Decease had already taken its toll on him. He was actually aware that as we learnt in school, \u201cTo every man upon the earth\/death cometh soon or late\u201d. He, who possessed an effervescent personality, initially stood tall on the modest unsophisticated Lumbini Theatre in the early 1960\u2019s. He had confessed many times as a much-adored artiste that his heart lies in theatre. Henry Jayasena could be easily and definitely classified as one, alongside amongst the elite of eminent literary figures in the annals of theatre in Sri Lanka, like Professor\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Ediriweera<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Sarathchandra<\/span><\/span>,\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Sugathapala<\/span><\/span>\u00a0De Silva, Dayananda Gunawardena, Dr Lionel\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Algama,Premasiri<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Khemadasa<\/span><\/span>\u00a0etc.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

His numerous\u00a0contributions\u00a0to the theatre and cinema spanned\u00a0for\u00a0almost 4 decades. He retired from his acting career in the year 1999 while he was under treatment for\u00a0the acquired dreaded\u00a0colon cancer. The entire treatment process took around one and a half years. On his personal experience and suffering he had written\u00a0in detail\u00a0a book titled \u201cBalha\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Gilano<\/span><\/span>\u00a0\u2013 the story of a cancer patient\u201d purely to educate the masses.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\"Homage<\/span><\/span>However, he lived for a further 10 years leading a normal life during which time he revived his famous drama\u00a0 \u2018<\/span><\/span>Hunuwataye<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Kathawa<\/span><\/span>\u2019 an adoption of Bertolt Brecht\u2019s \u2018The Caucasian Chalk Circle\u2019 by deploying experienced and talented new actors along with a few who were involved earlier in the likes of Nimal Jayasinghe and Chula\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Kariyawasm<\/span><\/span>. The role of judge \u2018<\/span><\/span>Azdak\u2019is<\/span><\/span>\u00a0superbly portrayed by Nalin Pradeep\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Uduwela<\/span><\/span>\u00a0while that of \u2018Grusha\u2019 by a novice\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Ruwini<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Manamperi<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Henry Jayasena was born on 6th July 1931 in a village called \u2018<\/span><\/span>Bendiyamulla<\/span><\/span>\u2019 in Gampaha. He was the youngest in a family of six siblings, four elder brothers and a solitary sister. His father was Albert Rodrigo Jayasena who was once the private secretary to Sir Solamon Dias Bandaranaike, was a skillfully versed person. He grew up in the rural hamlet of \u2018<\/span><\/span>Bendiyamulla<\/span><\/span>\u2019, was initially educated at the Gampaha branch of\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Lorensz<\/span><\/span>\u00a0College exposing him to both catholic and Buddhist cultures taking an active part in both church and temple activities, subsequently at Nalanda College, Colombo. It was late Dr\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Gunapala<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Malalasekera<\/span><\/span>\u00a0an eminent Civil Servant who first predicted a great future for him in the field of acting after the famous educationalist observed the talents of little Henry Jayasena while acting in a school concert at Nalanda College.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Since leaving school he opted for a career as an Assistant Teacher of English at the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Dehipe<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Government Primary School in\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Padiyapellela<\/span><\/span>\u00a0in the Nuwara Eliya District in the year 1950 at the tender age of 19. He initially ventured into stage acting by producing the drama \u2018Janaki\u2019 in the same year while he was a teacher. As he wanted to pursue a career in the Government service, he got through the General Clerical Service Examination and secured a job at the Public Works Department (PWD). While\u00a0working in the PWD with his immense innate creative ability he was able to produce a number of new plays The first of which was \u2018<\/span><\/span>Manamalayo<\/span><\/span>\u2019 in the year 1953, then \u2018<\/span><\/span>Vedagathkama<\/span><\/span>\u2019 in 1954 and \u2018<\/span><\/span>Paukarayo<\/span><\/span>\u2019 in1959. Then the vastly improved Dramatist created \u2018<\/span><\/span>Janelaya<\/span><\/span>\u2019 and the famous \u2018<\/span><\/span>Kuweni<\/span><\/span>\u2019 in 1962. Subsequently he produced \u2018<\/span><\/span>Thavath<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Udesanak<\/span><\/span>\u2019, \u2018<\/span><\/span>Manaranjana<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Wedawarjana<\/span><\/span>\u2019, \u2018Ahas Maliga\u2019, \u2018<\/span><\/span>Hunuwataye<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Kathawa<\/span><\/span>\u2019, \u2018Apata\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Puthe<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Magak Nethe\u2019, \u2018<\/span><\/span>Diriya<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Mava Saha Ege\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Daruwo<\/span><\/span>\u2019, \u2018Makara<\/span><\/span>\u2019,(<\/span><\/span>The Dragon) \u2018Sarana Siyath Se\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Puthuni<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Habha<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Yana\u2019 in the years 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968, 1972, 1973 ,1975 respectively. With these creations Henry Jayasena became a household name in Sri Lanka owing to the massive revolution he made in the field of creative arts.