00a0Hall,\u00a0for\u00a0he was\u00a0a concert-quality pianist.\u00a0Here he met Mr.\u00a0Simitharachchy\u00a0with\u00a0whom he was acquainted. After being\u00a0invited\u00a0to spend another year in Ceylon,\u00a0in 1946\u00a0he\u00a0agreed\u00a0to\u00a0stay working as a Latin teacher at\u00a0College.\u00a0He\u00a0returned to\u00a0England in 1947 to\u00a0consider whether\u00a0his decision\u00a0was\u00a0not spontaneous and what he really wanted to do\u00a0with\u00a0his life, whether\u00a0to teach in Ceylon, or not.\u00a0Yet,\u00a0Trinity\u00a0had\u00a0got\u00a0under his skin in that\u00a0brief\u00a0period\u00a0of time\u00a0and so,\u00a0having given serious thought to\u00a0being\u00a0lured\u00a0by the burning hot sun, the golden\u00a0beaches,\u00a0and the bright moon,\u00a0in all of which he never lost his delight,\u00a0Maj.\u00a0Gordon Burrows returned to Trinity\u00a0in 1949\u00a0as Co-Vice Principal,\u00a0taking up\u00a0residence within the school premises.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">A natural born teacher<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">For fourteen more years he\u00a0laboured\u00a0here at\u00a0College\u00a0educating\u00a0young\u00a0Trinitians\u00a0in Latin and English,\u00a0and being\u00a0the\u00a0natural\u00a0born teacher\u00a0he\u00a0was,\u00a0Mr.\u00a0Burrows (as addressed at the time) enjoyed teaching as did his students have the same enjoyment of learning. Mr.\u00a0Burrows did not waste a moment of the boys\u2019\u00a0constant pursuit of curiosity\u00a0and\u00a0was remarkable in inspiring others with his own enthusiasm. While his methods of teaching were\u00a0unorthodox,\u00a0to say the least,\u00a0his results were always spectacular.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-1 is-cropped\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\">\n<li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\">\n<figure><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-12668\" src=\"https:\/\/www.trinitycollege.lk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/trinity-college-kandy_Gordon-Burrows-1.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 809px) 100vw, 809px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.trinitycollege.lk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/trinity-college-kandy_Gordon-Burrows-1.jpg 809w, https:\/\/www.trinitycollege.lk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/trinity-college-kandy_Gordon-Burrows-1-300x285.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.trinitycollege.lk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/trinity-college-kandy_Gordon-Burrows-1-768x729.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.trinitycollege.lk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/trinity-college-kandy_Gordon-Burrows-1-197x187.jpg 197w\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"12668\" \/><\/span><figcaption class=\"blocks-gallery-item__caption\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Gordon Burrows at a Desk<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">At times when the boys did well in his lessons of Latin,\u00a0they\u00a0were taken by\u00a0Mr.\u00a0Burrows to the swimming pool in what was then\u00a0called the King\u2019s Pavilion,\u00a0today the\u00a0Kandy President\u2019s House. It was\u00a0the\u00a0Kandy Residence of Ceylon\u2019s Governor, Lord\u00a0Soulbury. This was\u00a0possible\u00a0due to the special relationship that\u00a0Mr.\u00a0Gordon Burrows had\u00a0with the British\u00a0Administration.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Mrs Pat<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Mr.\u00a0Burrows had been here four years when he went off\u00a0home\u00a0on his first holiday.\u00a0Although he returned single, a few were let into the secret that he was soon flying back to get married. Trinity waited in\u00a0trepidation\u00a0\u2026.\u00a0but none need have worried. When he\u00a0went on\u00a0furlough\u00a0from\u00a0College\u00a0to return to the United Kingdom,\u00a0the best thing that\u00a0Mr.\u00a0Burrows ever did for himself was to get married. They were married on 3rd\u00a0September 1954 in Ballymoney, Northern Ireland at the Presbyterian Church there, and soon after arriving in England they sailed by ship for their honeymoon, a\u00a0two-week\u00a0voyage, from Southampton to Colombo.\u00a0He\u00a0returned with the\u00a0demure\u201dMrs.\u00a0Pat\u201d (as she was known to the boys) as his bride,\u00a0and\u00a0he also received\u00a0his appointment as the House Master of Alison House.\u00a0Mr.\u00a0Burrows along with\u00a0Mrs.