\u201cSukho Buddhanam uppado \u2013 sukha Saddhamma desana\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHappy is the arising of the Buddhas \u2013 Happy is the teaching of the Dhamma\u201d\u00a0(Dhammapada \u2013 Buddha Vagga \u2013 verse 16)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Having lived in the Tusitha heaven the Bodhisattva was reborn among the humans, receiving the name \u2018Siddhartha\u2019, which means \u2018One who renders a noble service to the world\u2019. His mother was Queen Mahamaya and His father was King Suddhodana. Prince Siddhartha\u2019s Birth, Enlightenment and Relinquishment or Maha Parinirvana (the Great Demise) took place on a Vesak Full Moon Day. These three memorable events that happened to take place in the life of this great personality are known as \u2018the three hallowed events\u2019 in His life.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Bodhisattva\u2019s appearance in the human plane took place attributing to the fulfilment of five conditions namely time, country, and continent, race and mother. Soon after His birth, He is said to have stepped over the petals of seven lotus flowers. History records that thereupon the little prince had exclaimed,<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI am the chief in the world, There is no equal to me, I am Supreme; this is my last birth; No rebirth for me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Rejoicing over this occasion King Suddhodana summoned several erudite scholars to the palace. They were asked to predict the future of the little prince. Most of them held the opinion that the prince would either become \u2018a great monarch\u2019 and rule over the country or renounce worldly life and become \u2018a Buddha\u2019. However, the youngest scholar called \u2018Kondanna\u2019 announced enthusiastically that the prince would certainly become \u2018a Buddha\u2019 and it happened just as he predicted.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is said that through a very long period of countless aeons of time, the Bodhisattva, the Buddha-to-be had earnestly cultivated \u2018Paramis\u2019 (Perfections) in order to attain supreme enlightenment and become \u2018Samma Sambuddha\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

Arts and skills<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Since childhood Prince Siddhartha showed compassion and kindness to all living beings. He was clever in mastering various kinds of arts and skills too. At the age of sixteen, Prince Siddhartha got married to a princess called Yasodara. In course of time, she gave birth to a little prince and he was given the name \u2018Rahula\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

One day, the sight of four signs made Prince Siddhartha feel disillusioned about worldly life. They were an old man, a sick person, a corpse and a mendicant. Consequently, at the age of twenty-nine, Prince Siddhartha\u2019s \u2018Great Renunciation\u2019 took place on an Asela Full Moon Day. During His quest for truth, He came across the religious teachers Alara Kalama and Uddakaramaputta. The hermit \u2018Siddhartha\u2019 spent a period of about six long years in the forest practising \u2018self-mortification\u2019 but to no avail.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the age of thirty-five, \u2018Gautama Siddhartha\u2019 realized Supreme Enlightenment, the ultimate truth and highest bliss, and became a Buddha through His own genuine efforts. In His first sermon, the Buddha instructed the first five disciples Kondanna, Vappa, Bhaddiya, Mahanama and Assaji that one should avoid the two extremes \u2018Self-mortification\u2019 and \u2018Self-indulgence\u2019 which yield more Dukkha, are ignoble and futile, but adhere to the Middle Path, which is also known as the Noble Eight-fold Path if one is to liberate oneself from all kinds of Dukkha and bondages.<\/span><\/p>\n

Holding on to things that are pleasing and enticing is the dominant nature of the human mind. But, however pleasing and attractive these physical phenomena may be, they are impermanent, that is subject to change and not long lasting. This is the ultimate or absolute truth. The ordinary worldly being (puthujjana) holds on to these fleeting objects due to \u2018craving\u2019 or \u2018desire\u2019. Thus a puthujjana may try to satisfy his\/her senses by grasping or holding on; but when these physical phenomena change, he\/ she may fail to satisfy or please them quite contradictory to one\u2019s expectations. This is Dukkha: the unsatisfactory nature of life.<\/span><\/p>\n

The cause of this so-called Dukkha is \u2018craving\u2019 as mentioned above. \u2018Craving\u2019 (Tanha) is three-fold: Kama Tanha (Craving for sensual pleasures), Bhavatanha (Craving for existence) and Vibhavatanha (Craving for non-existence).<\/span><\/p>\n

Non-attachment<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The end of Dukkha is gaining insight into the true nature of things through the practice of generosity, non-clinging, letting go and non-attachment.<\/span><\/p>\n

The path that leads to the end of Dukkha is the Noble eight-fold Path or the Middle Path. The eight factors of the Noble Eight-fold Path are as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n

