text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">Gurpreet is a classification officer at Newington House at the Silverwater Correctional Complex, deciding where inmates are placed and where they have the best chance at turning their lives around.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">\u201cIt is a long journey for inmates \u2013 we do a risk assessment, build a case plan and try to keep them at the lowest level of classification so they can get into the right programs,\u201d the deputy superintendent says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">\u201cClassification and placement is very important &#8211; if you move an inmate from one location to another and they don\u2019t have a program, they\u2019re just going to sit down and do nothing, which might encourage them to do the wrong thing again.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-84695\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/From-prison-cells-to-Sikh-gurdwara-how-officer-uses-faith-to-help-others-4-scaled-e1642666704892.jpg\" alt=\"From prison cells to Sikh gurdwara how officer uses faith to help others\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">Gurpreet has spent 27 years with Corrective Services NSW, working as a staff trainer, case manager in various rehabilitation programs including sex offender programs, and now classification.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">\u201cPrograms that help with aggression, or drugs and alcohol, play a very important role \u2013 it means when inmates leave prison, they can get work and deal with psychological issues which reduces reoffending behaviour,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">\u201cI have dealt with difficult cases and high-profile offenders \u2013 sometimes it is very hard to get those people back into society but it builds your skills so you can help others.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">Gurpreet is among 10,000 CSNSW staff celebrated on National Corrections Day, Friday 21 January, for their commitment to giving back to the community through their work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">As a Sikh, Gurpreet practises \u2018sewa\u2019 \u2013 the act of selfless service \u2013 which means working or giving back to the community without any thought of reward or personal gain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">\u201cWhether it\u2019s fundraising, serving food at a gurdwara (a Sikh place of worship), cleaning kitchen utensils or sharing earnings with the needy \u2013 it\u2019s all about cultivating altruism, or sewa, and helping the wider community,\u201d Gurpreet says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">\u201cYou learn from your parents and then you teach your kids \u2013 we teach the next generation to be selfless, to help others and encourage those positive principles.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-84697\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/From-prison-cells-to-Sikh-gurdwara-how-officer-uses-faith-to-help-others-3-scaled-e1642666926415.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">The 2022 National Corrections Day theme is Giving Back, focusing on how our staff go beyond the call of duty to protect the community, mentor staff, fundraise for important charities and contribute to vital community projects and partnerships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;
