Sri Lanka\u2019s World Cup-winning captain and two-time winner of the Observer Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year award, Arjuna Ranatunga revealed how the late Australian spin great Shane Warne helped Sri Lanka rise to become a cricketing power in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) honoured Warne with an on-field commemoration and presentation for his family before the first Test between Australia and Sri Lanka played for the Murali-Warne trophy at the Galle International Cricket Stadium last week.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"Significantly, seven members of Sri Lanka\u2019s 1996 World Cup winning team Ranatunga, Aravinda de Silva, Muttiah Muralitharan and Kumar Dharmasena, Upul Chandana and Romesh Kaluwitharana who is a Sri Lankan selector of this series, were present at the tribute ceremony.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cInside the ground Warne was a tough character – we had our mouthfuls to say to each other. But I respected Warne a lot and he respected me a lot too. Sometimes you might have to say things that are something we learned from Australia. Mentally they knew how to push you down,\u201d Ranatunga said.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Muralitharan, the winner of Observer Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year in 1991, said at this stage SLC\u2019s \u2018tribute to Warne\u2019 is very important while the two teams battle for the Murali-Warne trophy. \u201cAfter 2004 tsunami, Warne became very close to the Sri Lankan people and his support was always highly appreciated.<\/span><\/p>\n

After his contribution all cricket lovers talked much about Warne. However, unfortunately he died at an unexpected time and today we commemorate him with my fellow cricket team members,\u201d Muralitharan said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe won\u2019t find the same type of Warne in present day cricket but sometimes more talented bowlers can be produced in future but there are many lessons they can get from bowler like Shane Warne,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, the Test match brought unhappy memories for Lankans as the home team lost by ten wickets in a home ground considered to be their happy hunting place. Sri Lanka now will have to win the second Test if they are to level the series one-all at the same venue.<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the excitement of school cricket will reach its climax when the 2021-2022 inter-school Under-19 season concludes with the big matches this month.<\/span><\/p>\n

School cricket\u2019s premier and the first inter-school awards show will be sponsored by the country\u2019s national mobile communication provider SLT Mobitel.<\/span><\/p>\n

The rich four-decade-old history of the Observer-Mobitel Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year contest has given that much-needed inspiration and motivation to the country\u2019s budding schoolboy cricketers to extend their playing careers beyond school level.<\/span><\/p>\n

There have been many outstanding players who aggregated over 1,000 runs or captured over 100 wickets during a season but only a few have taken such performances to the next level. Playing for a reputed club after ending their school careers and winning the Sri Lanka cap thereafter has been the dream of every schoolboy cricketer but only a handful would eventually fulfill that dream.<\/span><\/p>\n

After former Sri Lanka cricketer Thilan Samaraweera of Ananda College made it a clean sweep winning back to back titles in 1994 and 1995, it was Nimesh Perera of St. Sebastian\u2019s College, Moratuwa who was unanimously picked as Observer Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year 1996.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"When Nimesh Perera won the title in 1996, Sri Piyaratne Maha Vidyalaya, Padukka skipper Chandana Samarasinghe took away the Outstation Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year by the panel of umpires from the three umpiring associations – Association of Cricket Umpires Association (Sri Lanka), Central Province Cricket Umpires Association and Southern Province Cricket Umpires Association.<\/span><\/p>\n

Besides winning the top title, Nimesh Perera, who had a haul of over 100 wickets for the second successive year, also won the awards for the best bowler and was runner-up in the best all-rounder\u2019s category.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nimesh captured 130 wickets and in the following 1995-96 season, he had a haul of 134 wickets for 1605 runs which gave him an average of 11.97 a piece in the 1994-95 season. He also batted well to collect 764 runs.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nimesh was runner-up in the Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year award to Tilan Samaraweera of Ananda for the second time in 1995.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, Samaraweera\u2019s dream of becoming the Observer Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year which would have been for the third successive year was foiled by Nimesh.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"Nimesh Perera became the Observer Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year in 1996 while Tilan Samaraweera became the runner-up. Samaraweera, however, kept the title of best all-rounder which he won in 1995 and Nimesh was runner-up in the previous year.<\/span><\/p>\n

It was nice to see Trinity College and St. Benedict\u2019s College among the winners in that year. Kumar Sangakkara of Trinity, who went on to captain Sri Lanka with distinction, was picked as the best batsman, while Benedictine Pradeep Hewage was picked as the best fielder in the All-Island Contest. Trinity was also picked as the best team in the Central Province.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nimesh Perera, who was the first cricketer from St. Sebastian\u2019s to become the Observer Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year, is another player to gain recognition for his performances on the Sri Lanka \u2018A\u2019 tour of England in 1999. In 1996 he had shattered all of Muttiah Muralitharan\u2019s school records.<\/span><\/p>\n

He was an aggressive and adventurous left-handed batsman in the middle\/lower order and a capable leg spin bowler. Perera began the Sri Lanka \u2018A\u2019 tour with a blistering 110 unbeaten and then went on to capture 4 for 25 as Sri Lanka \u2018A\u2019 defeated an England CB XI.<\/span><\/p>\n

He was a member of Upal Chandana\u2019s Sri Lanka squad for the Aiwa Cup tournament but he did not play a single match. His performances in the following tour matches against the Australians were a let-down culminating in him being excluded from the pool of players for the Sharjah tournament.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is heartening to see the Mega Show completing its 43th anniversary last year. Most importantly, the country\u2019s national mobile service provider has been associated with Sri Lanka\u2019s first-ever school cricket awards show for 15 years.<\/span><\/p>\n

Together with Sri Lanka Telecom and SLT Mobitel management, is extending the fullest support to make the \u2018Mother of all Shows\u2019 a resounding success once again as it continues to remain the dream of every schoolboy cricketer.<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, voting for the Observer-Mobitel Most Popular School Cricketers of the Year contests are moving at a brisk pace.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hence, it\u2019s high time to support your alma mater by voting for your favorite schoolboy cricketer and motivate the next generation of cricketers. It will be a morale booster for those outstanding young cricketers as the cream of players are preparing to enter the club arena with the hope of proudly wearing that Sri Lanka cap eventually.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is good to discover that several others too have followed the Sunday Observer\u2019s initiative to hold similar awards shows to reward the achievements of schoolboy cricketers after every season. But the \u2018Observer Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year\u2019 remains the \u2018Mother of all Shows\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

Needless to say how important it is for schoolboy cricketers to win an award as recognition for their commendable achievements after a strenuous season. It is not just appreciating their achievements but also a big inspiration for them to step into the big league.<\/span><\/p>\n

All past winners of this prestigious title have repeatedly said what a big inspiration the award had been to their cricketing careers. Since its humble beginnings at the Nawaragahala in 1978\/79, the \u2018Observer Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year\u2019 contest has gone from strength to strength and will continue to prosper.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
