After two decades Maestro Lester James Pieris wanted to reproduce the Golu Hadawatha\u00a0as a teledrama.<\/span><span class=\"m_8763434762232736854eop\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p class=\"m_8763434762232736854paragraph\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><span class=\"m_8763434762232736854normaltextrun\">Sudaraka\u00a0\u2018s father\u2019s Production of Hunuwataye\u00a0Kathawa\u00a0had begun as a play in year 1967 when Sudaraka\u00a0was not born. About five kids had portrayed that role which was sans any dialogues. Sudaraka\u00a0Had been the fifth\u00a0Ladaru\u00a0Micheal\u00a0Kumaru\u00a0in the play. The play which is still staged the Micheal\u00a0Kumaraya\u00a0is the 18<\/span><span class=\"m_8763434762232736854normaltextrun\"><sup>th<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"m_8763434762232736854normaltextrun\">\u00a0or so.Sudaraka\u00a0recollected that when he was very young, he was thrilled when the \u2018Natya\u201d bus arrived at their house to load\u00a0stage sets. He too loaded into the bus small items which he could barely carry.He\u00a0recollected the journey in the bus which the crew travelled as adorable where the actors and actresses sang and displayed comic items.Sudarak\u00a0recollected there had been an elderly person to look after him who was addressed as \u2018Amme\u2019.Sudaraka\u00a0did confess that he had memorized the lyrics of the play as time progressed.There\u00a0were times as he grew when someone was absent, he was asked by father to portray a role. Of course, Sudaraka\u00a0recollects he had also took\u00a0part in chorus singing.<\/span><span class=\"m_8763434762232736854eop\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/b0dnqWrFkBE\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p class=\"m_8763434762232736854paragraph\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><span class=\"m_8763434762232736854normaltextrun\">Sudaraka\u00a0is the only child of the legendary duo Henry and Manel Jayasena was educated at D.S\u00a0Senanayake College ,Colombo\u00a0initially lived at Flower Lane Nugegoda .His\u00a0wife Anoma Jayasena nee Herath\u2019s ancestral place was Kandy.Her\u00a0father employed as a Police officer was on a transferable service.She\u00a0had studied in the Montessori at Welimada\u00a0then up to grade three in Nugathalawa\u00a0close to Welmada\u00a0thereafter she had studied in Kandy at Pushpadana\u00a0Balika Vidyalaya .By\u00a0sheer quirk she gets an opportunity to portray a lead role in a teledrama Golu Hadawatha.One\u00a0of Anoma\u2019s photos had got published in a Sinhalese newspaper.Sumithra\u00a0Pieris having seen it had sent a letter to her to come and meet her.After\u00a0having faced to three interviews Anoma had been selected to portray the role of Dhammi\u00a0in the proposed Golu Hadawatha\u00a0teledrama to play \u00a0the\u00a0role which Anula Karunatilleke\u00a0did in the film released in year 1968 as Dhammi.This unique opportunity for any young girl was indeed massive. The strange thing is Anoma had added that she had not read the book or seen the film, only at the interview she had known of it.She\u00a0added that it was a huge challenge for an absolute novice ,also\u00a0had feared to participate.<\/span><span class=\"m_8763434762232736854eop\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p class=\"m_8763434762232736854paragraph\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><span class=\"m_8763434762232736854normaltextrun\">During this period while studying at D.S\u00a0Senanayake College Sudaraka\u00a0had been involved in a College\u00a0carnival organising,where\u00a0it had been proposed to show some films to commemorate DS.Senanayke.The organisers had wanted to show some films in the auditorium.Sudaraka\u00a0had sought assistance from father who had spoken to Lester James Pieris had arranged for some film reels.Sudaraka\u00a0had visited Lester James Pieris\u2019s residence with mother Manel Jayasena in father\u2019s 5 Sri Moriis minor car.Before\u00a0they left Madam Sumithra Pieris had said she is planning to do a teledrama would you like to portray a role to which Sudaraka\u00a0had nodded showing no dissent. She had said Sudaraka\u00a0will have to subjected to a screen test etc.Sudaraka\u00a0had told\u00a0about this story to father Henry Jayasena who had said do not take this seriously as this may or not \u00a0happen\u00a0just be yourself.Anyway\u00a0after about three months Madam Sumithra \u00a0had\u00a0 contacted him.Sudaraka\u00a0had been asked to read a few lines from the script in front of a camera which he had done properly to convince her. After three days Sudaraka\u00a0had been conveyed the fantastic news that he had been selected,<\/span><span class=\"m_8763434762232736854eop\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ya1Izppu564\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p class=\"m_8763434762232736854paragraph\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><span class=\"m_8763434762232736854normaltextrun\">\u00a0Sudaraka\u00a0had seen Anoma \u00a0(\u00a0Sugath and