The Cliff-hanger Match at Khettarama: Reflections \u2026. the Day After-by Michael Roberts<\/span><\/h1>\n

The fourth ODI held at Khettarama on the June, as we know, was magnificent match \u2026and a cliff-hanger. With the benefit of a night\u2019s sleep, I can venture on a more considered commentary.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cricket is a great leveller is it not!! The skipper\u00a0Dasun Shanaka\u00a0<\/strong>had jolted the world with a heroic innings of the Maxwell variety in the second ODI at Palleakele. But, here, at Khettarama in the 4th<\/sup>\u00a0ODI, he proved to be a lemon: running between the wickets like a novice \u2026. with the first run taken in a dawdling manner, he was run-out at a crucial time.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Then, with a bowler Matthew Kuhnemann at No 10 facing the 50th<\/sup>\u00a0over and a target of 18 more runs to make, Shanaka chose to take the ball himself rather than opting for Karunaratne, Vandersay or Wellalage. A toss-up that choice \u2026 but one that was to Kuhnemann\u2019s liking: in a brave and inventive manner Kuhnemann carved several boundary hits and had only another four to make for a tie in the sixth ball.\u00a0<\/strong>He failed this time, but it was final over that was near disaster for Sri Lanka.<\/span><\/p>\n

So, it was touch and go at that moment. Shanaka nearly had egg smearing his face.<\/span><\/p>\n

HEROES MANY<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Sri Lanka had numerous heroes this day, not just Charith Asalanka \u2014 who was adjudicated \u201cMan of the Match\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0first HERO in my queue of heroes was\/is Dhananjaya de Silva<\/strong>\u00a0whom I would have chosen as Man of the Match because of his critical bowling work which brought him\u00a02 wkts for 39 runs at a rate of 3.90<\/strong>\u00a0(the best rate in the side) to backup his\u00a060 runs in 61 balls at a stage when the side was facing disaster.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The second HERO was\u00a0Charith Asalanka<\/strong>, centurion and a supporting bowler,<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Third, perhaps unnoticed, was\u00a0Niroshan Dickwella\u00a0whose stumping of David Warner \u2013<\/strong>then on 99 runs mind you \u2013\u00a0off Dhananjay\u2019s bowling was not only magnificent, but out of this world for speed and efficiency<\/strong>\u00a0\u2026. And thereby an act that buoyed the whole team at a critical juncture.<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course, it takes more than three to win a match and Jeffrey Vandersay, Wanindu Hasaranga and Mahesh Theekshana had critical inputs as well.<\/span><\/p>\n

All in all, it was a pulsating match<\/strong>. The Aussies were party to this impact as well \u2026. None more so than the previously unsung KUHNEMANN who unleashed inventive strokes in dire circumstances.<\/span><\/p>\n