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\"Homage\u00a0As a gesture of appreciation for his contribution towards literature, theatre and music, Henry Jayasena was honored by the OBA of his \u2018Alma Mater Nalanda College\u2019 by conferring on him the title of \u2018Nalanda Keerthi Shri\u2019 on 27th September 2003 which was given for the first time was a timely gesture towards honoring one of Sri Lanka\u2019s prodigal sons who coincidentally happened to be himself a\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Nalandian<\/span><\/span>\u00a0.It is also interesting to note that the actor received the award at the \u201c<\/span><\/span>Malalasekera<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Hall\u201d of the school, named after the first principal of Nalanda College late Professor\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Gunapala<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Malalasekera.The<\/span><\/span>\u00a0media Secretary of the organizing committee said that the idea behind this award was to honor their past\u00a0<\/span><\/span>pupils ,who<\/span><\/span>\u00a0have emerged as distinguished personalities in society by serving and nourishing various arts with their many talents. It was under the guidance of\u00a0<\/span><\/span>U.A.S.Perera<\/span><\/span>\u00a0at Nalanda College that Henry Jayasena and many other students made their way into the theatre and other fields of Arts.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span>The veteran Dramatist was married to talented actress Manel\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Ilangakoon<\/span><\/span>\u00a0in the year 1962. She acted as the lead actress in Jayasena\u2019s drama \u2018<\/span><\/span>Kuweni<\/span><\/span>\u2019 for which she won the best actresses award as well as for her singing. She started to act just one year after their marriage. She made a very valuable contribution to \u2018<\/span><\/span>Hunuwataye<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Kathawa<\/span><\/span>\u2019 (Chalk Circle) portraying the main female role as \u2018<\/span><\/span>Grushe<\/span><\/span>\u2019 For 32 years, opposite the main male character of Judge\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Azdak<\/span><\/span>\u00a0portrayed by her\u00a0<\/span><\/span>husband.henry<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Jayasena. Their only son\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Sudaraka<\/span><\/span>\u00a0during his early years acted for the little Prince\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Micheal<\/span><\/span>. Actress Manel predeceased him after 42 years of married life on the 24th July 2004 following a prolonged renal failure.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\"Homage<\/span><\/span>Henry Jayasena\u2019s debut in films was in Sri 296 in the year 1959. During the 1960s he acted in several films. The part of Piyal opposite Punya\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Heendeniya<\/span><\/span>\u00a0became an award-winning role in 1964. Then he portrayed the role of Lalith in\u00a0<\/span><\/span>G.D.L.Perera\u2019s<\/span><\/span>\u00a0\u2018<\/span><\/span>Dahasak<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Sithuwili<\/span><\/span>\u2019 in 1968. He played vivid roles in \u2018<\/span><\/span>Hansavilak<\/span><\/span>\u2019, \u2018<\/span><\/span>Gehenu<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Geta\u2019, \u2018<\/span><\/span>Kaliyugaya<\/span><\/span>\u2019, \u2018<\/span><\/span>Raththaran<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Neth\u2019, \u2018Wena\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Swargayak<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Kumatada<\/span><\/span>\u2019, \u2018<\/span><\/span>Suhada<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Sohoyuro<\/span><\/span>\u2019, \u2018Heta Pramada Vedie\u2019, \u2018<\/span><\/span>Beddegama<\/span><\/span>\u2019, \u2018<\/span><\/span>Soldadu<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Unnehe<\/span><\/span>\u2019, \u2018<\/span><\/span>Kaliyugaya<\/span><\/span>\u2019, \u2018<\/span><\/span>Ammai<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Duwai<\/span><\/span>\u2019 and \u2018<\/span><\/span>Sandakada<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Pahana<\/span><\/span>\u2019. Some of the roles portrayed by him in the above films were leading characters, while in some others they were supporting roles. In each role he very clearly demonstrated and proved his prowess as an actor. He created a further image in society through his portrayal of \u201c<\/span><\/span>Sudu<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Seeya\u201d,the<\/span><\/span>\u00a0isolated intellect in \u201cDoo\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Daruwo<\/span><\/span>\u2019, the much-acclaimed Tele-Drama.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Henry Jayasena retired from Government service in the year 1975 to devote his entire time for the Theatre and Arts. Before he retired, he held the positions of Deputy Director of the National Youth Services Centre (Arts and Sports Division) and at the Sri Lanka\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Rupavahini<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Corporation (Programs Division).<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
