As he grew up Rookantha\u00a0used to hear the songs the sister used to sing.Later\u00a0when the sister became a girl guide, she had sung songs in all three languages. The songs that his elder sister sang Rookantha\u00a0had learnt with sheer enthusiasm.Mother\u00a0to encourage him had asked the students to find her the lyrics of the song \u2018Amma\u201d which she had thought Rookantha.Mother\u00a0had sent him to piano classes to a teacher.Though\u00a0Rookantha\u00a0was a bit exuberant\u00a0he had received attention from the home folks&#8217; relatives and friends. Presently One of the most authoritative\u00a0musical artists in Sri Lanka, Rookantha\u00a0started his career as a solo singer in late 1980s after few stints as a keyboard player but his passion is composing music playing the organ.\u00a0He frequently performs duets with his wife,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_-3925820613237493277normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Chandralekha Perera which are known to all.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_-3925820613237493277normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0His daughters Raini Charuka and Windy who are also singers having inherited hereditary affiliations to music from the parents.As\u00a0a father Rookantha\u00a0had given them freedom to do what they liked though he had preferred the duo to follow his footsteps. Windy it appears takes more interest in learning music which Rookantha\u00a0had himself observed.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_-3925820613237493277eop\">\u00a0<\/span><u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p class=\"m_-3925820613237493277paragraph\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><span class=\"m_-3925820613237493277normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Rookantha\u00a0is one of the most successful musicians in Sri Lankan pop and sentimental music industry. He is well known as the King of Pop amongst Sri Lankans.But\u00a0he sings in \u00a0western,eastern\u00a0,soul , rhythm and blues too\u00a0His albums have been sold in thousands, picked up as hot cakes\u00a0in Sri Lanka and abroad. He is known as the person who changed the Sri Lankan music industry by revolutionizing the hitherto compositions with new brand of songs in\u00a0the 1980\u2019 s which the fans still wish to hear.Rookantha\u00a0was fortunate to meet great musicians like Stanley Peiris and Cyril Brown during his tenure in Kandy.Rookantha\u00a0married vocalist and actress then Chandralekha Perera .The duo are blessed with two daughters Raini Charuka\u00a0and Windy.Rookantha\u00a0had first met Chandralekha when he was 17 years old and Chandralekha 15 years old through music.The\u00a0 duo had\u00a0been members of two separate bands in Kandy.The\u00a0one Rookantha\u00a0was in has had sound whereas for Chandralekha\u2019s band was devoid of sound.Hence\u00a0they \u00a0were compelled to hire sounds from a place in Kurunegala.The\u00a0owner had asked whether they needed an organ.When\u00a0it was expressed that do not have some to play Rookantha\u2019s\u00a0name had been suggested.That\u00a0is how the two had come to know each other.Rookantha\u00a0had been invited to sing and play at a show in Medirigiriya\u00a0when he was able just to talk to her only but her father had inquired about the family.Rookantha\u00a0had got more familiar with her father as he had known Rookantha\u2019s\u00a0aunt (mother\u2019s sister) who had been teaching with her. However, the link had got terminated for a number of years as Chandralekha\u2019s father had wanted her to join the National Youth Services Centre to pursue a higher education in music.During\u00a0this period Rookantha\u00a0had thought of owning his own band with musicians like Raju Bandara in Kurunegala where the band had got many music contracts.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_-3925820613237493277eop\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p class=\"m_-3925820613237493277paragraph\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><span class=\"m_-3925820613237493277normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Thereafter Rookantha\u00a0despite his busy schedule with the band pursued a career as a composer from the year 1976 when he developed his musical instincts with his intuitive way of thinking always needing to revolutionize our music patterns. He was not concentrating on his own vocals much though he had innate talent in abundance.He\u00a0provided his music compositions with ultimate enthusiasm to others.But\u00a0in year 1985 failing to find a vocalist had himself sung songs for his \u201cBambara Pahasa\u00a0\u201c \u00a0cassette\u00a0 \u00a0which was a huge hit released on 31<\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_-3925820613237493277normaltextrun\"><sup><span lang=\"EN-US\">st<\/span><\/sup><\/span><span class=\"m_-3925820613237493277normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0October.In\u00a01988 he commenced providing vocals himself beginning a career as a vocalist.His\u00a0fourth album was named Charuka after his daughter \u201cRaini Charuka\u201d was released in year 1998.