\u00a0Pat were extremely good towards the boys\u00a0and looked after the\u00a0Alisonians\u00a0very\u00a0well.\u00a0\u201cMrs.\u00a0Pat\u201d\u00a0was a foster mother to all the\u00a0Alisonians\u00a0as remembered by those who had the privilege of growing up under the care of Mr. &amp;\u00a0Mrs.\u00a0Burrows.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">For with the continuation of teaching at College,\u00a0Mr\u00a0Burrows was successful in raising a family of his own on this little island which he so adored.\u00a0 In fact, they\u00a0gave a Ceylonese name to each of their<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>children,\u00a0their\u00a0two sons being named Peter Ananda and Michael Rohan and the daughter being named Alison\u00a0Sriyani.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Many\u00a0were the\u00a0eventful days for\u00a0Mr\u00a0Burrows and his\u00a0family .\u00a0One such was recalled by an old boy\u00a0of\u00a0the time,\u00a0Mr\u00a0Sriyantha\u00a0Simon\u00a0Senaratna.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><em>\u201cI recall an incident when I was a senior\u00a0Alisonian\u00a0and a\u00a0Prefect\u00a0of\u00a0\u00a0the\u00a0House. Peter as a little child,\u00a0got\u00a0onto the ledge\u00a0of the\u00a0Alison\u00a0building\u00a0and\u00a0started\u00a0walking along the ledge to our and Mr. &amp; Mrs. Burrows\u2019\u00a0absolute horror. We were at the bottom holding sheets to catch him if he\u00a0fell,\u00a0but\u00a0thank God he reached the railing and safety\u201d.<\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Major Burrows and the Choir<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">If Mr.\u00a0Burrows brought freshness to the classroom, to the Choir he brought dedication\u00a0and\u00a0a true sense of its real role in worship in\u00a0the Chapel. Gone were the days when they were a group of shanghaied singers,\u00a0partly due to a lengthy period of absence of leadership following\u00a0Ms.Valesca\u00a0Reimann\u2019s departure from school in 1940.\u00a0Maj Burrows\u00a0instead\u00a0made the boys\u00a0into\u00a0a\u00a0disciplined\u00a0\u00a0group\u00a0of singers who sang\u00a0because they enjoyed it,\u00a0were\u00a0conscious of their responsibilities\u00a0and were\u00a0willing to practice the long and arduous hours that Mr.\u00a0Burrows demanded\u00a0so as\u00a0to reach that pitch of\u00a0perfection\u00a0 he\u00a0insisted on.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">On 1st\u00a0December,\u00a01950,\u00a0the<em>\u202fBBC<\/em>\u00a0World Service\u00a0broadcast\u202fTrinity\u2019s\u00a0<em>Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols<\/em>\u202fto\u00a0the world\u00a0on the \u201cWorld Service\u201d\u00a0as part of its Christmas\u00a0Programme.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">\u00a0The Chapel\u00a0would\u00a0come alive\u00a0on the day of the\u00a0Carol Service,\u00a0carefully\u00a0and beautifully\u00a0lit\u00a0up\u00a0and filled with students,\u00a0parents,\u00a0past\u00a0pupils\u00a0and staff.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Under his care the Carol Service became the\u00a0much loved\u00a0occasion that it is today, but to him it was only one of many services throughout the year for which the Choir practiced hard and regularly. And so,\u00a0a chorister of his,\u00a0Maj. Richard Hermon said\u202f \u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><em>\u201cFor\u00a0my\u00a0part, my memories of the choir are plentiful and\u00a0happy !!\u00a0I joined the choir solely to cut Prep on Thursdays,\u00a0as that was when choir practice was held.\u00a0I remember the\u00a0trips to S Thomas\u2019 College,\u00a0Mt Lavinia\u00a0where we stayed when we participated in the festival of Choral Music at Royal\u00a0College.\u00a0On Sunday,\u00a0the\u00a0Trinity\u00a0and\u00a0Thomian\u00a0Choirs both sang at the\u00a0Sunday Service at the\u00a0Thomian\u00a0Chapel,\u00a0where Rev Boyer Yin was the\u00a0Chaplain and Choir\u00a0Master\u201d.<\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">One year they rendered\u00a0the\u00a0\u00a0magnificent\u00a0six part\u00a0work \u2018Hosanna to the son of David\u2019 by Thomas\u00a0Weelkes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-1 is-cropped\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\">\n<li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\">\n<figure><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-12667\" src=\"https:\/\/www.trinitycollege.lk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/trinity-college-kandy_gordon-burrows-choir.