Dhammi) \u00a0at the Mahurat ceremony held at a HNB branch,.The\u00a0shooting had taken place in \u00a0Piliyandala\u00a0Madhya Maha Vidyalaya,.For\u00a0the reproduction of Golu Hadawatha\u00a0portrayed by two versatile acclaimed duo Wickrema\u00a0Bogoda\u00a0and Anula Karunatilleke.The\u00a0shooting had taken place while the school was functioning not on a holiday period for the very reason that a few school girls and boys had been deployed for certain screen captures. Sudarak\u00a0and some boys were housed in the school itself while Anoma and other school girls had been housed in a boarding house in the close vicinity. The duo during shooting had to get up early dressed in the relevant school uniforms by the time the students arrived in school ,the\u00a0situation Sudaraka\u00a0termed as \u2018sundarai. It should be mentioned that several future versatile actors and actresses\u00a0had portrayed roles like Sangeetha Weeraratne,Roshan\u00a0Pilapitiya,<wbr \/>Channa\u00a0Perera,Ruwanthi\u00a0<wbr \/>Mangala.Nalin\u00a0Mapitiya\u00a0who had been a student in Piliyandala\u00a0Central had also portrayed a role.The\u00a0shooting had gone on for just over three months which had commenced\u00a0after Sudaraka\u00a0had sat for his advanced level examination. The last scene shot was that in\u00a0a carnival scene at Royal College where they had a carnival.After\u00a0the Golu Hadawatha\u00a0was telecast all audiences had come to know who Dhammi\u00a0and Sugath were.<\/span><span class=\"m_8763434762232736854eop\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><u><\/u><u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p class=\"m_8763434762232736854paragraph\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><span class=\"m_8763434762232736854normaltextrun\">Usually after a teledrama is shot and telecast the actors and actresses\u00a0disperse.However\u00a0in this instance case the duo Sudarak\u00a0and Anoma had been offered jobs by the producer of Golu Hadawatha\u00a0at the prestigious Hatton National Bank Ltd. Sudaraka\u00a0and Anoma were posted to two different branches the former at head office the latter at the Bambalapitiya\u00a0branch.The\u00a0duo had been talking to each other over the phone. As everyone knows there were no mobile phones then in the early decade of 1990.During a telephone call it was suggested that the duo should buy a present to the legends Lester James Pieris and Sumithra Pieirs\u00a0after receiving their first salaries.At\u00a0that time Anoma had been lodging at her Loku\u00a0Amma\u2019s place in Kalutara.The\u00a0duo had met at Kollupitiya\u00a0to visit Liberty Plaza to buy a present as arranged.After\u00a0which the duo had enjoyed a milk shake\u00a0drink.It\u00a0was added that during shooting an assistant director had strongly warned and advised all artistes\u00a0to behave well as it was a school where discipline had to be maintained to unprecedented tall heights.Still\u00a0the duo had not been to convey what was stored in the minds. Sudaraka\u00a0had been subsequently\u00a0transferred to a new branch in Rajagiriya\u00a0which was sans a land phone.The\u00a0manager had been provided with a \u2018celltell\u201d termed \u2018gadol\u00a0bage\u2019.\u00a0Hence it was simply impossible to take a call to Anoma.Sudaraka used to visit a communication next to the branch after lunch daily to call Anoma.\u00a0It was during this time Sudaraka\u00a0had conveyed about his love to which Anoma had asked to give her three days.But\u00a0owing to the anxiety before the three days Sudaraka\u00a0had asked for a word though he knew it was already a foregone decision and conclusion. The duo had lived only for six months with the parents had shifted to a separate dwelling as it was prudent to commence\u00a0a family early.The\u00a0duo are blessed with two sons aged twenty \u00a0four\u00a0and twenty one\u00a0 are\u00a0married for twenty eight\u00a0years.The\u00a0duo admitted that like all other families they too \u00a0have\u00a0arguments and quarrels.Anoma\u00a0quipped that she remains\u00a0silent when Sudaraka\u00a0loses temper.Sudaraka\u00a0accused Anoma for not talking for days after such a conflict. Sudaraka\u00a0conveyed that he used to emulate his parents which he had experienced when he was a bachelor. They too like others have their ups and downs.Sudaraka\u00a0says if he is satisfied sixty percent of his wishes come through for which \u00a0he\u00a0is overwhelmed. However, they duo is having a contented family life.The sons have taken part in grandfather\u00a0Henry Jayasena\u2019s plays as the little prince but although they have talent the duo does not like to pursue a career. The two had acted in \u00a0roles\u00a0in stage plays like \u2018Thawath\u00a0Udesanak\u201d of Henry Jayasena, where the younger son had portrayed the main character.\u00a0The elder son had participated\u00a0in a documentary of Sigiriya Kassapa\u00a0but had not prolonged a career in acting. Sudaraka\u00a0owing to his busy office schedules as an executive officer had participated\u00a0in a few minor portrayals in a few films but he too had not pursued a career.
