The scorecard of St Joseph\u2019s College\u00a0cricket team of 1952 provides a classic\u00a0example of the standard of school\u00a0cricket in the bygone era. Results-wise<\/span>
\nit is not impressive. Nevertheless, it echoes something extraordinary. And it shows the attitude, approach and determination of schoolboy cricketers towards the game five or six decades back.<\/span><\/p>\n

Recounting the 1952 cricket season St\u2019\u00a0Joseph\u2019s College annual remarked:<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cIt was a season marked by the setting\u00a0<\/em>up of many new records for the school;<\/em><\/span>
\ne.g. the aggregate of runs made by the\u00a0<\/em>team exceeded 2590; there were three\u00a0<\/em>innings over 400, two over 300 and two\u00a0<\/em>over 200 runs.\u00a0<\/em>\u201cAll these mammoth scores were not\u00a0<\/em>recorded by stodgy play but by bright\u00a0<\/em>cricket. We won five matches by an\u00a0<\/em>innings, and even though we lost two by\u00a0<\/em>the margin of six wickets, we can feel<\/em><\/span>
\nconsoled by the fact that we did not\u00a0<\/em>take part in any \u2018tame draws\u2019.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The college annual further added:<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cThe season was one in which the team\u00a0<\/em>reached supreme heights of excellence\u00a0<\/em>and as quickly fell down to the depths.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

The school cricket scenario was\u00a0different at the time. Matches were\u00a0played over two afternoons \u2013 mostly\u00a0Friday and Saturday, commencing from\u00a0noon sometimes 1.30 or 2pm on the\u00a0first day and 9.30am on Saturday) to 6\u00a0pm, with stoppages for the milk interval\u00a0and tea. Although the hours of play\u00a0hours were less compared with\u00a0present-day school cricket \u2013 and also\u00a0the fixture list confined only to seven or\u00a0eight traditional matches \u2013 it provided\u00a0quality entertaining cricket; fierce\u00a0competitiveness; record totals;\u00a0challenging declarations and\u00a0memorable results. And whatever the\u00a0outcome, they fought courageously.<\/span>
\nDrawn games were few and far between. Led by Kenneth Serpanchy, with Rienzie Perera as deputy, the Josephian cricket team of 1952 was coached by Malcolm Spittel, one of the finest cricketers the Darley Rd school has produced. They began their season rather late \u2013 the first weekend of February with the match against Wesley College instead of the customary clash with St Benedict\u2019s.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBatting first on the Darley Rd matting\u00a0<\/em>wicket, the Wesleyites were all out for\u00a0<\/em>254 (M. A. M.\u00a0<\/em>Fuard\u00a059, L.\u00a0<\/em>Adihetty\u00a048 n.o., Ken Serpanchy 5 for 51). The\u00a0<\/em>Josephians\u00a0began disastrously, losing\u00a0<\/em>five\u00a0wickets for a paltry eight runs,\u00a0<\/em>Wesley skipper R. Claessen and young\u00a0<\/em>Samsudeen\u00a0producing a deadly spell of \u00a0<\/em>bowling. Being 20 for 5 at the end of\u00a0<\/em>first\u00a0day\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0play the home team was\u00a0<\/em>shot\u00a0out for 53 the following day.<\/em><\/span>
\nThe Josephian batsmen failed\u00a0<\/em>miserably\u00a0against the medium-pace\u00a0<\/em>bowling\u00a0of 14-year-old M.N.\u00a0<\/em>Samsudeen\u00a0(5 for 10) who opened the\u00a0<\/em>attack\u00a0with Claessen. St Joseph\u2019s fared\u00a0<\/em>better\u00a0in the second innings, but\u00a0<\/em>their\u00a0total\u00a0of 236 (Ken Serpanchy 62,\u00a0<\/em>Wilson Wimalaratne 38, Maurice\u00a0<\/em>Wanigaratne\u00a042) failed to stave off\u00a0<\/em>defeat. The Wesleyites thereafter\u00a0<\/em>stroked\u00a0the required runs to win by six\u00a0<\/em>wickets\u00a0(37 for 4; K.\u00a0<\/em>Serpanchy\u00a02 for\u00a0<\/em>7), just 15 minutes before the end.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

