Located at the foot of *Pidurutalagala Mountain (Mount Pedro), the tallest mountain in Sri Lanka in the Nuwara Eliya District of Central Province, a unique feature of this scenic hamlet is that it has never seen the first rays of the solar rays nor the remaining rays because of its mountain-locked location. Legends as well as folklore weave through this hamlet\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Enclosed from the west by Piduruthalagala Mountain and from the east by the Balagolla mountain ranges \u00a0and constantly enveloped by a veil of ethereal mist and the seamless presence of nature, the breathtaking hamlet of Mandaram Nuwara evokes images of a faraway land, a mystical terrain occasionally disturbed by the subtle sweep of the wind \u2026 Grasslands dotted with wildflowers, blanketed by a lush green carpet of verdant vistas, gushing cascades with a curtain of milky white froth and rock pools with icy cold water, streams with crystal clear water and sandy beds strewn with massive rocks, terraced paddy fields, breathtaking vistas as far as the eye can see, spellbinding magnificence of the panoramas, the environs are awe-inspiring and similar to a fairy tale village\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Mandaram Nuwara is entwined in myth and legends. According to one legend, the inhabitants are descendants of the queens of the harem of King Sri Wickramarajasinghe II (1798 &#8211; 1815), the last king of the *Kandyan Kingdom as well as *Ceylon. According to folklore, when the King and the Queen were captured by the British Colonials, the queens of his harem had fled to this scenic hamlet and settled down here. The inhabitants of Mandaram Nuwara are descendants of those queens. According to another legend, this charming hamlet surrounded by misty mountains and waterfalls dates to *Rawana era.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-77761\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Mandaram-Nuwara-.jpg\" alt=\"Mandaram Nuwara - misty mysterious mountain locked terrain By Arundathie Abeysinghe\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">With the mist engulfed atmosphere and spectacular vistas, Mandaram Nuwara is similar to a quaint terrain where the concept of time is of no concern. Legends weave through the crossroads of this terrain. According to folklore, during the *Kandyan Kingdom, the village was known as \u2018Mandaram Pura\u2019 as it was used as a hideout by kings of the Kandyan Kingdom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The terrain of Mandaram Nuwara is endowed with several cascades. The magnificent Kolapathana Ella, a breathtaking and multi-step cascade that begins from a stream originating from Pidurutalagala mountain is a waterfall popular amongst visitors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Due to its geographical assemblage, the village receives rain throughout the year. Inhabitants of Mandaram Nuwara are friendly hospitable people. The villagers produce treacle and jaggery (an unrefined sugar product made in Asia and Africa, a traditional non-centrifugal cane sugar) extracted from the sap obtained from the flower of the \u2018Kitul Palm\u2019 (<em>Caryota urens<\/em> &#8211; a species of flowering plant in the palm family, native to Sri Lanka, India, Myanmar and Malaysia).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-77762\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Mandaram-Nuwara-2.jpg\" alt=\"Mandaram Nuwara - misty mysterious mountain locked terrain By Arundathie Abeysinghe\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Directions:<\/strong> From Kandy travel along Haragama Road and after passing Adhikarigama, Hanguranketa, Rikillagaskanda and Poramadulla travel up to Mathurata Road and reach Liyanwela Brook Side Road. In 1972, Ceylon became a republic within the Commonwealth and Ceylon was thereafter known as Sri Lanka.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Kandyan Convention<\/strong> &#8211; This agreement was signed on March 2, 1815 between Kandyan Chieftains (Radalas in Sinhala) of Kandyan Kingdom and the British for the deposition of King Sri Wickrema Rajasinghe (1798-1815), the last monarch of the Kandyan Kingdom as well as Sri Lanka. Kandyan Convention was signed at the *Audience Hall, Kandy. With the signing of the Convention, Kandyan Kingdom as well as entire *Ceylon was ceded to British Rule.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Kandyan Kingdom \u2013<\/strong> Kandy was an important independent monarchy in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) at the end of the 15th century and the last Sinhalese Kingdom to be subjugated by a colonial power. Although, Kandy survived the attacks of *Ceylon\u2019s first two colonial rulers, the Portuguese and the Dutch, it finally yielded to the third and last colonial ruler, the British, in 1818. The kingdom was absorbed into the British Empire as a protectorate following the *Kandyan Convention of 1815 and according to the Convention, the Kandyan King was deposed and sovereignty was vested in the British crown, although the rights of the Kandyan chiefs were largely maintained. The chiefs became dissatisfied with this arrangement and rebelled in 1817, but were subjugated by the British Colonials in 1818. Thus, Ceylon was brought under a unified rule by British Colonials.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Pidurutalagala<\/strong> &#8211; Situated at 2524 meters above sea level, Pidurutalagala (literally translated as \u201cStraw Plateau Rock\u201d) is the highest mountain in Sri Lanka and is situated about seven kilometers from Nuwara Eliya.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Ramayana &#8211;<\/strong> This is an ancient Indian epic composed in 500 BCE to 100 BCE by Indian sage Valmiki. This epic composed in Sanskrit describes the conquest of Sri Lanka in 3000 BC by Prince Rama (Prince of Ayodhya, the eldest and favorite son of King Dasaratha, King of Ayodhya.