Right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness and right samadhi (unification of the mind).<\/span><\/p>\n

The Buddha is also known as the peerless physician (bhisakkho<\/em>), the supreme surgeon (sallakattoanuttaro<\/em>). He indeed is an unrivalled healer.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Buddha\u2019s method of exposition of the Four Noble Truths is comparable to that of a physician. As a physician, He first diagnosed the illness, next He discovered the cause or the arising of the illness, and then He considered its removal, and lastly applied the remedy.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Truth the Blessed One realized and discovered thus through His own endeavours, is deep and hard to perceive, but yet simple. The Gautama Buddha expounded the Dhamma to people from all walks of life solely out of Great Compassion and concern to relieve their worries, troubles and sufferings. In this manner, He engaged Himself tirelessly and with utter dedication for a period of nearly forty-five years.<\/span><\/p>\n

Great teachings<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The Four Noble Truths, Dependent Origination, The Law of Kamma are the basic tenets of Buddhism: the great teachings of the Gautama Buddha. The Buddha has taught the Buddhist monk how to live happily and realize the Four Noble Truths and the lay disciple as well how to be happy, realize the Four Noble Truths and lead a successful household life.<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0Dasa Dhamma Sutta<\/em>\u00a0(Discourse on The Ten Dhammas) is an important discourse meant for Buddhist monks whereas a devout lay-disciple would find the teachings found in\u00a0Karaniya Metta Sutta<\/em>\u00a0(The Discourse on Loving-Kindness),\u00a0Maha Mangala Sutta<\/em>\u00a0(The Discourse on Blessings),\u00a0Parabhava Sutta<\/em>\u00a0(The Discourse on Downfall) and\u00a0Vasala Sutta<\/em>\u00a0(The Discourse on outcasts) to name a few, useful and helpful so as to improve his\/ her lifestyle. The\u00a0Maha Satipatthana Sutta\u00a0<\/em>(The Discourse on the Establishing of Mindfulness) is a discourse important for both monks and the laity.<\/span><\/p>\n

The supremacy of the Four Noble Truths in the teaching of the Buddha is abundantly clear from the message of the Sinsapa Grove as from the message of the Deer Park:<\/span><\/p>\n

Once, the Blessed One was living in the Sinsapa Grove at Kosambi (near Allahabad). Then, gathering a few Sinsapa leaves in His hand, the Blessed One addressed the monks:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you think monks, which is greater in quantity, the handful of Sinsapa leaves gathered by me or what is in the forest overhead?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNot many, trifling, venerable sir, are the leaves in the handful gathered by the Blessed One; many are the leaves in the forest overhead.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEven so, monks, many are those things I have fully realized, but not declared unto you; few are the things I have declared unto you.<\/span><\/p>\n

And why, monks, have I not declared them? They, monks, are not useful, are not essential to the life of purity, they do not lead to disgust, to dispassion, to cessation, to tranquillity, to full understanding, to full Enlightenment, to Nibbana. That is why, monks, they are not declared by me\u2026.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Just before His passing away, the Buddha admonished His chief attendant monk Venerable Ananda Thera that both monks and lay disciples should regard the entire teaching taught by Him as their own teacher.<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the noteworthy and remarkable occurrences in the life of the Buddha is that the three hallowed events in His life happening to take place under \u2018a tree\u2019. Little Prince Siddhartha was born under a \u2018Sal\u2019 tree. The Hermit Siddhartha, having eradicated all the defilements of the mind attained supreme enlightenment and became \u2018Samma Sambuddha\u2019 under a \u2018Pipal\u2019 (Asatu) tree. This tree is now well-known as \u2018Bodhi\u2019 tree. The \u2018Maha Parinirvana\u2019 of the Buddha took place at the twin Sala Trees of the Mallas at Kusinara (in modern Uttara Pradesh about 120 miles North-East of Benares).<\/span><\/p>\n

After all, we would be able to experience, endure and enjoy the real essence of the Dhamma, the Doctrine expounded by the Blessed One, only by applying its principles into our daily lives to the best of our abilities.<\/span><\/p>\n

Most importantly, the teaching of all the Buddhas is:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNot to do any evil \u2013 to cultivate good<\/span><\/p>\n

To purify the mind \u2013 this is the teaching of all the Buddhas\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

To conclude the parting words of the Gautama Buddha are as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cVaya Dhammasankhara \u2013 appamadena sampadetha\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTransient are all component things \u2013 strive with diligence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