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.trinitycollege.lk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/trinity-college-kandy_gordon-burrows-choir.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.trinitycollege.lk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/trinity-college-kandy_gordon-burrows-choir-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.trinitycollege.lk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/trinity-college-kandy_gordon-burrows-choir-768x514.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.trinitycollege.lk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/trinity-college-kandy_gordon-burrows-choir-280x187.jpg 280w\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"12667\" \/><\/span><figcaption class=\"blocks-gallery-item__caption\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Gordon Burrows with the Trinity College Choir \u2013 1954<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">For being a wonderful musician and having played voluntaries at Chapel before and after each service,\u00a0mainly the music of his\u00a0favourite\u00a0composer Bach,\u00a0he had quite the affinity for rugger as well,\u00a0as mentioned by\u00a0Mr\u00a0Errol Fernando.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><em>\u201cThe day Major Burrows twisted his ankle playing rugger and was unable to play the hymn in Chapel,\u00a0he handed me a copy of his English Hymnal and asked me to play at Chapel the next morning.\u00a0The hymn was \u201cSoldiers of Christ, arise\u201d \u2013\u00a0Hymn\u00a0\u00a0number\u00a0479!<\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><em>I was about 15 years old and I wasn\u2019t just nervous, I was absolutely petrified! I probably didn\u2019t sleep much that night.<\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><em>The next\u00a0morning\u00a0I arrived at Chapel like a man about to be executed. I somehow managed to get through my ordeal and my\u00a0<\/em><em>version of the story is that the keys of the piano were awash with my sweat!<\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><em>As soon as Chapel was\u00a0over\u00a0I went up to Major Burrows thinking that I never wanted to put myself through that torture ever again. However, when I handed the hymn book to\u00a0him\u00a0he refused to accept it. All he said was,<\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><em>\u201cKeep the book, Errol. I want you to play in Chapel from now on!\u00a0<\/em>\u201c<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Mr.\u00a0Burrows,\u00a0prior to\u00a0taking the Trinity College Choir to its position of eminence,\u00a0was the Choir Master at St. Paul\u2019s College which was then adjacent to the more familiar St. Paul\u2019s\u00a0Church.\u00a0That\u00a0School was unique in that it was on land literally\u00a0adjacent to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri\u00a0Dalada\u00a0Maligawa) and remained so until\u00a0the\u00a0School\u00a0was\u00a0moved\u00a0\u00a0away\u00a0later\u00a0in the\u00a0twentieth century.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The success that he achieved in the spheres of teaching and music is primarily a tribute to his powers of inspiration. This\u00a0stood him in good stead in the many roles that he was called upon\u00a0to play, whether it be\u00a0organising\u00a0Social Service activities, teaching\u00a0younger\u00a0boys rugger or dealing with the hundred and one problems attendant on his being in charge of the Boarding House as a whole.\u00a0He was always\u00a0available\u00a0in the performance of his duties,\u00a0and\u00a0to all who sought his help. As he was always willing to give hours of patient listening to anyone whether it be a student, a member of staff or a school\u00a0labourer,\u00a0he was equally at home in the Vice\u00a0Regal Lodge in New Delhi, as he would be, for example, attending the wedding of a\u00a0labourer\u00a0of the school.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Mr.\u00a0Burrows had significant influence in the (British-controlled) agency houses in Colombo,\u00a0an extensive network of friends in the administrative service\u00a0and in the plantation and\u00a0mercantile sectors. His connections made a difference to\u00a0Trinitians. When\u00a0the time came for students to secure jobs,\u00a0Mr.\u00a0Burrows was able to open doors for them to make their way to\u00a0job opportunities.