When Sharon Johal was growing up, she didn\u2019t see any kids who looked like her on TV. But that didn\u2019t stop the\u00a0third-generation Indian-Australian from dreaming of a life on screen.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Her mum and dad\u00a0though, had other ideas.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

\u201cMy parents literally gave me a list of things I could be,\u201d she told SBS News laughing. \u201cA doctor, a pharmacist, a lawyer, or a dentist. It was \u2018that\u2019s what you\u2019re going to do, we\u2019re working so hard for you so you can have this opportunity.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

Johal, 31, grew up in\u00a0Berri, in South Australia\u2019s beautiful, isolated Riverland, but her family’s ties to the country stretched back further.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Johal\u2019s Punjabi grandparents first came\u00a0to Queensland cutting sugar cane. They took their earnings and returned to India. Her mother spent the first 12 years of her childhood in India before the family returned. They were\u00a0among the first Indian families to settle in\u00a0South Australia.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
It was not an easy adjustment; Johal’s mother told her their brown skin was so unfamiliar to her classmates at the time that she was often mistaken for an Indigenous person.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

As her mother grew up and had her own family, like many migrants, Johal\u2019s parents saw better opportunities for their children if they made sacrifices to stay in Australia. It meant Johal, her older sister and younger brother, were keenly aware of parental expectations.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s a massive cultural expectation being of Indian heritage,\u201d Johal said. \u201cYou\u2019ve got that added expectation \u2013 we\u2019re very privileged people, I should say \u2013 but because our parents came out to give us a better life, for us kids, it\u2019s like we lived their journey of what they wanted us to be and do.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\u201cIt was difficult because I always had that creative side, I always wanted to do acting. When I was really little I was always putting on shows, trying to get everyone to watch. It might be a middle child thing, \u2018look at me, I want to be the centre of attention!\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Now based in Melbourne, (Neighbours is filmed in the\u00a0suburb of Vermont) Johal\u2019s solution was to work hard and follow both dreams; her parents\u2019 and her own. She got the marks at school\u00a0in dentistry and law, choosing to pursue law at Adelaide University \u201cbecause I thought it was the closest thing to acting\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
She spent years working as a commercial and litigation lawyer, doing acting classes and auditions on weekends. Opportunities for ethnically diverse actors were few and far between.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Her fianc\u00e9 Ankura Dogra, an accountant, told SBS News \u201cthe fact that there wasn\u2019t those main feature roles for her being of Indian background in Australia, that was the most difficult part.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
After a while, Johal says, \u201cWe weren\u2019t seeing (ethnically diverse actors) on TV in Australia, so … doing the due diligence we thought about where I could get work.\u201d She considered Bollywood. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Johal\u00a0applied for SBS reality TV show Bollywood Star where entrants competed in Mumbai to star in a Bollywood film. Against her expectations, she made it through to the final round, coming runner-up. But she didn\u2019t want to move to India, so she came home to Australia.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
She kept auditioning, kept missing out. \u201cThere\u2019s so many ethnic actors and only a few roles so you\u2019d get really close then miss out … I thought, ‘it\u2019s not going to happen.’\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
She went back to law, ready to give up on her dream, when the call came in 2016 that Neighbours was casting Indian actors. Now Johal plays Dipi Rebecchi on Australia\u2019s most successful and longest-running soap.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Rebecchi is one half of an interracial couple with two kids. While that might sound unremarkable in real life, the once exclusively Anglo-Celtic soap has been slow to reflect Australia\u2019s multicultural diversity. Johal sees her personal story as evidence of a much greater shift in Australian society.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s a want and need for that cultural change and I\u2019m really excited to be a part of it,\u201d she said. \u201cIf people see themselves on TV it makes them feel safer, there\u2019s people like me, that\u2019s like my family.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Her fiance too is pleased that diversity has finally entered Australian TV casting in recent years.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\u201cTV should be a true reflection of what\u2019s happening in society and in the community,\u201d he said. \u201cIt means different people can have role models of different ethnic backgrounds, that\u2019s why (it\u2019s important).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Johal\u2019s co-star Alan Fletcher, who has played Dr Karl Kennedy on the show for 23 years, admits mainstream TV has had a slow start in representing the real Australia.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\u201cI think a lot of the resistance to culturally diverse television was because of an aversion to risk. TV producers and the networks tend to say, \u2018hey we\u2019ll make what we know works\u2019, so they\u2019re reluctant to change,\u201d he told SBS News. \u201cBut what\u2019s happened is very quickly they\u2019ve discovered that … increasing cultural diversity in comedy and drama has been massively successful \u2026 so I think the producers are saying \u2026 ‘we need it because it\u2019s what people want.’\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
Johal says the fact she had the opportunity to pursue her dream, despite challenges along the way, is something she loves about Australia.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\u201cI didn’t set out to be a role model but if I could say anything, it\u2019s don\u2019t be afraid to speak about what you want to achieve and what you do want to do.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\u201cDon\u2019t listen to the naysayers, don\u2019t listen to people who tell you it’s impossible … I\u2019m an everyday Australian and I struggled and went through ups and downs like everyone else.