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_-3925820613237493277eop\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p class=\"m_-3925820613237493277paragraph\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><span class=\"m_-3925820613237493277normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0He first composed the music for Jaliya Ranatunga&#8217;s collection of 12 songs where he did lyrics for\u00a0two songs. The exclusive concert of Rookantha\u00a0and Chandralekha is &#8216;Ru Sanda\u00a0Rae&#8217; which means &#8220;Beauty Moon Night&#8221;. The first concert was staged at the Elphinston\u00a0Theatre in Colombo, Sri Lanka in February 1993. To-date it has been staged in many places in Sri Lanka and around the globe including Italy, France, Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, UK, USA, and the UAE. The &#8216;Ru Sanda\u00a0Rae&#8217; concert has been staged more than 300 times .<\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_-3925820613237493277eop\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p class=\"m_-3925820613237493277paragraph\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><span class=\"m_-3925820613237493277normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The mega show of &#8216;Rookantha-<\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_-3925820613237493277normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Chandralekha&#8217; live show<\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_-3925820613237493277normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0was held in August 2009 at the Sugathadasa\u00a0Indoor Stadium. Many fans had to turn around as the tickets were sold out weeks before the concert overcrowding the Sugathadasa\u00a0Stadium with over 15,000 people had thronged the stadium. Since then, the family has been traveling back and forth holding \u2018Ru Sanda\u00a0Rae\u2019 concerts around the country. A special concert was held on the 11 August 2012\u00a0at the Sugathadasa\u00a0Indoor Stadium, Colombo again to a packed enthusiastic\u00a0audience.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_-3925820613237493277eop\">\u00a0<\/span><u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p class=\"m_-3925820613237493277paragraph\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><span class=\"m_-3925820613237493277normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">In 2019, he worked as a judge in the television reality show\u00a0<i>Hiru Star<\/i>. However, he was assaulted by some group of people and damaged his vehicle by stating that Rookantha\u00a0did not give his vote to a contestant.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_-3925820613237493277eop\">\u00a0<\/span><u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p class=\"m_-3925820613237493277paragraph\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><span class=\"m_-3925820613237493277eop\">\u00a0<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/h8pRSo1D80U\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/span><u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p class=\"m_-3925820613237493277paragraph\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><span class=\"m_-3925820613237493277normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">On January 26, 2000, at around 9.00 pm, Rookantha\u00a0and Chandralekha were raided by members of the former President Chandrika Bandaranailke\u00a0\u2018s security<\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_-3925820613237493277normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_-3925820613237493277normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">forces, who cut off their hair. They had thrown petrol at the body, looted a jeep belonging to them, also gold and other belongings and fled. The personnel who were found guilty by\u00a0the Panadura High Court sentenced them to four and a half years in prison. in 2013. One of the defendants, who was completely disabled, was given a lenient sentence. In 2014, Rookantha\u00a0granted a presidential pardon to the defendants and later released by President Mahinda Rajapaksa \u2018s pardon. One person in Welikada\u00a0Prison and eight others in Kalutara Prison were released on bail.