The numbers they land on are the topics they\u2019re given. This week, he talks to Ramesh Mario Nithiyendran. The Sri Lankan-born Australian artist, 33, is best known for his brightly-coloured ceramic figures, which have been shown in public galleries and last month at Vivid Sydney. His monograph,\u00a0<em>Ramesh<\/em>, is out now.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">SEX<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Was your family more concerned about you being queer or being an artist \u2013 or neither?\u00a0<\/strong>It was almost like it was lumped into one package. Part of the artist package was this idea of an unconventional lifestyle. It\u2019s quite confusing, for recent migrants especially, to understand how people with creative lifestyles can actually have stable incomes, flourish and be valued in society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>And was that package confronting for anyone?\u00a0<\/strong>It was totally confronting. Go to university, have some kind of STEM education, don\u2019t leave home until you can get a mortgage, then get married and have kids: that\u2019s the framework of success for a good Asian person. It\u2019s interesting. I also have an ongoing position at the University of NSW as a lecturer. When I was appointed there in 2017, it was like, \u201cOkay, he\u2019s been recognised by a sandstone university.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Are you partnered or single at the moment?\u00a0<\/strong>Single.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>And ready to mingle?\u00a0<\/strong>Yeah! Pretty much.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>What are three criteria you\u2019re looking for in a partner?\u00a0<\/strong>Ambitious. Interested in food \u2013 I can\u2019t do people who don\u2019t like food; what would I even do with them? [<em>laughs<\/em>] And chilled \u2013 because I\u2019m not!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>True or false: artists are good lovers.\u00a0<\/strong>True [<em>laughs<\/em>]. Lots of artists lack boundaries. Which sometimes translates well in the bedroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">POLITICS<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>\u201cAll art is political.\u201d Discuss.\u00a0<\/strong>So much art conforms to the status quo. And not every cultural object that comes out into the world reflects political and social environments. There is so much art that is completely orthodox. Just because it might be some weird performance doesn\u2019t make it challenging or progressive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>So in there I hear the implication that not all art is political\u2009\u2026\u2009but good art should be?\u00a0<\/strong>When I talk about these kinds of value terms \u2013 like \u201cgood\u201d and \u201cbad\u201d \u2013 it\u2019s just like a recipe to get cancelled [<em>laughs<\/em>]. Personally, I\u2019m interested in art that\u2019s authentic. Authentic expressions come from having interesting life experiences. And to make interesting art you have to be an interesting person. I\u2019m not saying you need to be some radical zealot. All I\u2019m saying is that you need to have some nuanced, interesting perspective on the world, and ideas, to be able to make interesting, engaging artwork. And most people don\u2019t.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"_1665V _2q-Vk\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-testid=\"body-content\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Does the idea of being cancelled make you anxious?\u00a0<\/strong>I\u2019m quite confident that my opinions aren\u2019t harmful. But I often have very critical opinions and it\u2019s important to be careful with how they\u2019re expressed, because there\u2019s a difference sometimes between what people say and what they mean. As an artist, you\u2019re making an artwork, not writing an essay. [Artworks] can be interpreted in ways that might become mobilised in a certain cultural or political or social climate, in a way that you didn\u2019t intend. So when I talk about being cancelled, I kind of say it in jest. You know what it\u2019s like: some days you might get an Instagram comment that\u2019s a death threat and you don\u2019t care. And on other days, they say, \u201cWhy does this thing look like a five-year-old did it?\u201d and you want to cry!<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_1665V _2q-Vk\" data-testid=\"body-content\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>How optimistic are you about how the arts will fare under this new federal government?\u00a0<\/strong>Of course I\u2019m more confident with this government, but I don\u2019t want to count my chickens. What I\u2019ve tried to think laterally about \u2013 or be open about \u2013 are things like private sponsorship and collaborations, because there\u2019s almost a sense that [art] is less ideological in that space.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>At the same time, corporate and philanthropic private donations can be fraught, right?\u00a0<\/strong>If I\u2019m going to accept government support, or work with a national or state institution, to fund my commission\u2009\u2026\u2009I\u2019m pretty sure the federal government is funding detention centres. So I don\u2019t understand how to be ethical when accepting support and money when I\u2019m making an artwork \u2013 and I\u2019m happy to acknowledge that. But also it\u2019s about the artwork that you can make with that support. I feel that there\u2019s power in visibility and presence.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\">DEATH<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>How do you feel about the idea of your artwork outliving you? A comfort or a kind of existential horror?\u00a0<\/strong>Oh my god, it\u2019s both. When I go into museums, a lot of trendy young people of colour are not into white male modernists \u2013 and rightly so. Matisse? Nup! Not interested. This is the sentiment. What\u2019s hard to deal with is understanding that in a couple of hundred years, I\u2019ll have these big installations in museums and young people will be like, \u201cNup!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>So it\u2019s not the idea of the work outliving you; it\u2019s the notion the work outlives you\u2009\u2026\u2009and becomes pass\u00e9.\u00a0<\/strong>Yeah, and it will! That\u2019s just the way it works. It\u2019ll become a historical record of a time \u2013 a record of sculptural practice from 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>When art becomes artefact.\u00a0<\/strong>Yeah! And I don\u2019t think it\u2019ll be that interesting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>How would you like to die?\u00a0<\/strong>Painlessly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>How would you not like to die?\u00a0<\/strong>Slowly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: #000000;\"><strong>Plan your funeral for me.\u00a0<\/strong>I don\u2019t want anything religious. I want to be cremated. There has to be lots of food. I don\u2019t want people to have to wear really nice clothes; they should just come as they are. And I don\u2019t want long speeches!
