Undaunted by Covid restrictions and undeterred by intermittent closure of schools, St. Cecilia\u2019s Choir of St. Joseph\u2019s College went on to conduct the annual Carols Service in all its splendour, whilst adhering to all mandatory health regulations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Aptly titled \u201cVerbum Caro\u201d (and the Word was made Flesh), the central theme of the sacred event focused on the stupendous Christian mystery of the Son of God coming to Earth as a fragile babe in order to endure the pangs of our human existence.<\/span><\/p>\n

Held in the evening of December 18, at the vast Rev. Dr. Abeysekere Auditorium, as the solemn entrance procession made its way in, bearing the statue of the Infant Jesus, the Choir chanted the traditional Christmas antiphon, \u201cJesu Redemptor Omnium\u201d, enhancing the rendition with a four-part chorus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After the Opening Prayer by Rev. Fr. Dilip Charles, the relevant reflections were studded in between, as the anthems and carols cascaded to provide a smooth flow. It captured the fascinating biblical stories that began with Mary\u2019s \u201cfiat\u201d to God\u2019s call, on the day the Angel Gabriel appeared to her. Thereafter came Mary\u2019s exuberant hymn of praise with Elizabeth titled \u201cBe Exalted\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The five part rendition of \u201cSilent Night\u201d \u2013first in German and then in English \u2013 proclaimed the Nativity of Christ the Saviour.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The presentations of carols by the 66-membered choir, vocalised the popular Christmas favorite \u2013 \u201cSeethala Sulanga Hamai\u201d, as well as the traditional Tamil carol, \u201cRajathi Rajamani\u201d. They also sang for the first time, the mellifluous \u201cJoseph\u2019s Lullaby\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Thereafter came the Advanced Level students who are now earnestly preparing for their periodically postponed examinations, to sing the soul-stirring song \u201cMary Did You Know?\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Next, the Old Joes Choir rendered two classical compositions \u201cAway in a Manger\u201d and \u201cAngels from the Realms of Glory\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

A brief Christmas message by Rev. Fr. Ranjith Andradi, the Rector of St. Joseph\u2019s College, succinctly reflected on the reason for the season \u2013 Jesus Christ, the Son of God. This was followed by his blessing.<\/span><\/p>\n

St. Cecilia\u2019s Choir of St. Joseph\u2019s College re-entered the arena to sing the rousing carol \u201cO Holy Night\u201d \u2013 first in French and then in English.\u00a0 A selected group of senior singers then sang the modern composition \u201cSaviour\u2019s Day\u201d in resonating choral harmony with the Bass and Tenor singers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Composer Vivaldi\u2019s \u201cGloria in Excelsis Deo\u201d, although musically challenging, was gloriously presented by the Josephian choristers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Josephian Carols 2021 which also commemorated the 125th anniversary of the College itself, culminated with the popular carol \u201cJoy to the World\u201d, lustily sung by the Choir and Congregation.<\/span><\/p>\n

As those assembled prepared to leave the arena, the Choir sang the exhilarating Spanish song \u201cFeliz Navidad\u201d, wishing everyone a happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Josephian Carols 2021 could be considered as a clarion call to young people, to defy all odds and overcome challenges to do what has to be done.\u00a0 Since our world has radically changed as never before in human history, we face the turbulent challenge of wading through the stormy weather to reach our goals and even go beyond.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
