“THE KELLY CLAN” \u2013 by Des Kelly<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

The story of Matthew (Matt) Kelly is extremely interesting to me, in that, for starters, the photograph of Matt, as a young man, reminds me of my late dad, Carlo, who, like me, were born in Ceylon (1910, & 1936.)<\/span><\/p>\n

My grandfather John Robert (Jack)<\/span><\/p>\n

was born in Dublin, migrating to Ceylon during the early 1900’s, to marry my grandmother, a very pretty young Marion Foenander, who, in turn, had two daughters, Doreen & Marion, plus one son, Robert Carl (Carlo), my beloved late dad.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

However, to get back to Matt., without any doubt, would have been the son of (hoping I recall his name correctly), James,\u00a0 brother of<\/span><\/p>\n

my grandfather Jack, who preferred to remain in Dublin, to carry on working as the Manager of the very famous Dublin Zoo, of that era.<\/span><\/p>\n

Matthew Kelly did not have an easy life, as the story goes, but the fact remains that “THE KELLY CLAN”,are all true animal-lovers who cannot bear to see ANY animal or bird, reptile or even insect hurt or killed unnecessarily. They are ALL God’s creatures, and I am very proud to say that my own three sons and one daughter feel exactly as I do.<\/span><\/p>\n

None of us are vegetarians personified, BUT!!, as long as the animals & birds concerned, are slaughtered HUMANELY, this is all I AM CONCERNED WITH.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Matt Kelly – Head Keeper 1945 – 1965<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Matt Kelly was born in Dublin into a family of zoo keepers.\u00a0 His grandfather and father were keepers at Dublin Zoo, and Matt and his brother Thomas followed them into the profession.\u00a0 Matt started work at the Dublin Zoo in 1930.\u00a0 He took up the post of Head Keeper at Belle Vue in 1945, and in many ways, he became the face of the zoo over the following 30 years.\u00a0 During the 50s and 60s he was instrumental in moving the zoo away from its Victorian roots and in introducing a wide variety of animals that he gathered in three expeditions to Africa.\u00a0 He wrote regular articles in local newspapers and always encouraged the wider community to become involved in the work of the zoo.\u00a0 He reckoned, that between them, the Kelly’s had spent a total of 228 years as zoo keepers.<\/span><\/p>\n

His time at the zoo was far from uneventful.\u00a0 He was kicked by an elephant, butted by a bison and almost lost his index finger to a crocodile who was after the fish Matt was holding.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn 1946 the day before one of his daughters was born Matt had a close encounter with an adder.\u00a0 The snake slipped out of Matt\u2019s grip and sank its fangs into his middle finger.\u00a0 He made a tournoquet with his handerkerchief – told Gerald Iles, the zoo director not to tell his pregnant wife about the accident and set off to the Royal Infirmary.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the only serum needed to treat the poison was at the London Zoo, so the police were asked to go on an emergency run to retrieve it.\u00a0 Getting the serum also involved getting the London Zoo\u2019s vet back from the cinema.\u00a0 In the meantime the poison had paralized one side of Matt\u2019s body and was affecting his vision.\u00a0 It took 12 hours to get the serum to Manchester, but after it was administered, he gradually regained his sight and the pain subsided enough that, against medical advice, he could get dressed and take a taxi home to see his expectant wife.\u00a0 He was just in time because his daughter was born soon after his arrival.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

Matt made three trips to Africa to collect animals for the zoo.\u00a0 In 1960 he returned from Mombassa with a collection of 38 animals, but he came back in plaster after falling down a 5 foot deep car servicing pit and breaking 2 ribs and fracturing a third.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the end it was his love of animals that actually ended his career.\u00a0 He acquired a respitory disease from a parrot that hospitalized him for weeks and left him with a collapsed lung.\u00a0 He retired in 1975.\u00a0 At that time he said, \u201cI\u2019ve certainly led a full life and now I\u2019m looking forward to a bit of peace and quiet at home.\u00a0 But I wouldn\u2019t have swopped my job for anything.\u00a0 You never knew what was going to happen next.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/div>\n

\nHe probably had no idea how prophetic those words would be.\u00a0 Eighteen months later the Kelly\u2019s were served with an eviction notice on the house that they believed they had been allowed to stay in, rent free, for life.\u00a0 Matt claimed that he had been given that assurance at the time of his retirement by Mr. Kenneth Andrews the area manager for the company that owned Belle Vue.\u00a0 However, the company disputed Matt\u2019s claim and proceeded with the legal procedure to evict Matt and his wife Helen.\u00a0 Fortunately, on the day of the court case Matt received an offer of a new council house in Eldin Close in Longsight, not far from the zoo so he relinquished his claim on Bamford House that had been the family home.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn 1981 Matt was prominent in the campaign to prevent the closure of Belle Vue and its proposed conversion into a Wimpy housing estate.\u00a0 The media dubbed the campaigners \u201cKelly\u2019s Heroes\u201d.\u00a0 As we know, this was a fight that Matt and his supporters lost.\u00a0 It was in 1981 at the age of 71 that Matt Kelly died.\u00a0 He left behind his wife Helen, two daughters and three sons.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
