What a difference a year makes!<\/span><\/p>\n

Last Christmas was a washout for everyone, locked down in their\u00a0 tiers and unable to see our loved ones. With any luck this year, Christmas will be back to its old self with work parties, pressie shopping , tipples with friends\u00a0 and of course,\u00a0 the long awaited family gathering, hugs, kisses\u00a0 and\u00a0 the traditional\u00a0 Christmas lunch. So, \u2018Deck the Halls with boughs of Holly\u2019 and prepare for a Christmas transformed \u00a0and\u00a0 different from last year. As we ride this wave of optimism, a note of caution- vigilance, precautionary measures and compliance with the booster dose is key, to make it happen.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

As the World awakes, from its wintery slumber on Christmas morn, the shape of the day will be determined by personal\u00a0 choices. \u2018Tis a season to be jolly \u2019is for\u00a0 non church goers. Their Christmas\u00a0 is one\u00a0 of merriment, featuring all things material and festive \u2013 Christmas tree,\u00a0 fabulous gifts, decorations and strings of twinkling lights.\u00a0 An array of\u00a0 culinary delights to help family and friends gathered, to tuck into with the pre lunch tipple, then a sumptuous festive\u00a0 lunch of \u2018Turkey and trimmings\u2019. Their day, then drifting in an a haze to party games, more wine, more food and\u00a0 maybe\u00a0 a\u00a0 wintery walk.<\/span><\/p>\n

For those of us who believe in the birth of Jesus ( the whole point of Christmas),\u00a0 religious services with \u2018midnight\u00a0 mass\u2019 takes centre stage. As the church bells ring out the \u2018message of great joy\u2019, we\u00a0 share the wonder\u00a0 of Mary and Joseph, watching\u00a0 over\u00a0 baby Jesus, laid in the manger,\u00a0 that first Christmas.\u00a0 The festive\u00a0 Christmas lunch with family and close friends completes the day with sharing of gifts.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe best of all gifts around any Christmas tree: the presence of a happy family all wrapped up in each other\u201d- Burton Hills<\/span><\/p>\n

I have a childlike love of the Season, believing in the magic, the love and the Joy of it all. Still continue to remember those beautiful angels bringing the message \u2018 Joy to the World, the Lord is come\u2019 and will not \u2018let them fly from my mind\u2019. The stars, lights, the crib, nativity plays, Father Christmas, adored carols and of course the stocking on the end of the bed. Oh what joy!<\/span><\/p>\n

There is however,\u00a0 a\u00a0 disconnect between the magic of Christmas imaged by so many of us as children and the reality felt as adults. For the adults, there\u2019s the shopping, the wrapping, labelling, more shopping for food and wine, trying to be the perfect host, the timing of the\u00a0 Christmas meal, washing up and so on and on.. So, every year, Christmas is at once, a joy and a drudgery.<\/span><\/p>\n

But still, after years of these pre- Christmas preparations, I have no idea to change things or whether I really want to!<\/span><\/p>\n

With the on going upheaval due to Covid 19, we all had to get comfortable with change over the last 18 months. Also, whilst managing change and uncertainty, we\u2019re also dealing with unpredictability of daily life \u2013 that element of doubt about this Christmas, is a case in point. Hence, we must count our blessing and be content\u00a0 with what we are lucky to have.\u00a0 Some other countries affected by the Pandemic , were driven to bankruptcy resulting in\u00a0 shortages of essentials like food and fuel, let alone the luxuries\u00a0 we are lucky to have.<\/span><\/p>\n

All this, whilst billionaire entrepreneurs\u00a0 are \u2018heading for the Heavens\u2019, when\u00a0 there are families, who\u00a0 would be lucky to have a choice in\u00a0 selecting a preferred toy for their child <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

As we look towards a challenging winter for many, our ability to extend kindness should be a powerful tool in our arsenal. Such compassion would be more important than ever, this Christmas. The Christmas message \u2018Peace on Earth, goodwill to men\u2019 must signify that Christmas is a time for celebrating the best of humanity \u2013 of generosity, self- sacrifice\u00a0 and kindness.\u00a0 Instead of spend, spend, spend, on food, drink and gift giving even beyond affordability, this\u00a0 would be a good time to shift the spending habit,\u00a0 deciding, to spend less on ourselves .\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It would therefore be a festive gesture of goodwill, to help those in need\u00a0 and\u00a0 spread\u00a0 some Christmas cheer to the less fortunate in our society.<\/span><\/p>\n

Eddie Jacku, the holocaust survivor and author died recently, aged 101. In his memoirs\u00a0 he recalls, that,\u00a0 the most important things he learnt are the three aitches, viz. Hope, Health and Happiness. The secret of happiness is, \u2018 Life is beautiful if you let it be – remember you are lucky to be alive, every breath is a gift\u2019<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Lucky to be alive,\u2019 we are too ! \u00a0This Christmas is a Gift to share and celebrate.<\/span><\/p>\n
