This picture brought back memories. I knew Ashton Agar\u2019s Great Grandfather from way back in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka).\u00a0Mr. Plunkett<\/strong>\u00a0worked at Walker Sons & Co Ltd as a car salesman and resided at Negombo.\u00a0He had two daughters Sheila and Carmaline. (Bubbles). Sheila was married to Nala Hewawissa and Carmaline to Ron Forbes<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the 1950\u2019s the Demetagoda Christian Guild Recreation Club as a fund raiser organised its Annual September Dance at the Colombo Town Hall and the main attraction was the selection of the \u201cQueen of the September Dance.\u201d In 1957 the panel of Judges were Dr. P.R. Thiagarajah, Mr & Mrs Rajagopal, Mrs. Sita Parakrama, Mr Livy Wijemanne.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

It was a difficult decision to arrive at and finally\u00a0Mrs. Sheila Hewawissa was adjudged \u201cQueen of the 1957 September Dance\u201d.<\/strong>\u00a0 The runners-up were Mrs Joan Gilles (nee Craggs) and Miss Carmine Cooke. She received a handsome Silver Cup presented by popular showman Mr. A.R. Adam and a beautiful bouquet of flowers.<\/span><\/p>\n

The band in attendance was Mario Manricks & His Swingtette. The Compere for the night was Mr. Vernon Corea.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Hewawissa\u2019s and Forbes\u2019s migrated to Australia. In Melbourne Carmaline and Ron took a keen interest in the Ceylon Welfare Organisation. Sadly, they have all departed, but leave happy and pleasant memories.<\/span><\/p>\n

A PERTINENT APPENDIX from EARLSON FORBES in Sydney, 27 June 2022:<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

\u201cExtending Charles Schokman\u2019s narrative on Ashton Agar\u2019s ancestry, let me say that \u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026 As Charles states, Ashton\u2019s Great Grandfather was a\u00a0\u2018Plunkett\u2019<\/strong>.\u00a0 The Plunketts are of Irish ancestry.\u00a0 Ashton\u2019s Great Grandmother was a \u2018Templer<\/strong>\u2019.\u00a0 The Templers are also from the UK, but I am unsure from which specific part of the UK.\u00a0 The Plunketts had 6 children: four girls and two boys.\u00a0 Sheila was the eldest of the children and she was of striking beauty.\u00a0 No surprise that she won the \u2018Queen of the 1957 September Dance\u2019, as Charles tells us.\u00a0 Nala and Sheila married and set up their beautiful home in Kirillapone.\u00a0\u00a0The marriage was unusual for the time.\u00a0 Nala, a Kandyan Sinhalese and staunch Buddhist, married Sheila, a Burgher Catholic<\/strong>. \u00a0Keep in mind their marriage occurred in the 1950s in Ceylon, when cultural and religious differences were still taboo in many quarters. \u00a0\u00a0Nala was employed at executive level at the Kolannawa Oil Installations. This resource was operated by the three major Oil Companies until 1964, when the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation took over.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Plunkett family migrated to Australia in stages.\u00a0 All but two of Sheila\u2019s siblings settled in Melbourne (two moved to Queensland).<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0Nala and Sheila stayed on in Ceylon at the family home in Kirillapone.\u00a0 With the passage of time\u00a0Nala and Sheila had four children; one of whom is Sonia, the mother of Ashton Agar<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0At or near Nala\u2019s retirement, the family migrated to Australia joining most of the Plunkett family in Melbourne.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0The rest of the Ashton Agar story is well documented and needs no addition.<\/span><\/p>\n

One last thing; Charles makes mention of one of Sheila\u2019s sisters,\u00a0Carmaline<\/strong>.\u00a0 Yes, Carmaline went on to achieve high honour as a social worker and volunteer.\u00a0 In her spare time, she organised entertainment, dinners and lunches for the less fortunate occupants of Aged Care Homes.\u00a0 So dedicated was Carmaline in this activity, that the residents as a gesture of gratitude nominated Carmaline for Australia Day Honour Awards.\u00a0 In recognition of her selfless work,\u00a0Carmaline was awarded the AO<\/strong>\u00a0(in the 1990s, in which specific year I cannot recall).<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
