Few sensations are as <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">frightening as not being able to get enough air. Doctors use the term dyspnea for intense<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">tightening in the chest, air hunger, difficulty breathing, breathlessness or a feeling of <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">suffocation. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Breathlessness indicates that the body needs more oxygen and energy when exerting itself. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Now, what are the causes that produce shortness of breath. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Common causes include asthma, a chest infection like pneumonia, a weak heart, being<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">overweight, smoking. It could be a panic attack. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">It could be something serious brewing up in your respiratory system or cardiovascular <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">system. A common lung condition called chronic obstructive airway disease, bronchiectasis<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">and lung cancer must be thought of. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Let\u2019s discuss about COPD- meaning chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">If you are breathless for a long time, you could be suffering from COPD. It is a progressive <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">To test you blow hard into a mouthpiece that is connected to a small mouthpiece that is <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">connected to a machine called a spirometer, that measures how fast you blow air out of your <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">lungs. The results can tell you have COPD, even if you haven\u2019t got any symptoms yet. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">You may be less active, have reduced fitness and reduced muscle strength. It is characterized by a decrease in circulating levels <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">of a protein called alpha1 antitrypsin. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">AAT deficiency is the major known genetic risk factor for COPD, particularly emphysema. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Your environment in what you breathe everyday at work, home and outside can play a role in <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">developing COPD. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Other risk factors for COPD are exposure to tobacco, having asthma, occupational exposure <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">to dusts and chemicals, exposure to fumes from burning fuel and genetic factors.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Substances that have been linked to COPD include <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Cadmium dust and fumes, grain and flour dust, silica dust, welding fumes, and coal dust. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">If you get a cough with lots of mucus, that does not go away could be an early sign of the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">disease. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">You could have shortness of breath when you are physically active. Look for blue fingers<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">present due to lack of oxygen in your blood.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Later stages, if neglected you could lose weight and still later given swelling around your <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">ankles, feet, and legs. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Investigations include spirometry as mentioned earlier. CT scan, laboratory tests to determine <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">the cause of your symptoms or rule other conditions. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Medical treatment include: Bronchodilators, corticosteroids, combined inhalers to reduce air <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">way inflammation, antibiotics. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Drug called Roflumilast to stop an enzyme called PDE4. This drug prevents flare-ups in <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">people whose COPD is linked to chronic bronchitis and lastly, oxygen therapy. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Beware of household items that cause exacerbation of symptoms.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Cleaning products: some chemicals in disinfectants and cleaning supplies called volatile <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">organic compounds.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">You need to be aware- carpets, bedding, and pet dander can cause exacerbations. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Let us now discuss what bronchiectasis is. This is a chronic condition where the walls of the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">bronchi get thickened from inflammation and infection. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The common causes are pneumonia, pertussis or whooping cough, tuberculosis, and non- TB<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">mycobacterium. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Ultimately the tubes get damaged and widened. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">It is a serious condition and early diagnosis, and treatment will be necessary. It can lead to <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">respiratory failure. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Antibiotics are the common treatment for bronchiectasis. This condition could be caused as a <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">complication of COPD. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Shortness of breath you could get due to congestive heart failure. It occurs when the heart <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">muscle does not pump blood as well as it should. When that happens, blood often backs up <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">and fluid can build up in the lungs, causing shortness of breath. Doctors prescribe diuretics <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">like Lasix to get rid of the excess fluid in the lungs. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">It is advisable to avoid excessive salt intake, sugar and saturated fat and eat plenty of fiber in <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">the form of fruits, veggies, and whole grain. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Bananas are good for you, because the potassium can help reduce water retention, regulate <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">blood pressure, and improve digestion, to maintain good lung function. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Coffee is good for you. One study found improved lung function in coffee consumers.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Taking certain dietary supplements help, including vitamin C, D Magnesium, omega 3s, zinc <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">and selenium. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Eggs are good for you.
