Then Alavaka approached the Blessed One and said: &#8220;Get out, recluse (samana).&#8221; \u2014 &#8220;Very well, friend,&#8221; so saying the Blessed One went out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">&#8220;Come in, recluse.&#8221; \u2014 &#8220;Very well, friend,&#8221; so saying the Blessed One entered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">&#8220;Get out, recluse,&#8221; said Alavaka to the Blessed One a second time. \u2014 &#8220;Very well, friend,&#8221; so saying the Blessed One went out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">&#8220;Come in, recluse.&#8221; \u2014 &#8220;Very well, friend,&#8221; so saying the Blessed One entered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">&#8220;Get out, recluse,&#8221; said Alavaka to the Blessed One a third time. \u2014 &#8220;Very well, friend,&#8221; so saying the Blessed One went out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">&#8220;Come in, recluse.&#8221; \u2014 &#8220;Very well, friend,&#8221; so saying the Blessed One entered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">&#8220;Get out recluse,&#8221; said Alavaka to the Blessed One a fourth time. \u2014 &#8220;No, O friend, I will not get out. Do what you will.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">&#8220;I will ask you a question, recluse. If you do not answer me, I will confound your mind (thoughts), or cleave your heart, or take you by your feet and fling you over to the further shore of the ocean (para gangaya).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">&#8220;Well, friend, I do not see anyone in the world of Devas, Maras, Brahmas, or among the generation of recluses, brahmanas, deities, and humans, who could either confound my mind or cleave my heart, or take me by the feet and fling me over to the further shore of the ocean; nevertheless, friend, ask what you will.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">Then Alavaka addressed the Blessed One in verse:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">1. What wealth here is best for man?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">What well practiced will happiness bring?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">What taste excels all other tastes?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">How lived is the life they say is best?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">[The Buddha:]<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">2. Faith is the wealth here best for man;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">Dhamma well practiced shall happiness bring;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">Truth indeed all other tastes excels;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">Life wisely lived they say is best.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">[Alavaka:]<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">3. How does one the currents[1] cross?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">How is ocean&#8217;s[2] existence crossed?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">How is one&#8217;s suffering quelled?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">How is one purified?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">[The Buddha:]<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">4. By faith are currents crossed;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">By diligence is the ocean crossed;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">By effort is one&#8217;s suffering quelled;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">By wisdom is one purified;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">[Alavaka:]<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">5. How does one wisdom win?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">How does one wealth obtain?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">How does one come to fame?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">How does one friendship win?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">How does one without sorrow fare<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">When from this world to another he&#8217;s gone?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">[The Buddha:]<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">6. The mindful and discerning one,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">Who in the Dhamma plead his faith;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">By his will to hear that Dhamma<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">Wins the wisdom of Nibbana.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">7. Who is tactful and energetic,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">And gains wealth by his own effort;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">Fame will he acquire by truth,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">And friendship by his giving.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">8. He who has faith and is also truthful,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">virtuous, firm, and fond of giving;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">By virtue of these four conditions<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">Will never in the hereafter grieve.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">9. Truth and Restraint,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">Charity and Forbearance,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">Are the great reformers of man;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">If there be any better<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">Ask of other samanas and brahmanas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">[Alavaka:]<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">10. Why should I now try to ask<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">From other samanas and brahmanas<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">When this day I came to learn<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">What weal is here and hereafter?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">11. This for my weal indeed<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">The Buddha to Alavi came;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">A gift always bears a fruit;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">This too I learned today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">12. From village to village and town to town<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">I shall now wander along<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">Praising that Supreme Buddha<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">And the Dhamma well preached by him.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">Having thus spoken, Alavaka said to the Blessed One:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 16px;\">&#8220;Most excellent, O Gotama, is thy teaching, most excellent. Just as a man would set upright what is overturned, reveal what is concealed, point out the way to one gone astray, bring an oil lamp into the darkness so that those with eyes could see objects; even so the Dhamma (doctrine) has been declared in many a manner by the Venerable Gotama. I take refuge in the Venerable Gotama (the Buddha), in the Dhamma and in the Sangha (the Order).
