color: #000000;\">Macquarie Group chief executive\u00a0Shemara Wikramanayake earned\u00a0$16.39million in 2021, the bank announced in its latest report.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Ms Wikramanayake guided Macquarie &#8211; dubbed the country&#8217;s &#8216;millionaire factory&#8217; &#8211; to profits of $1.3billion in the last three months of the year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">In 2019, the 60-year-old was the first woman to become Australia&#8217;s top-earning CEO.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">She migrated to Australia in the 1970s with her family\u00a0at the age of 14 before attending Sydney&#8217;s elite $34,000-a-year Ascham School and quickly rising up the ranks as a lawyer and a banker.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-86407\" src=\"https:\/\/websitedesigns.com.au\/elankanew\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Australias-315k-a-week-woman-2-e1644635837342.png\" alt=\"Australia's $315k-a-week woman: How the daughter of migrants who arrived Down Under with $200 in their pockets became the nation's highest-paid CEO-By CHARLIE CO\u00cb\" width=\"600\" height=\"344\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Her father Ranji told the\u00a0<a class=\"class\" style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/world\/asia\/the-rise-fall-and-rise-of-macquarie-banks-first-family-20180904-h14wqu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\">Australian Financial Review<\/a>\u00a0in 2018 the family had enjoyed a life of privilege growing up in Sri Lanka, but they fell on tough times before finally settling in Australia in 1975.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"artSplitter mol-img-group\">\n<div class=\"mol-img\">\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The Wikramanayakes came from a long line of highly-educated barristers and powerful figures.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Ranji graduated from medical school in 1958 and moved to London with his wife, Amara, for further training in the same year.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">The young couple settled down and started a family in England. They had two daughters, Roshana in 1960 and Shemara the following year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">Shemara&#8217;s uncle said the entire family once &#8216;had a very privileged life&#8230; we didn&#8217;t want for anything,&#8217; but when they arrived in England, they came with very little.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">In 1975, Ranji made a call on the future of his family.