The second match of the 1952 season was against St Benedict\u2019s College, at\u00a0Kotahena.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\nSt.Joseph\u2019s:\u00a0Ken Serpanchy (captain),\u00a0Wilson Wimalaratne, Maurice\u00a0Wanigaratne, Lester Caspersz, Rienzie\u00a0Perera, Chrysantha Fernando, Thalath\u00a0Ismail, Mahinda de Silva, Milroy\u00a0Brohier, Roy Perera and Shirley Rangalla.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBatting first SJC amassed 358 in 260\u00a0<\/em>minutes\u00a0(M.\u00a0<\/em>Wanigaratne\u00a095, K.\u00a0<\/em>Serpanchy 63, Roy Perera 50, W.\u00a0<\/em>Wimalaratne\u00a043, M.\u00a0<\/em>Brohier\u00a049, M.\u00a0<\/em>Paul 3 for 79,\u00a0<\/em>H.\u00a0<\/em>Jayasekera\u00a03 for 60).\u00a0<\/em>At the close the Benedictine scoreboard\u00a0<\/em>read: 19 runs, 7 wickets. Fall of \u00a0<\/em>wickets: 0, 4, 10, 10, 10, 10 and 17.\u00a0<\/em>On the second day the Benedictines\u00a0<\/em>were\u00a0shot out for 37 (K.\u00a0<\/em>Serpanchy\u00a05\u00a0<\/em>for\u00a012, Chrys Fernando 3 for 4) and 76\u00a0<\/em>(K.\u00a0<\/em>Serpanchy\u00a04 for 29) which left the\u00a0<\/em>Josephians with a massive victory by\u00a0an innings and 245 run victory.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

During the following weekend the\u00a0Josephians hosted their first-ever\u00a0cricketing opponent Royal College.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cRoyal 74 (K.\u00a0<\/em>Serpanchy\u00a05 for 18, Roy\u00a0<\/em>Perera 3 for 21) and 79 (G. Seneviratne\u00a0<\/em>20, M.\u00a0<\/em>Brohier\u00a03 for 8 in 7 overs, K.\u00a0<\/em>Serpanchy\u00a03 for 20).\u00a0<\/em>St. Joseph\u2019s 467 for 9\u00a0<\/em>dec.\u00a0(Milroy<\/em><\/span>
\nBrohier\u00a0174 \u2013 in just over two hours,\u00a0<\/em>Roy Perera 92, M.\u00a0<\/em>Wanigaratne\u00a050 and\u00a0<\/em>Rienzie Perera 65).\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

St. Joseph\u2019s emerged victorious\u00a0<\/em>by\u00a0an\u00a0<\/em>innings\u00a0and 314 runs.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

The Josephian annual reported:\u00a0<\/em>\u201cWith two wins by an innings behind us,\u00a0<\/em>we\u00a0went on to play St. Thomas\u2019 College\u00a0<\/em>at\u00a0Mt. Lavinia\u201d. It was a thriller. At the\u00a0<\/em>end, the Thomians had to score 150\u00a0<\/em>runs\u00a0in about 140 minutes of playing\u00a0<\/em>time\u00a0remaining, and they secured a\u00a0<\/em>thrilling\u00a0victory in the last ball of the\u00a0<\/em>match.<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cSt. Joseph\u2019s 221 (K. Serpanchy 79, W.\u00a0Wimalaratne 65) and 89 (M.\u00a0Wanigaratne 37, Roy Perera 17, M.\u00a0Brohier 15, G. Geddes 4 for 17) lost to\u00a0St. Thomas\u2019 161 (K. Serpanchy 4 for\u00a048) and 150 for 4 (D. D. Keerthiratne 62\u00a0n.o., P.I. Peiris 42) by 6 wickets.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Century-Partnership\"<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Darley Rd grounds was set alight\u00a0by the Josephian batsmen in their\u00a0match against St. Anthony\u2019s College,\u00a0Katugastota, when they amassed 100\u00a0runs in just one hour,\u00a0150 in 90 minutes and 200 in just two\u00a0hours. Finally, they recorded a huge\u00a0total of 452 runs in 250 minutes. (SJC\u00a0452. W. Wimalaratne 92, Ken\u00a0Serpanchy 75, Milroy Brohier 55, Roy\u00a0Perera 66, Chrysantha Fernando 75,<\/em><\/span>
\nRalph Bolling 43 not out).<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

St. Anthony\u2019s lost their reliable opener\u00a0A.C.M. Lafir in the first ball of the\u00a0second over. Thereafter, Ronnie\u00a0Stephens and T. M. Deen carried the\u00a0innings up to 70 and remained unbeaten\u00a0at the end of day one. As the Antonians\u00a0were restricted for 143 (R. Stephens 48,\u00a0T.M. Deen 35, K. Serpanchy 3 for 59,\u00a0C. Fernando 3 for 12) and 219 (A.C.M.\u00a0Lafir 99, B. Weerakoon 53, M. Brohier\u00a04 for 69), St Joseph\u2019s won the match by\u00a0an innings and 90 runs.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

