Amila Rajakaruna and Arshala Dona weren\u2019t big hot sauce people before they founded their business, Tasty Heat\u2019s Sauces and Spicy Foods \u2014 mostly because hot sauce isn\u2019t really a thing in their native Sri Lanka.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe just use peppers and chillies and spices,\u201d said Rajakaruna, who thinks he may be selling the world\u2019s first Sri Lankan hot sauce.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tasty Heat\u2019s products are on the shelves of major retailers in four provinces, including Safeway, Sobeys, Walmart.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, every Saturday night, the husband-wife team rents the kitchen at Winnipeg\u2019s Riverview Community Centre, donning industrial masks to keep the pepper fumes from irritating their throats.<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s where they make and package hundreds of bottles of hot sauce to keep up with growing demand from retailers such as Red River Co-op, Sobeys, Safeway, Lucky Supermarket and \u2014 as of this past month \u2014 Walmart. Their products are now on shelves from Alberta to Ontario.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t think it would go this far, but it did,\u201d said Dona, a food scientist by trade.<\/span><\/p>\n

A homegrown recipe<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The business started in 2016, when Rajakaruna, an IT engineer at the time who had some culinary experience, decided to make a few bottles of Sri Lankan-inspired hot sauce for some family and friends in Winnipeg.<\/span><\/p>\n

They wouldn\u2019t let him stop making it after.<\/span><\/p>\n

The couple had always wanted to start a business of their own and thought perhaps they were on to something, so Rajakaruna designed a label, Dona looked into the health regulations and they started working to package and sell it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Their marketing consultant behind the Tasty Heat\u2019s name was their three-year-old daughter, who said \u201ctasty tasty\u201d every time she wanted food. Their son suggested adding something to do with heat after.<\/span><\/p>\n

To Rajakaruna\u2019s surprise, the domain name tastyheat.com was available for purchase, so he bought it.<\/span><\/p>\n

They started by marketing to smaller Winnipeg grocery stores, and drummed up enough demand that eventually Rajakaruna was able to leave his day job and make hot sauce production his full-time gig. \u201cIt\u2019s a lot of hard work,\u201d Rajakaruna said. \u201cBut we\u2019re happy at the end of the day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A loyal local following<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

It was at one of those local grocery stores where self-proclaimed Tasty Heat\u2019s superfan Savannah Shore happened across what is now a staple for most \u2014 if not all \u2014 of her family\u2019s meals. Her family keeps a minimum of four bottles in their fridge at all times. \u201cYou can really taste the love they put into every single bottle,\u201d Shore said. \u201cIt\u2019s what I love about small businesses and our city. Tasty Heat\u2019s helps make Winnipeg an awesome place.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

She also buys bottles for her extended family members for Christmas each year, and can\u2019t fathom a camping trip without it. \u201cWe pack Tasty Heat\u2019s before we pack our utensils,\u201d Shore said. As the business grows, Rajakaruna and Dona are looking to the future, and how to win over even more people like Shore. They\u2019re now actively looking for a production space of their own and hope to bring more employees into the mix. Further down the road, they would like to start growing their own peppers here in Manitoba and tie the brand\u2019s locally grown image to the province and its people.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s what I want to see,\u201d Rajakaruna said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want to say it\u2019s mine or my business. It\u2019s everybody\u2019s thing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