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_-3925820613237493277normaltextrun\"><b><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/span><span class=\"m_-3925820613237493277normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The\u00a0<b>c<\/b>ase had gone on for over thirteen years in courts. According to Rookantha\u00a0the convicts were not the real culprits. Those who were actually involved in acts of criminal intimidation and physical harassment had gone\u00a0scot-free. They had committed those offences on the instigation of their masters. They were well armed with weapons when they came to their\u00a0residence. Actually, some of them didn\u2019t know what they were up to. When the attackers on their way back had questioned their leader, Baddegane\u00a0Sanjeewa as to why Rookantha\u2019s\u00a0house was attacked, he had bluntly told them \u201c It\u00a0is none of your business to question me, I have received\u00a0orders from the top.\u201d\u00a0With evidence being proved, the offenders were sentenced to two-and-half-years to three years. So out of compassion they were pardoned\u00a0because they were merely carrying out the orders of their masters. After that incident through frustration Rookantha\u00a0 and family left to the USA had returned only after thirteen years. in year 2019 with the intentions of entering into politics,\u00a0he was appointed as the electorate organizer of Dambadeniya of the united national party.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_-3925820613237493277eop\">\u00a0<\/span><u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p class=\"m_-3925820613237493277paragraph\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><span class=\"m_-3925820613237493277normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Rookantha\u00a0had made a lot of music tracks, some of them were Hitha Newathuna\u00a0Thena,Sangawanna\u00a0<wbr \/>oya\u00a0nil nuwan,Kalakata\u00a0passe,<wbr \/>Upaharaya\u00a0( for\u00a0the ICC cricket world cup 2011),Dura\u00a0Atha,Ithin\u00a0Hadamu\u00a0<wbr \/>Aluth\u00a0Ratak with Kasun Kalhara after the victory in the ethnic war.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_-3925820613237493277eop\">\u00a0<\/span><u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p class=\"m_-3925820613237493277paragraph\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><span class=\"m_-3925820613237493277normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Rookantha\u00a0had not sung many songs but it is learnt had sung only two hundred songs most of which have become popular hits.Some\u00a0of them are Dasama\u00a0Riddana,Manaloli\u00a0<wbr \/>Manamaliyo, Anganawo, Nihanda\u00a0Mawathe, Lande Mula Wee, Sande Oba, Bol Pini Wehena, Anatha Maruthe, Kandulu\u00a0Binduwak\u00a0Man Wenuwen,Suwanda\u00a0Danee,Midule\u00a0<wbr \/>Athana\u00a0Nango,Adare\u00a0Mage Jesune,Sandapana\u00a0Wage,Indunil\u00a0<wbr \/>Gangulai,Dedunu\u00a0Patai, Sithin\u00a0Sina\u00a0Sisi,Suwanda\u00a0Dena Mal Wane,Sandapane\u00a0Wage Dilenne,Renu\u00a0Renu,Kalu\u00a0Lily Mal Kakuli,Sanda\u00a0Pini Diye,Adu\u00a0Kule Kiyala\u00a0etc.Most\u00a0of the songs had been sung in the latter part of the 2000 year\u00a0decade. The duet with Chandralekha \u201cMata Mulu Lowama\u00a0Obai\u201d Rookantha\u00a0claims a song that was a milestone in his singing career which became very popular. In year 1995 Rookantha\u2019s\u00a0song Me Diganthe\u00a0has gone to a world chart show ,\u00a0the first time a song of a Sri Lankan had been included in such a chart show.The\u00a0song had been placed at number seven for a few days only Rookantha\u00a0recollects. Most lyrics are by Rookantha\u00a0himself also the music compositions which are all originals.Rookantha\u00a0never imitates other singers has his own rare inimitable style. Rookantha\u00a0is known to help many musicians and vocalists which is one of the hall marks of his nature.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_-3925820613237493277eop\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p class=\"m_-3925820613237493277paragraph\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><span class=\"m_-3925820613237493277normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Mahinda Bandara in a television interview had stated that he had known Rookantha\u00a0for over forty years as both have grown up in the same vicinity in Kegalle.He\u00a0had praised him for been an updated person always, very humble willing to help anyone.Rookantha\u00a0is more competent in composition of music, a lyricist ,\u00a0pianist and a dynamic\u00a0organist. He was more concerned on creative music deviating from the normal compositions, but a very emotional person, a good companion to associate.Similar\u00a0comments were made by legendary musician Rohana Weerasinghe on Rookantha\u00a0who was full of praise for his creative work. with many diverse compositions which are very rare and soothing to hear.Rookantha\u2019s\u00a0music talents were highly hailed and applauded.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"m_-3925820613237493277eop\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p class=\"m_-3925820613237493277paragraph\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;