\u00a0His choices of those\u00a0recommended\u00a0were, to the best of\u00a0our\u00a0knowledge,\u00a0very\u00a0good and none of them betrayed his faith in\u00a0them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Life after Trinity<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Mr. Burrows left his teaching at\u00a0Trinity College\u00a0after seventeen years in 1963 with a heavy heart. He had a genuine love of Sri Lanka and its peoples, and was proud to\u00a0possess\u00a0Honorary Citizenship of Ceylon. The government\u2019s plan to abolish English-stream\u00a0in schools led to him and\u00a0\u201cMrs.\u00a0Pat\u201d\u00a0having\u00a0to take their three children, Peter Ananda, Michael\u00a0Rohan\u00a0and Alison\u00a0Sriyani,\u00a0back\u00a0\u00a0to\u00a0the UK for their education.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">In preparation for this upheaval, he sought suitable employment when on leave in the UK in 1961. Teaching was the obvious choice, and he had toured many well-known English schools previously,\u00a0while on\u00a0a British Council-sponsored information gathering exercise, which may or may not have informed the direction of travel at Trinity in some ways. However, he met a man called Harry Holland in 1961 who was setting up a new\u00a0organization\u00a0in England to run courses preparing Europeans for overseas\u00a0work. Harry was an eye surgeon in Peshawar\u00a0(Pakistan), as his father had been too, carrying out thousands of\u00a0cataract\u00a0operations over the years on people from\u00a0far and wide\u00a0and transforming lives. He was a man with a mission, but he had been horrified at the lack of knowledge of Europeans arriving to work in Pakistan and Asia about culture,\u00a0history\u00a0and political background. How could\u00a0one\u00a0work in a country without this understanding and appreciation, and let it be said, respect for local peoples? He\u00a0was\u00a0determined to set up a briefing\u00a0centre\u00a0in England. This was the Overseas Service College, which later became the Centre for International Briefing, based at Farnham\u00a0Castle in Surrey.\u00a0Many were the\u00a0Trinitians\u00a0who visited him at Farnham Castle.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Gordon Burrows and his family had a very happy time at the Castle.\u202f It was ideal for Mr.\u00a0Burrows, especially as it meant he was able to tour Asia widely every two or three years to keep up to date with contacts and see first-hand what was happening from Pakistan to Indonesia, Thailand to Fiji.\u202f Sri Lanka was always a central stop.\u202fIn 1966 he was delighted to gain a rare visa to visit\u00a0China, then\u00a0under\u00a0Chairman\u00a0Mao\u2019s leadership, where any\u00a0small group of visitors were shepherded carefully throughout\u00a0their\u00a0visit.<strong>\u202f<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">GAEB\u2019s postcards home, which he knew would have to pass the censor\u2019s eyes first, were\u00a0masterly\u00a0to those\u00a0who were\u00a0able to read between the lines.\u202f All his\u00a0postcards got through unchanged.\u202f He also made his first visit to Japan. He said he had not enjoyed it.\u202f Doubtless, his experience was\u00a0coloured\u00a0by war and his SEAC days in Kandy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">A\u00a0certain cricket team\u00a0was\u00a0touring the UK in 1983.This\u00a0sparked\u00a0off\u00a0a lot of interest amongst the\u00a0Old\u00a0Boys living there.\u00a0\u00a0On\u00a0a\u00a0\u00a0suggestion\u00a0made by Major Burrows, a collective decision was taken to set up an\u00a0Old\u00a0Boys\u2019 Association\u00a0in England. Major Burrows agreed to be the\u00a0first\u00a0Chairman and the TCK OBA (UK) was thus born in 1984.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">In other areas post-TCK,\u00a0alongside his work, he served as a\u00a0Governor of a local primary school for a few years, kept in constant touch with\u00a0Trinity College\u00a0and\u00a0its\u00a0former pupils, writing countless references as they moved from studies to jobs in various continents, and continued his music, enjoying singing in the local parish church choir each week, having a pint of beer after choir practice, and always playing the piano at home, especially J S Bach.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">He died peacefully on 21 December 1990 aged 75, in his bed at home in Farnham, having had cancer. He had refused all hospital treatment\u00a0in order to\u00a0be at home, where Mrs.\u00a0Pat cared unstintingly for him. In the weeks before he died, he spent hours on the telephone, contacting and saying good bye to all his many friends around the world, in conversations full of warmth, laughter and shared recollections.
