This is how it should be. As I have always said, an Author will exhibit his\/her talents in books, lengthy or short (paragraphs containing thousands of words), whereas a songwriter uses just a few verses and a chorus or two in which to portray a “story”.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here, then, is the story behind an extremely popular Country song that came into fruition quite recently, and was recorded by various Artistes. Please enjoy the story of the song.<\/span><\/p>\n

Save the Last Dance for Me \u2013 <\/strong>by\u00a0Kimberly Elkins<\/span><\/h1>\n

Doc Pomus, who wrote songs for Elvis Presley, Andy Williams and Ray Charles, based one of his biggest hits on a\u00a0moment from\u00a0his own life.<\/span><\/p>\n

Doc Pomus urged his beautiful bride, Willi Burke, to dance at their 1957 wedding. He watched as she whirled around the floor in the arms of relatives and friends. But she and Doc never danced. He was on crutches, having lost the use of his legs after a childhood bout with polio.<\/span><\/p>\n

Doc (born Jerome Felder) grew up in Brooklyn, New York, loving music, especially the blues. As a young man, he made a living singing in Black blues clubs. After recording dozens of songs, he thought he finally had a hit. But the record company didn\u2019t release the song after learning he was a disabled Jewish guy.<\/span><\/p>\n

Doc shifted to song writing, penning such hits as \u201cViva Las Vegas,\u201d \u201cThis Magic Moment\u201d and \u201cA Teenager in Love.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Some three years after his marriage, Doc was scribbling lyrics on the back of unused wedding invitations, trying to match words to a soaring Latin melody composed by his partner Mort Shuman. Doc remembered how it felt to watch his bride dance with someone else. \u201cBut don\u2019t forget who\u2019s taking you home and in whose arms you\u2019re going to be,\u201d he wrote. \u201cSo, darling, save the last dance for me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Drifters recorded \u201cSave the Last Dance for Me\u201d in 1960, and it spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100 chart. Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris would later cover the song born of Doc\u2019s<\/span><\/p>\n
