The sport of\u202f<\/span><\/span>cricket<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u202fhas a\u202fwell\u00a0known<\/i>\u202fhistory beginning in the late 16th century. Having originated in south-east England, it became the country’s national sport in the 18th century and has developed globally in the 19th and 20th centuries. International matches have been played since\u00a01844\u00a0,then\u202f<\/span><\/span>Test\u00a0cricket<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u202fbegan, retrospectively recognized, in 1877. Cricket is the world’s second most popular spectator sport after\u202f<\/span><\/span>association\u00a0football<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u202f<\/span><\/span>(soccer).The\u00a0total\u00a0Governance is by the\u202f<\/span><\/span>International Cricket Council<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u202f(ICC) which has over one hundred countries and territories in membership although only twelve\u00a0countries\u00a0currently play Test\u00a0cricket,the\u00a0latest additions being Ireland and\u00a0Afghanistan ,also\u00a0governed by the ICC.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Cricket as begun by the English still remains a sport where the language in use is of course\u00a0English.Countries\u00a0like England, Australia, South\u00a0Africa,West\u00a0Indies,Zimbabwe( formerly Rhodesia) had no problem with the English\u00a0vernacular where everything connected to the game was in English .Lately with the advent of Asian countries viz India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh the players ,administrators had to be\u00a0versed\u00a0in English jargon which most did up to the end of the 1990\u00a0decade.All\u00a0our past cricketers were able to converse well in the English which was the accepted language at Test matches particularly for speaking at post- match presentations when one who is adjudicated as \u201cthe Player of the Match\u201d had to answer to questions posed by the presenter at the podium. From the beginning of the 2000\u00a0decade\u00a0it has been noticed that some players from the Asian countries Pakistan and Sri Lanka\u00a0in particular are\u00a0not equipped to answer to questions posed at the\u00a0podium.Either\u00a0they make horrible grammatical errors or they need an\u00a0interpreter ,\u00a0 another player or an official for this purpose. It is time the administrators to take stringent measures to train the players who\u00a0represent\u00a0their countries to be\u00a0conversant\u00a0in the English language as the game\u00a0essentially is\u00a0English based from the late 18<\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/sup><\/span>\u00a0century.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

With the ICC conducted T 20 WC in progress some Sri Lanka novice players who contributed to the success of our team spoke well on the\u00a0podium.Tha\u00a0manner Charith\u00a0Asalanka\u00a0spoke after been adjudicated as the \u2018Player of the Match\u2019 against Bangladesh spoke very\u00a0fluently.Also\u00a0the words expressed by\u00a0Wanindu\u00a0Hasaranga\u00a0de Silva also on the podium after a match was too\u00a0impressive.It\u00a0should\u00a0said\u00a0about\u00a0Bhanuka\u00a0Rajapalsa\u00a0who spoke in both languages at a post-match\u00a0media conference was too impressive.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In is however prudent to mention about our own Test players in the 1990 decade like\u00a0Aravinda,Arjuna,Marvan,\u00a0Gurusinghe,\u00a0Mahanama\u00a0,Madugalle,Sanga,Mahela\u00a0etc\u00a0who were well eloquent in the English vernacular equal to the counterparts in western\u00a0countries.It\u00a0is pertinent to mention the efforts of Madugalle and\u00a0Mahanama\u00a0been\u00a0elected\u00a0as Match referees in the ICC elite panel did bring\u00a0laurels\u00a0to\u00a0motherland. The\u00a0former is now the Chief Match Referee of the ICC.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In the contrary there had been proven instances when some cricketers were awfully scared in speaking at the\u00a0podium. Once\u00a0our legendary Sanath Jayasuriya when asked who are the bowlers feared\u00a0most\u00a0he had said none but is\u00a0awfully scared\u00a0when the commentator Tony Grieg comes towards him with the\u00a0mike.In\u00a0another instance our Elite umpire in the ICC panel of umpires Kumara Dharmasena in his playing days as an off spinner under Arjuna Ranatunga, after taking three wickets had asked him \u201cenough know\u2019 as he did not want to be adjudicated as the \u201cplayer of the match\u201d which would entail him to speak in the podium.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In this context the authorities of the Sri Lanka Cricket should train the cricketers to speak in English which is vital for any Test ,ODI or T 20\u00a0cricketer.It\u00a0is learned that there are enough past cricketers who are now full time coaches having had Level two coaching qualifications running cricket schools also competent enough to teach a bit of English with cricket terms to those who are weak in spoken\u00a0English.When\u00a0women cricket is considered majority cannot converse in\u00a0English.The\u00a0legendary woman cricketer Shashikala Siriwardena who bid farewell at the conclusion of the final league match against Bangladesh in the recently concluded Women ICC world cup in Australia, after been named as the \u201cPlayer of the Match\u201d brought\u00a0laurels\u00a0to motherland speaking at the podium answering questions posed by the experienced commentator Allen\u00a0Wilkins. She\u00a0spoke so confidently in eloquent English which\u00a0perhaps was\u00a0one of the best speeches\u00a0made.In\u00a0fact she with her husband Namal Seneviratne is running a cricket training school where she is a level two coach in the SLC.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In the context of the above it is time when cricket resumes the SLC to take the above facts into dire consideration to make Sri Lanka\u00a0proud\u00a0 sans\u00a0any\u00a0blemish,as\u00a0when our cricketers speak good English on the podium for the world to hear.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
