\"Sunil-Thenabadu\"Weera\u202f<\/span><\/span>Matha<\/span><\/span>\u2019\u202f\u202fVisharada\u202f Dr Sujatha\u202fAttanayake, the musical genius acclaimed as one of the most popular vocalists, commenced her pivotal career in music when she was just eight years when she sang a song at the then Radio Ceylon ,to the music\u202f composed by AJ\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Kareem.Since<\/span><\/span>\u00a0then she had not looked back apart from deploying diverse techniques such as\u202f<\/span><\/span>Gamak<\/span><\/span>, Tan,\u202f<\/span><\/span>Meend<\/span><\/span>, and singing styles such as Khayal,\u202fDhruvpad,\u202fTarana\u202fand\u202fDhamar\u202fthat measure their theoretical and animated values, the guiding philosophy of the inventiveness of music\u00a0 artistry. Sujatha could play many musical instruments conquering the Harmonium and Sitar, also\u00a0<\/span><\/span>excelling\u00a0\u00a0in<\/span><\/span>\u00a0composing\u00a0notations in quick succession.\u202f\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Sujatha could sing in numeral styles and languages\u00a0<\/span><\/span>including\u00a0\u00a0Tamil<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and Hindi\u00a0sans\u00a0any\u00a0clue of the slenderest Sinhalese inspiration, and when she sings a song in the North Indian classical music tradition, she is not influenced by South Indian or the Carnatic tradition of music although she is an expert in both. She had acquired the Tamil\u00a0<\/span><\/span>influence\u00a0 having<\/span><\/span>\u00a0visited India with her mother\u202fWimala\u202fKantha during her younger days.\u00a0 She was Sri\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Lanka\u2019s\u00a0\u00a0female<\/span><\/span>\u00a0most\u00a0<\/span><\/span>sought after<\/span><\/span>\u00a0vocalist\u00a0for decades,\u00a0had sung in over 350\u00a0Sinhalese\u00a0films in possessing an idealistic \u2018screen voice\u2019 Her first film song was in SM\u202fNayagam\u2019s\u202f\u201c<\/span><\/span>Sohoyuro<\/span><\/span>\u201d film in year 1956.In addition she\u00a0had sung in 19 Tamil\u202ffilms, so many light songs well over one thousand songs which have become all- time hits etched\u00a0in the hearts of her\u00a0<\/span><\/span>over\u00a0 millions<\/span><\/span>\u00a0of\u00a0fans scattered all over. When compared with versatile Indian classical singers in North Indian and South Indian Carnatic traditions, Sujatha is the only Sri Lankan singer\u00a0<\/span><\/span>with\u00a0\u00a0such<\/span><\/span>\u00a0a wide tonal range of voice as wide as those of Indian classical singers. She has the best trained voice among all Sri Lankan singers.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Sujatha had been a sought-after vocalist for many Tamil\u00a0<\/span><\/span>films,concerts<\/span><\/span>\u00a0too. Fundamentally, the Carnatic tradition of music is entirely dissimilar to Hindustani tradition and in fact, there are few singers like Sujatha who had mastered both traditions which is a salient conception of hers. It is due to her sheer vocal ingenuity that she is able to sing songs in diverse genres in\u00a0<\/span><\/span>a<\/span><\/span>\u00a0array of languages such as Sinhala, Tamil, Hindi, Nepali,\u202f<\/span><\/span>Marati<\/span><\/span>, Urdu, Islamic, Gujarati and Bengali in which languages she is well familiar in.\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Sujatha\u2019s contribution to Sri Lankan arts and culture was emphasized by many to create a popular tradition of music that combined the essence of all three \u2013 folk,\u202fclassical and popular – while not falling victim to the insignificance, debasements and vulgarization of flavor associated with popular mass musical culture.\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Sujatha\u202f,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0is Sri Lanka’s first ever female film music director\/composer, stands out as an object tutorial for a gifted musician who applies virtual creed in directing and composing music.