The Trinity\u2013St Joseph\u2019s match in 1952,\u00a0<\/em>played at Asgiriya is long remembered\u00a0for the mammoth total of 484 for 9\u00a0recorded by the Josephians in the first\u00a0afternoon of the match. Skipper\u00a0Serpanchy scored 145 and his deputy\u00a0Rienzie Perera stroked 170. On the\u00a0following day Trinity were bundled out\u00a0for scores of 81 and 81. According to\u00a0the Blue and White magazine,<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cTrinity thus suffered the biggest defeat\u00a0in its history, by and innings and 322\u00a0runs. In defeating Trinity College, we\u00a0stablished a record total for the\u00a0season \u2013 484 \u2013 beating the previous\u00a0best score of 467, also by us.\u201d\u00a0Then came the all-important<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Josephian\u2013Peterite match, being the\u00a018th encounter in the Battle of the<\/span>
\nSaints series. Respected cricket\u00a0historian Harold de Andrado reviewing\u00a0the match years later noted:<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cIn 1952, St Peter\u2019s and St Joseph\u2019s\u00a0had two of the strongest college teams\u00a0of the year and were led by two of the\u00a0leading Nondescript cricketers H.I.K.\u00a0Fernando and Ken Serpanchy who\u00a0had both done well in Saravanamuttu\u00a0Trophy cricket. Among the members\u00a0of both teams were names that were to\u00a0adorn first-class cricket in Ceylon in\u00a0the next ten years. The stage was set\u00a0for a grand game. St Peter\u2019s had a\u00a0splendid unbeaten record, trouncing\u00a0the powerful Thomians by an innings\u00a0and having the better of most of their\u00a0other games.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

St. Joseph\u2019s won the toss and took first\u00a0lease of the Nondescripts CC turf.\u00a0Josephian openers W. Wimalaratne\u00a0(105) and M. Wanigaratne (97)\u00a0established a new series record for the\u00a0first wicket of 197 runs, followed by\u00a0Ken Serpanchy 67, Rienzie Perera 2,\u00a0Roy Perera 28, Milroy Brohier 36,\u00a0Chrys Fernando 8, S. Rangalla 14 n.o.,\u00a0R.\u00a0Brohier\u00a02, T. Ismail01 and R.\u00a0Bolling 14 to extend the score to 382.\u00a0Patrick Muthumani took 4 for 48.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Peterite fielding was a bit ragged\u00a0in the face of the terrific onslaught\u201d\u00a0commented\u00a0<\/em>de\u00a0Andrado and he\u00a0singles out Peterite\u00a0<\/em>wicketkeeper\u00a0H.I.K. Fernando as \u201ceven at that time\u00a0proved to be Ceylon\u2019s No. 1 stumper\u201d.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

The Peterites ended the first day with\u00a024 for no loss. But on the next day,\u00a0Josephian leg-spinner Milroy Brohier\u00a0(5 for 21) ran through the Peterite<\/span>
\nbatting\u00a0line-up comfortably to rout the\u00a0opponents for just 96 runs. M. Pereira<\/span>
\n10, P.\u00a0Muthumani\u00a020, H.I.K. Fernando\u00a019, Denzil Abeysekera 5, Clive Inman\u00a09, H.\u00a0Ranasinghe\u00a03, T.\u00a0Wijesinghe\u00a00, H.\u00a0Wittachy\u00a04, H.A. Fernando 5, W.\u00a0Hoffman 6 and Maurice Salgadoe 2.\u00a0In the second\u00a0innings St\u00a0Peter\u2019s fared\u00a0even worse. Only Denzil Abeysekera\u00a0(22) and W. Hoffman (18) were able to\u00a0reach double figures in a total of just\u00a070 runs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThus St. Joseph\u2019s had won the 18th\u00a0encounter, St. Peter\u2019s suffering their\u00a0greatest defeat in the series, by an\u00a0innings and 216 runs. This match\u00a0marked the end of the season, and it\u00a0ended on a very sad note. The Prime<\/em><\/span>
\nMinister, Mr D.S.\u00a0<\/em>Senanayake\u00a0died on\u00a0Saturday morning (second day of the\u00a0match) and as a mark of respect to him\u00a0the prize distribution at the end of the<\/em><\/span>
\nmatch\u00a0was postponed,\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

remarked the Blue and White\u00a0magazine.<\/span><\/p>\n