\u202fThe film was \u2018<\/span><\/span>Hariyata<\/span><\/span>\u202fHari\u2019\u202fIn this\u202fbackdrop\u202fshe could take up any challenge in the music\u00a0<\/span><\/span>arena.For<\/span><\/span>\u00a0the 150<\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/sup><\/span>\u00a0year of existence of the Police Department year before last when the authorities of the Police administration had entrusted\u00a0Sujatha to compose the music for the Police theme song<\/span><\/span>\u00a0which she\u00a0had\u00a0done immaculately. It is pertinent to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>quote,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0her father MD Perera\u00a0<\/span><\/span>was\u00a0\u00a0a<\/span><\/span>\u00a0\u00a0former Police Officer.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span>In the year 2013 her solo concert \u201cJeewana\u202f<\/span><\/span>wila<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>meda<\/span><\/span>\u201d after a lapse of decades since her solo \u201cEsi\u202fMihira\u201d shows,\u00a0was held to a packed house at the\u202f<\/span><\/span>Nelum<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>Pokuna<\/span><\/span>\u202fperforming arts theatre under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.<\/span><\/span>\u202f\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“Sujatha\u202f<\/span><\/span>Attanayaka<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>Divisirita<\/span><\/span>“, her biography and “Sujatha\u202f<\/span><\/span>Attanayaka<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>Geethawaliya<\/span><\/span>” was launched\u202fon 11th November 2017 to coincide with her 75th birthday, also her\u202f67th year in\u00a0her music career.\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u202fSujatha\u202fwas fittingly honored with a doctorate by the authorities in the Visual and Performing Arts University during the University\u2019s annual convocation in\u00a0December\u00a02019 by the Chancellor\u202fSangeeth\u202fNipun\u202fSanath\u202fNandasiri.\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Sujatha has inherited the influence of \u2018<\/span><\/span>Noorthi<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>Gee\u2019from<\/span><\/span>\u202fher mother\u202fWimala\u202fKantha and sister\u202fFlori\u202fDevi both exponents of\u202f<\/span><\/span>Noorthi<\/span><\/span>\u202fGee. Recently with her wide knowledge she compiled and launched a book containing one hundred (100)\u202f<\/span><\/span>Noorthi<\/span><\/span>\u202fGees of the Tower Hall era with accurate phonetics\u202f(<\/span><\/span>swara<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>prasthara<\/span><\/span>),\u00a0very useful\u202fto\u202fschool teachers\u202fof aesthetics when\u00a0there is a dearth of such books.\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Sujatha was never curious in receiving awards for reasons best known to her. To indicate a few in the year 1965 Sujatha received the Swarna\u202fSanka\u202faward for the song\u202fDuka\u202fEna\u202fKala from the film “Yata\u202f<\/span><\/span>giya<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>dawasa<\/span><\/span>“.\u00a0In year 1966\u202f<\/span><\/span>Sarasaviya<\/span><\/span>\u202faward and\u202f<\/span><\/span>Sawarna<\/span><\/span>\u202fSanka\u202faward for the song \u2018<\/span><\/span>Parauna<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>malwala<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>suwanda<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>athethe<\/span><\/span>\u2019 in “<\/span><\/span>Parasathu<\/span><\/span>\u202fmal\u00a0<\/span><\/span>film.In<\/span><\/span>\u202fyear 1972 award for the best singer for the song\u202f<\/span><\/span>Punchi<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>Dawaswala<\/span><\/span>, then\u202f<\/span><\/span>Kumarathunga<\/span><\/span>\u202fSamuru\u202faward.1974 best playback singer for\u202f<\/span><\/span>Parauna<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>mal,\u202f\u202fSarasavi<\/span><\/span>\u202faward and Swarna\u202fSanka\u202fawards.\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u202f<\/span><\/span> Sujatha was born on 12th of May 1942 she was the 3rd in a family of five siblings. Eldest sister\u202fFlori\u202fDevi a renowned Tower Hall actress then elder brother Dharmasiri\u202fPerera\u202fa music teacher, younger sister singer\u202fRanjani\u202fand youngest brother\u202f<\/span><\/span>Susil\u202f\u202frenowned<\/span><\/span>\u00a0as\u00a0<\/span><\/span>a\u00a0 drummer<\/span><\/span>. She married\u202f<\/span><\/span>Nawaratne<\/span><\/span>\u202fAttanayake\u202fa Director of Education,\u00a0Aesthetics. Sujatha too served the department of education as\u202f<\/span><\/span>a<\/span><\/span>\u202fAssistant Director of education-Aesthetics. The duo was blessed with three sons Heli,\u202f<\/span><\/span>Chanaka<\/span><\/span>\u202fand\u202fSamin.\u202f\u00a0Captain\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Chanaka<\/span><\/span>\u202fsacrificed his life while serving in the army in 1992 while eldest Heli is having his own business while\u202fSamin\u202fis an airline pilot attached to Etihad airlines based in Abu Dhabi.\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

At Fox Hill Chess Fiesta 2019 one of the highlights of the awards ceremony was the presentation of a souvenir to Sujatha\u202fthe \u2018<\/span><\/span>Weeramatha<\/span><\/span>\u2019 souvenir in the form of a memento by Brigadier\u202fKithsiri\u202fEkanayaka, Chairman of the Army Chess Committee.\u202fSujatha\u2019s\u202fson, Captain\u202f<\/span><\/span>Chanaka<\/span><\/span>\u202f Sanjeewa\u202f Attanayake, sacrificed his life while on duty at\u202f <\/span><\/span>Pooneryn<\/span><\/span>\u202fon, 25th September 1992. He was an infantry colleague of Brigadier\u202fKithsiri\u202fEkanayake.\u202fIt is relevant to mention that when\u202f<\/span><\/span>Chanaka<\/span><\/span>\u202f met with his tragic death Sujatha was at a concert in Melbourne Australia and\u202f<\/span><\/span>Nawaratne <\/span><\/span>\u202fAttanayake\u202fwas employed in Florida USA.\u202fBoth had to rush back to Sri Lanka for his funeral.\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u202f<\/span><\/span> Having known\u202fSujatha-<\/span><\/span>Nawaratne<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Attanayake\u202ffamily\u202fvery intimately for over five decades have discovered to be a\u202fphilanthropic\u202fduo always striving to boost the welfare of others via donation of money and\u202fservices. As\u202fa characteristic of\u202fphilanthropic\u202fpersons,\u202fthe duo\u202fhaving\u202fseen success in their\u202fperquisite,\u202ftwo are concerned of the welfare of others who venture to alleviate the hindrances of others been\u202fempathetic\u202fwithout seeking whatsoever for their own personal\u202fbenefit. As\u202fa\u202fvery close family comrade there are many more illustrations and evidences to prove.\u202f\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n<\/div>\n

\n

The duo collects money from relations and friends to buy dry rations to be given to destitute living in the border villages in\u202fWeli\u202fOya which they do every three months uninterruptedly. The distribution is done in a systemic transparent manner with the help of Army personnel in\u202fWeli\u202f Oya.\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u00a0<\/span>Sujatha during her peak had conducted music classes for novices. Two such who became fame were\u202fUresha\u202f<\/span><\/span>Ravihari<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>and\u202f Asanka<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>Piyamantha<\/span><\/span>, still teaches music\u202ffor\u00a0<\/span><\/span>University<\/span><\/span>\u00a0students. Her charges are very nominal, but do not charge from the poor folk. She is a staunch Buddhist who goes on pilgrimages to India\u202feach\u00a0year,\u202fobserves Eight Merits on every\u202fPoya\u202fday. She has put up a small house in Anuradhapura where the duo spends two weeks of the month specifically for worshiping\u00a0the shrines and promoting Buddhist activities.\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u00a0<\/span>Finally, it should be said that she should go in the annals of music as a modest unpretentious down to earth legendary singer. \u2018Weera\u202f<\/span><\/span>Matha<\/span><\/span>\u2019\u202fVisharada\u202fDr Sujatha\u202fAttanayake\u202fin her twilight years. All Sri Lankans should extend gratitude for the services rendered to our music philosophy\u202fto\u202fwish her good\u00a0<\/span><\/span>well being<\/span><\/span>,\u00a0health\u00a0and longevity.\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
